The Best 9 Hostels in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"I love this converted 1920s laboratory in North Amsterdam for its stylish, clean, and super social vibe — it has a fantastic library, dedicated workspaces and an atrium, plus a café and on-site bar. The beds are new with soft pillows, and each bunk has an individual light and USB socket; they offer an all-you-can-eat breakfast for €9.90, organize lots of activities and live events, and even let musicians perform in the ZincBAR for a free one-night stay. It's a great pick for travelers who want to get off the beaten track, and HostelPass members get 10% off." - Matthew Kepnes

Just a boat ride from the City, this place is amazing. The check-in was great . I was greeted with warmth. The staff are amazing. As a seasoned traveler this makes all the difference. Everywhere was very clean and easy to navigate for such a large place. Will definately be comming back and I will reccomend to eveyone

Overall, a decent hostel with enough problems to make me want to stay elsewhere. I stayed in a 4 bed dorm and the room itself was good. A little small, but manageable. Beds were comfortable and lockers were a good size. The ensuite bathroom was solid. However, the shower heads were pretty bad. Very little pressure and hardly any concentration made it difficult to shower. This was the case in the ensuite one and shared one that I tried. The common area was very fun. Lots of seating and games. Very chill vibe with something going on every night. Staff were friendly for the most part. The real problem I had with this hostel was that it felt like they were trying to nickel and dime you. Storing luggage before check-in or after checkout costs you €5 minimum (4 hours, 1 locker) (what kind of hostel charges for luggage storage?). Laundry was €5 per machine, meaning €10 for one whole load, and the washing machines weren't very big. Stuff like this is just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I don't think I'll be back mainly for this reason.

This hostel is pretty great. Cheap, convenient to get to, and has nice views. And a GREAT BREAKFAST that makes you forget everything else. Although I gave 5 stars, there are few noteworthy negatives. 1. Check in process is an automated, self check in. But I only found a working screen on my fourth try. Which was pretty frustrating after dragging the suitcases and getting to the hostel looking for some peace. 2. Stayed in a 4 bed female dorm and there were no curtains. Room is pretty small. So if one person puts on their light, it disturbs everyone else. 3. No free towels. 4. I stayed in early November so the room had a comfortable temperature. But I could see how it could get pretty hot in summer months without AC. That’s all I could gather. Would I stay again? That would be a yes.

Good and friendly service - but rooms are very small and a bit dirty or damaged. Windows can’t be opened and the air conditioning does not work properly so the air quality in the room is very low 😖 Shower has a high chance of flooding the whole room, but if you’re careful and don’t shower very long it should work just fine :) Breakfast is very bad - does not taste good at all. Low quality but for a high price of 8,50€ per breakfast which is insane!! Rather buy something from the bakery in the store nearby, way cheaper :) But the location is good - about 10 minutes away from central station…

My friend and I stayed for 4 nights in the female only dorm room. The hostel overall is great! The staff is super friendly and helpful, the other guests are all very nice as well. They have a lounge, bar, and about two levels of seating if you want to hang out. Lots of things like air hockey, pool, card games. Now for the not so good… it’s a bit stinky and a bit hot in the rooms. It might just be par for the course when staying long in a hostel, but the room was stinky! It smelt like dirty feet/shoes the entire time… and then on top of it, it’s super warm. They have mini fans you can plug into the outlet at your bed but just WARNING! Overall, would book again because the other amenities out weighed the stink but… maybe bring an air freshener or something.

The rooms were pretty and clean, the lounge was lovely, and the breakfast food was delicious. Showers were good too, but it drains a little weird. Also, very convenient location. Not far from the heart of the city for its price. Quiet at night, too, though we were on the 3rd floor.|I was in a room with 7 people I was traveling with (and we had 4 other people in other rooms). We all went to sleep on our first night there, and when we woke up, 3 people were missing money and/or debit cards. We immediately contacted the staff, and they were being incredibly evasive and odd about the whole ordeal. We couldn't see the security footage and they couldn't tell us if someone had entered our room while we slept or not. We had to file a police report by ourselves. A simple 'yes or no' would have been a good start, but they kept claiming they had to follow 'protocol'. I understand they are not responsible for lost goods, but it would have been better if they were cooperative.

The rooms and the amenities are great. A bit confusing to get to the rooms because of the doors and distribution of the floors but nothing tragic. But I had a bad experience happen: When showering at one of the shared female bathrooms, I heard the cleaning guy try to get into my shower stall and that rattled me very much. I saw the lock open from the inside and I closed it immediately. I even think I heard the guy laugh. Afterwards, (it was around 7 am) I went to the reception area to issue a formal complaint but did not receive any kind of support from the person in charge. I felt like he did not believe me or he thought it was not such a big deal. But I was shaking and very scared of what I thought could’ve happened. I left for the day and when I got back, the person in charge (I believe she was called Letitia) was very attentive. Although she did not know what had happened (the morning shift did not left any message or indication of the incident) she heard me, helped me feel safer for the last night I was there and investigated the matter more in depth. I do believe it was a missundertanding but I also believe it could have been delt accordingly since the morning. The staff should be better prepared to act correctly when things like this happen and help their guests feel safer when faced with issues of this matter. A lot of training needs to be put in place both for the reception staff and to the cleaning staff to avoid further incidents

Super easy to get to from Amsterdam Centraal. We booked a double room with en-suite. Rooms are small but most are in Amsterdam. The bed was too hard for me, but perfectly fine for my partner. |The hostel has a bar with a great events offering (cinema, live music, karaoke, etc.).|There’s an Albert Heijn just around the corner for a cheap (€1) morning coffee and pastry.

Yelp
Staff is really friendly and accommodations are nice and everything feels very safe. Rooms are a bit small and shared bathrooms could probably be kept a bit cleaner, but overall, this is a great place to stay!

Yelp
Stayed in this hostel for a few nights during our visit to Amsterdam. Wonderful location, great vibes and clean rooms! Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Great place! I stayed in a mixed room that started empty but was full the next day. Staff is extremely friendly and there 24/7. The hostel is nearby to the train station and all you have to do is take a trolley 2-3 minute trolly across. Besides that the rooms were clean and well kept. The bathrooms were good but definitely needed to be checked and cleaned more often. The beds were super comfy. And there was so many activities in the hostel, great place. Oh, you also need this app called GOKI to log in but it was all good.

Yelp
In terms of hostels, this is the nicest one I've stayed in. However, I did pay extra for a private room so that might've impacted the experience. The room itself was clean and small with plenty of plugs and even USB ports. Nice! The double bed was comfortable and the bathroom clean. I did find the toilet paper holder to be pretty annoying -- the paper didn't like to roll well on the roll. Oh well. One thing to note: Bring earplugs. Noise isn't so much in the hostel but outside. If I didn't have earplugs it's unlikely I would've slept. Free walking tours depart from reception daily at 10:30, which is excellent especially if you'd like to meet other travelers.

Yelp
This modern hostel was by far the most sleek that I've stayed in! It was a 3-5 minute walk from the free, 24-hour ferry that takes you over to Centraal Station and into the heart of the city. Pros: -Exceptionally clean interior and exterior! -Great information at the front desk for various exciting activities -Wifi connection is AMAZING! It worked better than the wifi at my own house lol -They have USB ports in the overhead of your bed, which was awesome because I didn't have the correct charger for the Amsterdam ports and I would have had a dead phone the entire time! -Gorgeous bar area and lounge area -Great books in the book exchange -Prime location to get around without paying the money of being right on top of everything -Very safe and secure (you need key card access to get into each respective wing. Cons: -The shared 4-person room felt like I was on a cruise ship. It was VERY narrow: if I stretched my legs out towards the bed across from me, I would have invaded her personal space. -The shower/plumbing doesn't drain very well--there was no barrier in our room's bathroom to ensure that the floor didn't become a mini-lagoon. -Staff wasn't as friendly as staff that I've encountered at other hostels. They weren't UNfriendly, just not warm and welcoming as I would have liked.

Yelp
I've just spent a few days here with the Mr on our first trip to Amsterdam. When we were looking for accommodation, EVERYWHERE in Central Amsterdam was super expensive - so much so that we were thinking of ditching our super cheap flights and going elsewhere. Until we were chatting in the pub one night, and our local friendly drag queen suggested going to the Noord area, across the canal behind Centraal Station. A quick Google later, and we were booked. There's a 24hr, free water-bus service to take you back and forth - the journey takes a couple of mins at most. ClinkNoord is basically a huge hostel, comprising of dorms and private rooms. We opted for a private room, with en suite bathroom. It was small but ideal for us. Cleaners stopped in daily to keep on top of things. There's very much a focus on the social aspect of travelling here. They hold twice weekly solo travellers get togethers, ping pong tournaments, communal kitchen, and bar. ClinkNoord also have their own food menu - we tried out burgers and pizzas - all were great, and pretty inexpensive. The reception staff were awesome - we forgot a few things we needed printed out for our trip, but it was no bother for them to do this for us. There's also a free, communal left luggage room, if (like us) you've quite a wait between checking out and your onward journey. We were also able to grab a shower before picking up our cases (£3 for the towel was money well spent!). All in all, we had a good stay here. Basic accommodation, but a great atmosphere.

Yelp
Stayed @ Clink for 2 nights. Wonderful spot, simply wonderful. I feel like I'm back in my college dorm. Music is bumpin, staff is so friendly, the place is so modern and new and nice. So close to the ferry too- this is a great place to book .. but wasn't a fan of the breakfast, that's the only thing I didn't like!

Yelp
ClinkNOORD Amsterdam was really my first time trying out a hostel. I've been told stories about some more spartanistic hostels and have heard horror stories, but ClinkNOORD was actually super accommodating and very modern. The entry way is hard to find, but it's hiding in the corner looking at a stream. You walk in and have a few sets of staircases, but just go to the right. The front desk was really interesting. All the employees have badges detailing what language they spoke. Check in wasn't later, so we stored our bags in their basement area which was super helpful and a must when you're carrying a crap ton of luggage. We got our keys and headed to our room. The rooms weren't anything out of this world, but very clean and -I'm assuming-standard. There are lockers in the room, which is an absolute must have when you stay in hostels (just bring your own lock). The bunk beds were fine, if not a little squeaky, but my boyfriend and I shared on. The bathrooms were single stall down the hall and the showers were spread out. I never personally had problems finding open bathrooms or showers. There was a bar downstairs with a mini restaurant. We were there on St Patrick's Day, which seemed overly Americanized. Oh well because we had some free beer tickets! We also tried some absinthe for the first time and... WOW! Breakfast was absolutely amazing. They do have a guest kitchen, but why cook breakfast when it's $8/night when you book early? The breakfast was a smorgasbord of local meats, spreads, fruits, veggies, breads (rye, wheat, sweet bread, and etc.), and so much more. The coffee machine has a thousand settings, including chocolate lattes. I highly recommend the chocolate latte with their farmer's bread and chocolate hazelnut spread. All in all I was very pleased with my first hostel experience. We stayed in Air BnBs the rest of the vacation, but I appreciated staying in the hostel. Clink was so close to everything and the central train station hub was a short fairy ride. Definitely invest in the Amsterdam rail pass and you have a quick way to get around town.

Yelp
Nice hotel/hostel to stay at while in Amsterdam. As you can read from other reviews, the location is great as it's just a 5 minute walk to the ferry that gets you over to central station in two minutes - it runs all day and night long so it makes getting around very easy. The breakfast was filling and inexpensive with many options, the cafe was nice to have for a pick me up during the day as well. The staff were pleasant and helpful, allowing us to check in an hour early and answered any questions we had about the place and Amsterdam itself. My only qualm would be the room. If you can, try to get one ground floor or above. I was placed in one of the ones in the basement and there was poor air circulation, minimal light, and an overall depressing feel to an otherwise great place.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the best hostels I've stayed at during my travels. I tend to lean towards hotels or aitbnb, but a friend recommended this place and I'm glad I checked it out. I got my own room and at night it was super quite. They also served breakfast that you have to pay for but it was worth it.

Yelp
Very clean and friendly hostel! The ferry ride in is free and quick, so don't let that deter you from getting a good nights rest here!

Yelp
The front desk people absolutely saved my life when I accidentally locked the key to my padlock inside my locker. This hostel is lively and full of friendly people, with tons of hang out space, a bar, games, and events to go to. I can't wait to go back someday, and I will always look back on my time in Amsterdam fondly, in part because of this wonderful hostel.

Yelp
This place is pretty nice for a hostel, my only problem was that one of my roommates found men underwear in her bed while we were there which means no one really cleaned that room so it just seemed kind of nasty. And there was no soap in the bathroom but there was in everyone else bathrooms. Besides that I enjoyed my stay, everyone was really nice there.

Yelp
A big, efficient hostel with comfortable and clean rooms as well as a bar, a kitchen, breakfast buffet (they have a really hard time keeping it stocked with all of the guests eating there), and extremely easy (free) ferry access from central station. Would definitely stay here again. Reliable wifi is worth noting as well.

Yelp
I stayed at Clink Hostel in room 130 for two nights this past week. The room is small, but comfortable. The ensuite bathroom is a major plus - and the WIFI connection is strong. The staff was friendly - and the lobby areas nice. They offer events and food & beverage within the hostel. You take a ferry to get there from the main train station - and that is a fun little perk. I'd stay here again.

Yelp
This is the best hostel experience I have had traveling overseas, or in the USA for that matter. It is centrally located and only a ferry ride to the center of Amsterdam. I have stayed there 3 times in a private room. The service is extremely professional, friendly, and very clean and organized. The price range is exceptional for the quality. In fact, I would say this is one of the best hostel-hotels in the world.

Yelp
Great hostel! We stayed for 3 nights in Clinknoord with a group of 8 and it was a pleasurable experience - great location (close to town with just a few min ferry ride), clean rooms and public facilities and nice staff. Definitely recommend this for all travellers who want to save money from the hotel/hostel costs but still want a good sleep in a clean and nice space.
