Very quiet on a Saturday and there was only 1 other table apart from us.
Got 2 set lunches ($28++ each) - one with Laphet Thoke (fermented tea leaf salad), Mohinga (some noodle dish); the other was Shan TofuKyaw and Ngar Kin (grilled red snapper dish w rice). We also got one other ala carte eggplant dish in masala curry to share.
This was the second time I had Burmese food, and the fermented tea leaf salad tasted different from the first place I had. While I liked the varying textures (esp the crunch from the peanuts and peas?), it leaned towards the sour side. The 2 tiny chili padis provided a good spicy kick too. Overall, it was just alright for me. The Shan tofu felt better, it had a slight sweetness to it and paired well with the accompanying sauce. Be sure to eat it fast as it loses it's crispiness quite fast, as with many fried foods.
The mains - both mains felt very underwhelming, nothing quite outstanding. Especially the fish with rice dish, just tasted like what you would expect... It was my first time trying Mohinga too, and I was slightly disappointed as the vibrancy of the dish left me thinking it could be more. But what I tasted was quite a normal, bland noodle dish without much dimension to it. Felt almost like a watered down laksa-ish kinda vibes? Without the coconut milk taste.
The best dish we had was the masala eggplant, which stole the show (and our hearts). While it was on the oilier side, it provided a good balance of tastiness and the masala curry left us wanting more. Both my friend and I agreed this was the best fish. In fact, it paired better with the rice as compared to the fish (which was kinda bland for us as well).
Both sets came with the same dessert, which was the perfect sweet ending to the meal. It was also our favourite dish as the milk tea ice cream, just slightly sweet, provided a nice contrast to the sweet banana puree-ish mush. I didn't know milk tea and banana would go so well together. Honestly the highlight of the meal. Chef's kiss!
Overall, although the food left much to be desired, there were still some outstanding dishes and we enjoyed our meal nevertheless. Service was good too and the ambience (maybe because it was just us) was pleasant. Would I come back? Perhaps not. However, I could foresee this being a place suitable for celebrating special occasions.
