The 7 Best Hostels in Edinburgh (Updated 2025)

"Housed in a former courthouse and jail in the Old Town, Code Pod – The Court offers a truly unique stay with some old cells converted into small private rooms and an underground bar that even hosts whisky tastings. The dorms use pod beds with very nice mattresses, individual lights, shelves, and outlets; pods have curtains and the hostel provides earplugs and eye masks so you can sleep well. A delicious breakfast (waffles, pastries, oatmeal) is offered each morning, and there are female‑only dorms as well." - Matthew Kepnes

Amazing location within walking distance of everything right in the heart of Old Town Edinburgh. We stayed in a private room which was comfortable and quiet, however for the price we felt it was missing amenities (such as tea/coffee facilities). On-site laundry and baggage storage were great. All the staff were super friendly and the breakfast combo in the morning was affordable and delicious.

Absolutely incredible hostel - I stay in a pod one night and rented a private room with a friend for two nights. Both were quiet and clean, with nice sheets, USB port chargers, and comfortable beds. Super easy access via code (no room keys required). As a 30-something, it felt like a perfect mix of lively and quiet. In the pods, I loved that there was a separate space for packing so no one was rustling around in the morning - I arrived after a red eye flight from the US and slept shockingly uninterrupted from like 9pm til 8am. In the private room, the bathroom is made of thin, semi-opaque glass, maybe best for someone you're quite comfortable with since you can pretty clearly see each other shower 🙃

I stayed in the 8-bed female dorm and found the location to be perfect — right in the heart of everything. The staff were friendly and helpful, the pod was comfortable, and breakfast had a good variety each morning.||However, the room lacked proper ventilation and got warm even on cooler days. Be aware that the hostel is completely cashless (you can rent a towel for £3 at reception). The shared bathrooms could be cleaner — water from the neighboring shower stalls tends to flow over, which wasn’t ideal. Also, it would be nice to have a separate lounge area beyond the restaurant.||Overall, a good option if you're on a budget and staying for a short visit.

I wasn’t able to sleep here was constantly woken up throughout the night. So I’ve been to many hostels and capsule hotels in Japan full rage from £6-50, which have all been great. But there were serious design flaws of this pod-style hostel because it was so noisy. 1. Opening and closing doors was loud 2. The lockers were inside the rooms meaning people getting their things in and out was noisy 3. The buttons on the lockers beeped 4. Also No plug outlet in pod only usb and usbc 5. People leaving early like 4am and 6am had alarms on which was really difficult for me to feel rested for my plans the next day. It isn’t their fault for being noisy but it’s a design flaw of this hotel - the way these types of hotels operate in Japan are fit for purpose such as quiet doors, having lockers located in the bathroom or providing slippers so it’s quieter in the rooms and asking people if they have an early check out time to make sure those people are in the same room. In Japan there is also rules giving out such as no phone calls in the room past midnight. but maybe people don’t know so there should be some kind of rules so people can try to get as much quiet as possible to sleep. Not looking for luxury but I’m just surprised that it wasn’t built with function in mind. Staff were nice but it’s not something they can fix it’s mostly structural or management.

I chose to stay at the Court for its location and the ability to stay in a private room (solo female traveller and was staying 10 days so didn’t feel keen on a hostel room), and just want to give the whole team there a big shout out. Everyone was welcoming from check in to the restaurant downstairs to checking out, they’re all such lovely people. I stayed in a superior room (I think that’s the name), and it was so spacious which was relieving being there for so long! Obviously the price is a little high given location, but it was very reasonable and ABSOLUTELY worth every cent, I’ll definitely be back for my next Edinburgh stay! I do want to note, the 4th floor I was on had to be accessed by stairs (it’s an old building, so they couldn’t fit the lift through the whole thing of course) so if you require mobility assistance/wheelchair, just contact the team to make sure you’re within floors 1-3 that are all accessible by the elevator. Also there are little events every night to get in touch with other travellers so lots of opportunities to meet people!

I stayed in a mixed dorm at Code Pod — The Court and overall had a really good experience. • Location: Excellent, right in the heart of Edinburgh. • Pods & Cleanliness: The pods were clean, private, and comfortable. Bathrooms and toilets were separate for women and men, and was spacious and well-maintained. (My dorm wasn’t that spacious but it’s okay for travellers) • Atmosphere: Fellow travelers were very respectful, mindful of each other’s presence and belongings, which made the stay pleasant. It felt safe and quiet inside the dorms. • Facilities: They even provide rechargeable fans for your pod if it gets too hot, which was a thoughtful touch. • Staff: While the staff were generally fine, there were moments when I felt they weren’t as attentive as I would’ve liked. • Experience: At first, walking into a shared dorm felt overwhelming since I wasn’t used to sharing spaces, but I quickly got comfortable. The environment and respectful vibe of the other guests helped a lot. Overall, a clean, comfortable, and well-located hostel with a great pod experience. I’d recommend it if you’re visiting Edinburgh and want a balance of privacy and social atmosphere.

As a solo female traveler, I loved staying here! I chose a female only dorm and felt so safe the whole time. The pod rooms were very quiet, the pod was cozier than I expected and had a secure locker for you and a charger inside the pod. The bathrooms were clean and updated and I never had to wait to use the facilities. There’s also several bathrooms so if there is a line at one you can find one down the hall that is likely empty. The location was so conveniently centered right in the middle of the royal mile which made getting around easy. They also have lots of opportunities to meet other solo travelers - just check the daily events they have. Everyone was so friendly and we ended up pub hopping together a few nights! I would absolutely recommend staying here and spending far less than you wouldn’t any other hotel in the area.

I had a great stay here! The hostel is very clean, the staff are incredibly kind and always happy to help, and the evening activities make it easy to meet other guests—even if you’re more on the introverted side. I really appreciated the privacy of the pods, and since I came just after festival season (early September), it was nice and quiet at night. The location couldn’t be more central, which makes getting around super convenient. The showers were excellent—always warm with strong water pressure, which is something I really value in a hostel. A couple of things I missed: there isn’t a shared kitchen where you can cook your own meals. The on-site café and tavern at reception serve good food (with discounts for hostel guests), but since it’s also open to non-guests, it feels a bit more formal compared to a typical hostel kitchen vibe. A squeegee in the showers would also be handy to keep the floors dry for the next person. I liked the idea of the QR code system in the bathrooms to request cleaning—it’s a smart touch. That said, it would be even better if the form allowed you to leave a specific note (like “soap empty” or “need more toilet paper”) rather than just flagging a general clean. Of course, you can always go to reception, but when you’re already in pajamas it feels a little awkward walking past all the tavern customers just to ask for soap. Overall, though, I’d definitely recommend this hostel for its cleanliness, wonderful staff, great location, and social atmosphere.
