On the Grid : Coal Miner's Daughter

"Two #ladybosses run this shop. One of which is the great granddaughter of Rose, a real coal miner's daughter. Great Grandma Rose also worked at a dress company back in the 30s. Today she'd likely be proud to know the legacy lives on, at a women's fashion boutique on Roncy. The shop has a love for local including makers and designers of mainly the jewelry, clothing, and handbag variety. A few Danish and Parisian labels were spotted as well, which is certainly always welcome." - Sarah Di Domenico

Awesome experience shopping! Janine and Ella were lovely to talk to and were willing to help research questions I had when they didn't know the exact answers. Overall a lovely spot! Worth your time and money

Favourite store for the past decade! I started shopping here because they’re the only store in the city that carries a designer that I loved while living in France and I’ve been introduced to several new favourite designers through CMD since then. It’s a gem 💕

Finding about this lovely store today was by far a highlight of my day. Love the style, design of the space and attention to customers. I did not purchase much but found an amazing pair of earrings I’ll be sure to wear! Michelle was super helpful and assisted me with picking out something suitable for my wardrobe style. I’ll be sure to come back next time I need that little something for my wardrobe.

I love Coal Miner's Daughter and the collection of Canadian-designed clothes they curate, but my experiences shopping here have been hit and miss, because they don't seem to get new inventory very often. For example I have an outdoorsy wedding coming up and wanted to find a suitable outfit- dressy and feminine, but also picnic-chic and in a natural material that would be comfortable in hot weather. Of course I thought of CMD and visited three of their locations (Queen west, Roncy and Dundas west). At all three I found that dresses, tops and skirts I had been excited to see online were either sold out, or only in very large or very small sizes. I would understand if this had been the end of the season, but this was mid-July. It seemed really early to be out of so much summer inventory. It's a lovely store to try your luck in if you happen to be walking past, but based on this experience I don't think I'll make a special visit there again, unless I know they are well-stocked at that moment like the very beginning of a season.

Cute and interesting store that highlights local Canadian brands for fashion and other neat little items to make your day a bit more prettier. With a focus on being feminine, it doesn't fall into the trap of the instagram trendy fashion where you wear it one day and toss the next. I do love how this supports Canadian brands... 200% love it. I spotted Sara Duke, Birds of North America, and even Sloane Tea! They also have non Canadian brands but they're keeping in the same aesthetics and quality. So I find the stitching and fabrics a good step up from anything you'd find in the normal malls. I would say the overall look curated here is casual and relaxed with a pretty spin. So think loose dresses in light prints, flowy blouses, A line tank tops that keeps you cool, and comfy linen pants. Personally my preference didn't quite fit this look but I did enjoy perusing the racks in hopes of finding something. This particular store is not large so I had a hard time finding anything in my size even if I did find clothes that did catch my eye. I do appreciate how everything was nicely organized so I could look around without feeling claustrophobic or lost in a maze of racks. Service here was courteous and prompt. They did welcome everyone who walked in and that was a nice touch. For those who did need help, I could see them actively trying to find a new size or help bring over a new accessories to match the items they were trying. Overall, I'd love to support a Canadian store that offers quality items that are Canadian made. Totally thrilled with the idea. Maybe in another season I could find a casual and yet cute item there.

The boutique is cute and lovely. I appreciate the showcasing of CANADIAN designers. Honestly though the staff at this location are not the friendliest. This is not my first time having a not so friendly experience with them either. I think .... how you treat people makes a difference, and it can be a deciding factor in if a customer returns.

Pretty disappointed today when I went to both the Roncesvalles and Queen st stores and both had "be right back" notes with no staff inside... And they were having a sale. You'd think they'd have adequate staff for a sale day or staff would not leave the store for 20 minutes to go eat. Pack a lunch maybe?! You may have lost a customer or more today. Previous experiences have been better.

Yelp
Cute shop! A lot of nice clothes, around the $45-$300 range, and super cute jewellery as well. I'd call the style hipster bicycle chick, with a minimalist touch. Very beautiful and easy to wear. The jewellery is where it shines for me, great unique necklaces and fun bags.

Yelp
"It's been a long time since The Coal Miner's Daughter..." Wonderboys. Anyone? One of my all time favourite books and movies. It is, however, completely unrelated to this lovely little boutique... The Coal Miner's Daughter has a few locations in Toronto, and the one on Queen W is by far my favourite. A beautiful simple layout, lots of goodness made by Canadian designers, and a lovely staff. It's one of my go to places for dresses for events and fall threads. If you're a lady who loves shopping and hates the mall, you will be in heaven.

Yelp
VIBE I feel like a lot of boutiques are missing good layout and merchandising. Coal Miner's Daughter has great layout and merchandising. For instance, the cool antlers in the back where their jewlery hangs. The owner is really friendly and genuine. For that, I will be back! THE GOODS Clothes are brand new (and not vintage/reused). I love the Canadian selection here (Daag and Stacey). That said, the shoes are vintage and reused and there's a fantastic selection, that is, if you can find your shoe size. I found myself wanting quite a few things from here. OBLIGATORY CATCHY REMARK No coal here but it does feel like Santa left a few presents.

Yelp
Local designers, accessories. There are a lot of stores in the area with the same kind of focus. After going to three of them they all kind of blurred in my mind. There are some nice things in this store as well, but nothing that I was looking for. Things in this store seemed more on the quirky, casual side, probably for spring/summer. I didn't see any basics in here, I'm probably in the wrong store for that. But I was hoping at least to see one piece I could pick up. Better luck next time maybe.

Yelp
I wanted SOOO badly to like this place but the girls working there seriously ruined it for me. Went in on the recent sale day (Sat Feb 3) and they couldn't be bothered to help anyone-- if they did, it was only after someone asked for help and they did so with snotty attitudes. Their attitudes were absolutely awful. Made me want to walk right out of there and leave. They answered my questions with disdain and actually walked away from me at one point (I thought she was showing me to a rack since she walked away in the middle of our conversation, but instead she just kept on walking to stand in the front???) Whoever runs this place needs to tell these girls to get rid of their attitude and not treat customers like garbage. If I ever shop here again it will be DESPITE the service; certainly not because of it. If you want to feel like you're surrounded by your teenage "popular girl" high school bullies again, then go and visit this location. Yikes
