Nigiri here was very good. Fresh and good quality. Was a little disappointed with the rolls that I tried. Didn't taste great and would fall apart easily. Would not order rolls here again.

Delicious authentic sushi right by the lake. For our visit, we had the Warrior Roll, the Happy Roll, a bowl of miso soup 🍲 and the edamame. It was all great, the fish was fresh, and it wasn’t too expensive for sushi! Reminded me a bit of my days teaching English in Japan 🇯🇵

One of the tastiest sushi restaurants in Oakland. The Mango Paradise and the Coach Sushi rolls are absolutely delicious. They also make their own ice cream, and we tried the Black Sesame one and it was sublime. Perfect stop before/after a movie night at the Grand Lake Theater!

Such great ambiance and value. They offer an unlimited box of sake for five bucks extra if you buy a meal of a certain amount. The sushi is fresh, the space is intimate and the service is always great. I love meeting up with friends here, since it’s so centrally located and right by the lake. I would eat here every day if I could afford to.

As much as you would like saki (and they never let your cup run dry). Sushi is okay it's not the best sushi in Oakland, but it is affordable. We go there with friends for the saki and good times, not because we need to settle a craving for sushi. Staff was nice, prices are great. I'd recommend for a fun night out.

Wanted to try someplace new and heard about the unlimited sake box here. Ended up not getting it because they don't offer hot sake in conjunction with said deal. Sashimi is better in many other places. This was also the worst soft shell crab that I've ever had. This is also the only place I've been to so far which had the Katsu Don and Tofu Misoyaki. The Katsu Don was mediocre. The only thing that stood out this meal was the Tofu Misoyaki.

This place has a very cute and a little bit traditional Japanese decor! Very busy street and easy to find!it's mostly clean, for sure... which for some parts of lake Merritt is rare. The service is great! Although I came on a cloudy night windy day the staff were very attentive and happy go lucky! Love that!!! All the food was fresh, fresh, fresh, which makes it all the more tasty! The hot green tea hit the spot on this chill day. If you want quality Japanese food and a Sapporo, this is your spot!!! The price is reasonable for lake Merritt prices! A lot of street parking! Clean restroom.

Hate to say it but coach is slipping a lot. Like a lot of sushi places they raised their prices and cut back on quality. My go-to order is a chirashi but the last time the sashimi was paper thin. I tried the expensive omikase sashimi ($56) but the selections of fish were odd, with the exception of the toro which was great. On a busy night service is not good because they are trying to make do with one server.

Loved coming here for lunch on Sunday. We walked from our house , takes about 15min. A good walk to get your appetite going:) we came super late at around closing time but we were greeted from sweet and enthusiastic staff. We loved sharing: - miso soup - cherry blossom roll - Hawaii roll - dragon roll - crunchy tuna roll Food was fresh and delicious. We loved all our rolls. Our 5 year old surprised us and ate 5 rolls. We r definitely coming back here. I love that is small and welcoming with friendly staff and affordable prices! Gotta love neighborhood gems

Hot new Japanese spot in Lake Merritt for your next date! Fish and meat are so fresh. The creative menu has a great selection and everything I tasted was divine. I ordered: - grilled short rib beef (must order!) - hamachi carpaccio (delicious to share 2-4 ppl) - salmon lover sushi roll - baked lobster sushi roll - basil chicken karaage (good snack, feeds 2-4) - sashimi salad (i'd recommend as a lunch item for 1 person or to share between 2) - grilled squid (feeds 2-4) They even serve Uji Time Dessert ice cream and have special pineapple and white peach sake ice cream serve only at this restaurant! I will definitely be coming back here. Owner is sweet and workers are also very helpful.

I love this place the food is excellent. The service from our server Happy was even better. She is full of positive energy and is always attentive to guests' needs. Will always return and order the truffle roll with no hesitation.

The food is amazing. The sashimi is silky, melts in the mouth with the perfect level of firmness. I can't recommend their homemade ice cream enough, it's super creamy with no iciness. Not overly sweet and with chunks of fruit (we got the mango). The prices are really reasonable especially for Oakland, but really for sushi in general. The service is impeccable, and the woman who has served us the last two times we've been here has treated us like family. Positioned right next to lake Merit, it is now our go to place for a filling and refreshing meal after a nice run. Every aspect of this restaurant is a 5/5 star.

This lovely spot by the lake has a new owner and they deserve kudos. They have continued your favorites from the past and also given it a fresh start with a great new selection of signature sushi from the chef at the sushi bar. The fish is high quality, fresh, best you can get! The tempura is delicate and so light! Lovely Plum wine! The staff is enthusiastic and attentive. They are really glad you're there and make you feel at home. They will tailor many dishes to suit you. Go ahead ask for extra sauce or for your preferred veggie in your tempura order. Right across from Lake Merritt, there is a glimpse of the water. The place is a perfect size, cozy and welcoming.

I've been meaning to try coach sushi forever and I finally did. First off try to make a reservation cause it's a small place and very popular. But for good reason! The sushi is delicious and freshly made in front of you, and the hot sake is on point. They also have bottomless sake as an option but that seems a bit dangerous lol. I had the spicy tuna, sweet potato and Philly rolls. They all hit the spot and filled me up!

I was just at Coach Sushi before Christmas and had THE BEST Nigiri, tempura and chicken teriyaki!!! This is my Go To Sushi restaurant in Oakland, now. It's cozy and I love sitting and looking out at Lake Merritt. I believe this changed hands in the summer, and I think it was good before, but now it's GREAT!

I came in after work to get a quick bite and ordered a California Role to go. Staffs at the restaurant very friendly and professional when I was sitting down to wait for my order, they offer water to me without asking for it. I highly recommended to tried out their delicious sushi's selections.

Came here for lunch when alot of other stuff was closed as a backup for my folks being in town. Was pleasantly surprised! Generous bento boxes and the 12pc sashimi came with fresh thick cuts of fish. Will be back.

We generally go to Coach Sushi and this last time were really disappointed. I think that they may be under new management as the entire menu had changed. I used to order the Bento Box which had some amazing options and now it is so limited that it is not worth ordering. My partner ordered Pork Katsu which was not the same flavor as in the past. It seems like they raised prices and created a limited menu. Sadly, we will not be returning as we used go often.

New owners same delicious food! The waitress was so sweet, since I moved near Piedmont Ave years ago I stopped coming but now I'm back. I ordered dinner bento and sashimi was fresh and beef teriyaki delicious.

Great and fresh sushi we had on the Sunday night! I love the sashimi and miso soup so much!! We ordered bento with beef teriyaki and California roll, it so fresh and come with large portion. The owner get all flavour of ice-cream for us to choose for dessert, I strongly recommend their Uji Time ice-cream matcha flavour, not very sweet and strong matcha flavour following. The service is fast and friendly, the place and restroom are absolutely clean.

This place was SO GOOD! The staff was so fun on a Friday night! We met the whole crew, and they passed out free sake! We had such a good time! The food was delicious! We will for sure be coming back! Also love how it is right across from Lake Merritt which is so beautiful and lit up at night!

The new owners have really turned this place around. Fish is super fresh and tasty - prices are incredibly reasonable and now they are open 7 days a week and they are open later than before too! Service was beyond friendly! Ambiance was lively and cozy. Super excited to have a new local sushi spot to pop into anytime.

Best Japanese place in Oakland. People here are the best. Tried their rolls are sk good. All the food we ate was so good. The place feels like home. Will definitely go back.

Sadly the new ownership has ruined this place for me. I was going to order tonight and really just made because the one thing that I had been craving all day long and dreaming about having for dinner tonight was there tofu steak which comes with the most delicious sauce and vegetables and is always very yummy and very satisfying for a good vegan option. But unfortunately they got rid of it and they only have the teriyaki tofu now which is not anywhere near the same. I really hope they reconsider and put that back on the menu and make it the way the old staff did. As a vegan, I appreciate restaurants that make an effort to have things like a tofu steak, that isn't made of some high processed crap, so I'm really really sad that my favorite item is gone. I can't speak for the rest of the food right now but I really wish the new owners would have at least kept that item from the old menu.

We got dinner yesterday, once we got home, my girlfriend and myself got food poisoning and we were throwing up during night, we were the only customers there and they took 35 minutes to bring us our food. Also they messed up our order and brought us wrong item. Would not recommend to come here!!

Finally a Sushi Place across from the Lake that serves sushi the right way. Of course it's my opinion. HIGH QUALITY is what you get here though. Fresh! Fresh! Fresh! New owners! New choices! Everything from the greeting to the food to the music is a 10.

I ordered pick up and had to wait 20 minutes while the staff ignored me with my food sitting out in the open. If you order pickup you might have to bother the staff multiple times before they forget about your order too.

Cute spot but the sushi is subpar when compared to other sushi spots in the area. This is a really popular spot located walking distance from the Lake off of Grand. Walking in, you'll get this really homey feel. It's small but lively and the environment seems to be very relaxed. Service was actually great and the sushi bar is an excellent alternative if you don't want to wait for a table (the inside is currently closed due to COVID-19). This place is also known for its' bottomless sake which is one of the main reasons for its' popularity. I've never really been that crazy about sake, so I didn't take advantage. I stopped by for dinner one evening and was underwhelmed by the sushi. They provide a nice complimentary appetizer before your meal. Their sushi menu is pretty extensive and offers a nice variety of rolls. They are a bit on the spendy side but pretty much on par with the other sushi places nearby. The difference is that the quality isn't as good here. I ordered a New York Roll and a Lion King Roll. Usually when I order more then one roll, I'm never able to finish them both. Welp, I finished both of them here. Yep. Their rolls are small and not really filling. I was shocked. Probably could have eaten one more roll, but who wants to spend $40 for 3 small rolls?! The quality is questionable too. They didn't taste fresh. Seemed like the ingredients were a few days old at least. Both rolls tasted average, but the New York Roll tasted the best out of the two. The sauce on the Lion King Roll had a weird aftertaste. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I've never experienced that sort of flavor on a Lion King Roll and I order this all the time at sushi restaurants. Presentation-wise, everything looked beautiful. It just sucks that the quality didn't match. I really enjoyed the service and the atmosphere here though. I'd be down to give them another try in the future, but I'd try different rolls next time around.

I've been coming to this spot for several years even after moving out of the neighborhood. Sometimes we eat in but mostly take out now. We keep coming back for the sushi. I'm not a sushi connoisseur by any means but I've tried other places and they don't compare. I've liked a lot of items but the rainbow roll is simply AMAZING! The fish on top is fresh and the inner filling is sooo good. On top of the food, the inside is nothing fancy but makes you feel like it's a family restaurant which feels good. The head lady is very welcoming and and makes jokes about my rainbow roll obsession. There's really nothing to complain about, I'll be coming back again and again.

Coach would be proud. The nigiri fish was fresh, and delicious; the bento was excellent, teriyaki chicken had crispy skin, and the tempura was crisp with clearly fresh vegies. I recommend sitting at the bar end to watch the sushi chef prepare even the most delicate sushi with grace and art.

Generous slices of sashimi and flavorful Ramen were surprisingly good. The waiter was friendly and nice view of Lake Merrit. I will go again.

Bottomless sake?? OKAY!! This is the only place I know of that does free sake refills. Masu sake - 5.50$ with a 15$ minimum food order per person. Excellent bang for your buck. Four of us thoroughly enjoyed our evening. I had gone with low expectations as the food is not pricy at all. But I was very happy with the outcome. Almost everything we got was appreciated by everyone. Appetizers - agedashi tofu (fried soft tofu), combination tempura (4/5) Sashimi/ nigiri- sashimi combination (20$)-great selection of fresh, tasty fish. Uni nigiri - 2 pieces for 13.5$ - soft and luscious (5/5) Maki / rolls - They have a good selection of rolls. Philadelphia roll (3/5), California roll (3.5/5), rainbow roll (4/5), raiders roll (4.5/5), Romeo roll (4/5). Dessert - banana tempura with chocolate sauce. That was pretty weak (2.5/5) It's definitely a great spot for a group hang out. Eat, drink, and be merry!

This review is for the bottomless sake experience with the groups of friends that I bring for fun nights of debauchery. Coach Sushi is a small restaurant along Grand Ave. across from Lake Merritt that has decent sushi but many usually go for the bottomless sakes. I was lucky enough to be able to make a reservation fir a large group of friends on a Friday night. We arrived a little late for our reservation but they still accommodated our soon to be crazy group. Of course, we all wanted the bottomless sake. I think the price was just $3.50 extra if we spent at least $10 on food so we were good to go. I usually get the happy salmon combo, which came with all salmon sashimi, nigiri, maki, and hand roll. It was yummy! Then, the bottomless sake came out and I gotta give a shout-out the sake queen server, Peng, who kept our sake boxes flowing all night. She is always so accommodating and didn't skip a beat in serving us. She also explained that in order to do it correctly the first time, you need a little salt on the edge of your sake box and you have to take the first drink with no hands. She also proceeded to take pictures of our group- lol. Needless to say, our group got a good buzz and enjoyed the night. We then Ubered to karaoke to sing our hearts out. Thanks Coach Sushi for continuing to be the bottomless sake icon of Oakland!

This place is pretty great. Fun vibes, all you can drink sake, a huge menu and quick, friendly service. They are *not* stingy with refilling your box of sake so be careful! I love their tofu dishes in particular. The maki are great too. Happy to go back and support this business.

Loved this place. Staying at a friend's house here in Oakland, craving some good food. Found this place, placed an order online. Drove downtown to get it, which always seems to be a mission. We found parking, the water was great to look at as we walked over. Our order was just about ready. We paid and was given our box of food. The food was delicious. We just ordered bentos and it was a lot. Everything was tasty. We couldn't stop eating, despite being full. I am definitely coming back here again. Staff was very polite.

Went in when indoor dining reinstated not long. Seating were limited due to the hour visited. I was asked if seat by the bar was accepted as I stated one person. I was quickly served and asked politely. Gentleman waiter was calm and attentive which I appreciated much. I tried to put my mind focus on enjoying the grateful meal I got to have and ease my stress during the day. That's why I decide to treat myself eventhough was a splurge on the cost of meal. Overall experience was decent considering any type of business been struggling this past year. If I was expecting anything above and beyond would be unrealistic at the moment.

I have been eating at Coach Sushi for over 15 years. I have a lot of emotion wrapped up in the place. I have spent many a birthday, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and Superbowl Sunday sipping boxes of saki, chatting with Coach, and the staff. I was sad when Coach retired. Long gone are the days when he chased me down the street with a bottle of saki to ensure my endless box of saki was always overfilled in a sign of abundance. Over the years the place had become a bit run down. The quality of fish wasn't the same but I still had my love of the place, so when I walked in last night after being out of town for several months I knew something had changed. The place had a whole new look which was welcoming, but I knew from the faces of the staff and the sushi chef that one of my favorite places had undergone new ownership. My heart sank a little. We sat down at the Sushi Bar and ordered. Gone on the new menu were some of our favorites, but with an open mind we ordered a few nigiri, some dumplings, and a few rolls. The fish slices were nice and fresh. They were bigger than the last sushi chef would cut. The rolls were slightly more interesting. The gyoza, although no longer pan fried, were still hand made and delish. Happy, the new owner was receptive to suggestions like changing the table salt for the saki to a courser grind kosher salt or flake salt. No, this was not MY Coach Sushi, but I think it will be our new old place as we explore the new menu in months to come. Sure sometime a new owner isn't as good as the old owner, but this new owner sure wants to make the community loved restaurant her own and we will keep coming for another 15 years. Located right across from Lake Merrit, you're promised good sushi with a good view. I came here for a friend's birthday dinner, and I can't think of a better place to go with a large group of friends. Because aside from the good sushi and good view, bottomless sake. BOTTOMLESS sake. I didn't partake, but from observing, you're given a small bamboo box filled to the brim with sake and the option to put sea salt with every sip. Your box never goes empty. Before you can even finish, the lady with the big bottle of sake makes her rounds and you're instantly replenished. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, beautiful presentation and surprisingly filling for what it was. This was $20. Side note, don't write on the sake boxes unless you want to pay $6 for it! They have some stacked on shelves around the restaurant so it looks like you can do it, but they have no more space.

Order sashimi and chirashi to go Quality below normal, lack of decoration , and small portion. Coach sushi, You need to work out, nowadays people know what is good sushi. Come on!

I love the unli musa sake deal! Babe took me here for Vday and we enjoyed our meal! Food was prettty good and the staff is super accommodating. Small little spot in Oakland, but very enjoyable!

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Good place to start off before bar hopping. They have great food, huge portions and all you can drink sake! The sake is yummy and they serve it in a cute bamboo box. The servers come by to fill up once they see you're getting low (which could also be your demise of the night but worth it ). Can't wait for covid to end to do this AGAIN and AGAIN

Love it!! Service was friendly and attentive. One thing I loved was there signs all around that said if you need a ride let us know. Don't drink and drive. For me that spoke volumes on how they love their community and customers. My Lion King was Amazing, it was so fresh. Bluefin is still my #1. The ambiance was pleasant and the place was very clean. The staff made it feel like I belonged.

They have great vegetarian options and have great service. Their misoyaki tofu has a wonderful grilled flavor with a delicious sauce.

What to do on a night out with friends in Oakland? Sushi and bottomless sake, 'nuff said! I came here for a friend's birthday dinner and I would EASILY come back again. We reserved a table for around 12 or so of us. The policy was to spend at least $20 worth of food to get the bottomless sake for $3.50 (? I may be wrong with the pricing). Simply put, spend at least $20-25 and you get just enough sushi with bottomless sake for 2 hours! They say they never let your sake box run empty, and I loved how our waitress required us to drink the first sip of sake the traditional way -- sea salt on the rim of the box and to take a sip as a bow of respect. The rest was free to enjoy. Our sushi came out pretty slow and sporadically around the table, but we managed and it was easy to spend at least $20 worth of food to get the sake. I ordered a combination of different nigiri. Sushi itself was okay -- I have definitely had better, but it was still delicious and kept me satisfied through the night. Coach Sushi is located right by Lake Merritt in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Oakland. It's a nice spot by the lake and close enough to walk to other locations. Nice, convenient, fits the bill. I had no complaints and would easily come again for a night out with friends!

Unlimited sake is dangerous. Repeat after me: unlimited sake is dangerous. They literally have signs at every table noting the number of a taxi company.... the sushi is perfect for the price. My usual is the 9 piece nigiri special that comes with a dynamite roll (spicy tuna), but recently I also tried the salmon skin hand roll which is not on the menu. It was to die for!! Crispy not chewy and a mouth full of umami. My friends got the salmon bento box and colorful party roll. There were no complaints except someone in the restaurant shushed us... again unlimited sake is dangerous. Maybe we were a bit loud but we were just having a great time.

Service here is awesome! Wanted to come here because I heard about their all you can drink sake box (masu sake). So we called to see if they took reservations same day and they do! Called in for 4 people . When we arrived, we actually needed 5 seats. Pulled up a chair and done. It was a pretty small restaurant so I thought it was gonna be super busy since it was Saturday night after all. Anyways thanks !! 5/5 stars for your service ! D R I N K S Masu Sake (5/5 Stars) - Just pay for the box ($6) and spend at least $15 on food and your sake box will always be filled. The waitress walked around every few minutes to refill your sake and she's so nice. She chit chatted with us a bit. Sweet lady. F O O D Food was pretty good but some items were meh. Lion King (2/5 stars) - I was a bit disappointed on the lion king . It didn't have that nice baked / seared taste. It's just like a California with sauce on top With salmon and fish eggs. I wished the eggs and mayo were burnt to a crisp. Uni Nigiri (5/5 Stars) - I had to ask how much the uni was since it wasn't listed in their menu. $13 !!! Only ! I'm like whuuuuttt that's so cheap ! They're usually like 18-20 bucks . Give me two orders please ! Delish ! So fluffy and yummy ! Deep Fried Baby Octopus (5/5 Stars) - it was on their specials menu. It was actually really good ! Wasn't super battered or too lightly battered. Wished it came with some sort of sauce . So I just asked for ponzu sauce which went well together. Mmm. Pork Gyoza (4/5 Stars) - you have a choice of deep fried or pan fried. I didn't know that til I wanted seconds of this to snack on while we drank. I had the pan fried first and when I ordered my second with a different waiter, he asked deep fried or pan fried . I'm like what?? We can have either or?? Hey, I'll try the pan fried. Both were good. Although the deep fried was smaller and a tad bit drier but not too bad. Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab (2/5 Stars) - This item here is usually my go to must have whenever I go eat at a Japanese restaurant. But when they brought it out ... I was like what in the effing hell. The crab was not battered at all. It was just thrown into the fryer cooked as in. The crab was very crumbly and fragile. And it just was meh. Wasn't terrible.... just meh. Chicken Karaage (3/5 Stars) - Meh. Soft but a tad bit dry. Soooo ... meh. Overall, I'd still come back. Just gotta try different items . Their menu is very wordy. No pictures .

Coach Sushi is a must go spot in Oakland CA. They give you your own sushi cup that you can reuse every time you go. The food is made to order and very fresh.

My sister and I LOVE sushi, particularly raw salmon. We go nuts over sashimi and like to binge eat together since we have similar taste buds. This place is one of the spots my sister and I take our sisterly adventures to. Their prices make our salmon binge eating very doable. My sister and I are sometimes mistaken for twins, but we're nearly a decade apart in age. It's a fun time in our lives with our sisterly adventures since I'm the single 20s version of her and she's the 30s married version of me. While her husband went into the city for beer week, she and I decided to go have BOTTOMLESS SAKES AND HELLLA SALMON! (Her husband isn't really a salmon fan) Anyway, 20 minutes into our sake and salmon feast, my sister goes "oh man I think I'm drunk, I'm just such a lightweight now" I gave her a stink eye look and said "bruh come on don't act like a freshman girl in college who doesn't know how to hang..." Anyway her face starts turning pretty red (she gets Asian glow and I don't, thanks mom and dad!) Whatever, as I'm eating my salmon I'm cracking jokes with my sister and slightly judging her for getting so done so quickly before I could even get a buzz on. I took her home, but anyway, love this place. Good sushi, sashimi is a very good deal, and it's a place pretty dear to me since it has become one of the places my sister and I typically come together to and have good laughs :-)

It's been several years since I've come here. They no longer "give" you your own personalized wooden sake box (I have NO idea where mine went). Most likely, it's been thrown away long ago. There are some personalized boxes stacked up near the entrance, I looked through but didn't see mine. Apparently, you can buy one for $6 now. When I used to frequent this place, it used to be jam-packed with a long wait. We walked right in at 6:00 p.m. and the place was pretty empty. By 7:00 p.m., the place was full. The last time I came here, the "bottomless" sake was $3.50. Now it's $5.50 with a strict rule that you have to spend $15 on sushi. The instructions on the back of the menu are super confusing- I recommend not reading them. When we asked the waitress to explain the rules, she pointed to the menu and told us to read it. Here's the deal: If you spend $15 on sushi (apparently smaller items like miso soup, appetizers, etc. do not count towards the $15), you pay $5.50 for sake and get as many refills as you want. The waitress seemed very wary that we weren't going to order our $15 minimum. After it was clear that we were, she became a lot more attentive. Note: We all ended up spending $40/pp (including tax and tip). I had the hamachi sashimi, scallop nigiri, the Coach roll and a small bowl of mushroom soup. All the sushi tasted fresh. Good quality at good prices. The bottomless sake is a great deal and it's a fun place to come with a group of friends. Unfortunately, "Coach" was not here, he was on a cruise in Florida. He's a funny character and I was hoping to see him. Anyhow, I'm glad I came back, it's a fun place to go when you have a craving for reasonably priced sushi!
