On the Grid : Coan Park

"Coan Park, Edgewood’s largest public park, is situated along the Trolley Line Trail bordering Kirkwood and is easily one of our favorite places in the area. Aside from lush greenspace, it is home to a wide array of amenities, including a recreation center, baseball/softball field, basketball and tennis courts, children’s playground, picnic pavilions, and an entertainment gazebo. Don’t miss the Coan Park Outdoor Gym, which houses resistance workout equipment available for public use; it’s akin to a playground for adults and well worth a visit." - Green Olive Media

Best park in Edgewood/Kirkwood area. Lots of tennis courts, playground, and open space. Nice little trail too that connects Reynoldstown and Kirkwood

I’ve driven by this park hundreds of times, and never stopped. We just moved to Kirkwood, and now it’s about two blocks away. We’ve been walking here on a regular basis. It large, and there’s a lot of different areas. There’s a large baseball field, another large green space area, a gazebo with several grills, a very cool new outdoor art sculpture, tennis courts, an outdoor gym, and amazing playground, and this very cool little amphitheater area with outdoor xylophones. It’s such a great park. I’m sure there’s even more that we’ve yet to discover. I’m so glad it’s right down the street from us. We love it!

Family reunion at Coan Park. We had use of the recreational center, pavilion & gym. The facility manager was accommodating.

Always nice to walk around this park. It’s regularly maintained, and often lightly busy with fellow neighbors.

Hosted a company event there. Lots of fun, nice pavilion, and grassy area. Bathroom was a little far and limited parking.

Yelp
I've recently laced up my sneakers and got back on my journey to wellness. I'm taking mornings to focus on me and center myself with purpose and intention to have a great rest of the day. In doing so, I either walk or jog around Coan Park. It's a lovely place nestled on the edges of Kirkwood and Edgewood. It sits across from some of the local businesses, as well as some of the areas lovely homes, and Sammye Coan Middle School. The park has a basketball court the looks to be sponsored by the Atlanta Hawks, a large playground area, an indoor area that was used during the election cycle for early voting, covered pavilions, a softball/baseball field, a large grassy area for football, soccer, etc., and workout equipment that comes complete with instructions on how to use each piece. I think the equipment is the best park of the park! Oh, there are plenty of shady areas to rest under on hot summer days, water fountains to keep you and your four legged friends hydrated, and things to do. The park is a great option for exercise, as I see folks out doing yoga and group fitness classes on my morning runs. Try it out and let me know what you think. Now, full disclosure, parking can be scarce when there are plenty of things happening in and around the park, but MARTA runs right nearby and is a great option!

Yelp
Coan Park is right at the border of the Edgewood and Kirkwood neighborhoods, and right across from Coan Middle School. The park has tennis courts, a baseball field, a playground, a fitness 'playground' for adults, a rotunda with picnic seating, outdoor musical instruments, and recreation center. Most of that is self explanatory, but here are my favorite features of the park: -The adult 'fitness' playground. Right next to the children's playground, you'll see less childlike playground equipment. It's your normal fitness equipment but in playground equipment form. It's a really cool feature to the park, and not something I've ever seen before. -The outdoor musical instruments. These are tucked away between the tennis court and rotunda area. They have wood and metal xylophone type bars you can hit and make music with. The park tends to get quite muddy during the rainy seasons, so beware if you're in nice shoes or have you dog with you. Overall, though, this park is great asset to the neighborhood and worth the visit if you're in the area.
