Stopped in to Cluny on a recent trip to Toronto & it was the perfect spot for brunch on a warm & sunny Saturday afternoon... We decided to sit indoors since the breeze was picking up. We say down & ordered some cocktails. I did the LE DERNIER MOT (charred pineapple infused citadelle gin, amaro lucano, green chartreuse, mezcal mist, lime), my boyfriend went with a Spicy Cesar & his S-I-L had the OLD FASHIONED FUMÉ (woodford reserve bourbon, maple syrup, angostura). While we looked through the menu, my boyfriend decided to start with the CLUNY CAESAR (crisp pancetta, parmesan tuile, white anchovy and a soft poached egg) & his brother went with THE CLUNY FRENCH ONION SOUP (glazed onions, rich beef broth, thyme). For mains, my boyfriend's sister-in-law chose the SMOKED SALMON TOWER (multigrain bread, smoked salmon, whipped cream cheese topped with salmon roe, chives, cornichon, capers) not realizing it was meant to be shared. Like literally, it could have fed 4. I did the SAUTÉED MUSHROOM TARTINE (roasted sunchokes, compressed apple, sherry caramel and hazelnuts) & it was just as divine as the first time I had it a few years ago. Delicious! My guy & his brother both went with THE FRENCHY BURGER (9oz. beef burger, pain au lait bun, crispy fried red onion, thick cut double smoked bacon, grainy mustard aioli, cornichon, pickled red pearl onion, boston bibb, gruyère, fried duck egg and frites). We had such a lovely time but removing one star because although the ambiance & food were great, Wendy was so embarrassed by the size of the SALMON TOWER! She felt compelled to finish it, even going as far as making mini sandwiches to feed the rest of the table to not leave so much food behind. I really think it's the responsibility of the waiter to mention important details like extreme sizes in dishes & not leave the diners to discover on their own. At least we could laugh about it later!
