For a weary hiker stumbling off the West Coast Trail or the Juan de Fuca Trail, this little cafe is a shining beacon of delicious food that does not come in a freeze dried package. For all others, it's just a damn good place to get some grub.
The prices are reasonable and the food portions are excellent. You will not go home hungry. After a long hike a real meal is what you need, and if you still can't finish all the fries, you know you got your money's worth.
I'm a big fan of their halibut burger which comes with a delicious black bean salsa on it. The halibut is tender, flaky, and perfect. Wash that down with an Island Lager, some seafood chowder and some sweet potato fries, and the aches in your muscles will melt away. Yes, I had fries and a soup with my meal. I earned it.
The restaurant has a huge menu board you order off at the front with many West Coast selections like fish and chips, buckets of clams, salads, burgers (The Coastal claims 6 oz of Redneck Heaven), wraps and desserts. The interior is beautiful and fun with a nice atmosphere. They have a foos ball table, and the specials board said they have foos ball nights (maybe a tourney?). Also, for the Island folk, Fridays are $2.50 Lucky days. The bathroom is clean, and pretty, with a cool sink. The staff are friendly, though they get a bit slammed during lunch, so while my friend and I got served right away, a couple other hikers we met on the trail joined us a bit later and they had to wait a while for service. Other than that, the experience was excellent, and well worth your time to drop in if you are visiting the area.
I had been looking forward to returning to this place after my first trip 4 years earlier and I was not disappointed.
