10 Best Coffee Shops in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"Coffee ME Up is a small shop with a homey vibe and lots of people chatting, reading, and working. Owned by a couple from Albania, the shop has Middle Eastern influences. The drinks menu has Coffee By Design espresso drinks and coffee, smoothies, herbal teas (hot or iced), and specialty drinks like Turkish coffee and cappuccino freddo, a cold espresso drink with sweetened, frothed milk. Be sure to try the baklava, which are homemade by the owner's mother." - Kate McCarty

Google
I had such a great experience at this coffee shop. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is perfect no matter the weather. The staff was super friendly and attentive, even though they were quite busy. I ordered a latte, and it was absolutely delicious rich, smooth, and expertly made. The pastries looked incredible too, though I didn’t get to try any this time. I’ll definitely be back to sample those and enjoy another cup. Highly recommend this cozy spot!

Loved my morning coffee and the treats we got! The açaí bowl was fresh and delicious! Cute set up. Wish there was more seating but understandably. There are little settings for two mostly. My son got a breakfast burrito and the smoky hot sauce was amazing!

Google
The best latté I’ve ever had (outside of Europe)! And a delicious ‘ham alive’ breakfast sandwich! Do not miss this little gem! Trust me… just go there for coffee and breakfast! It is spectacular!! It’s small. You might have to wait a bit but it’s well worth your while! Might also need a bit of patience to find parking:-)

Google
such a nice spot to grab coffee and a bite. so many pastry options too! i would definitely recommend the maine honey chai latte! the açaí is good too. overall great service and atmosphere with cute outdoor seating.

Google
This place serves great coffee and pastries with a friendly vibe. They have a cozy book corner and keep you updated on all the cool events happening in the city. I tried the Acai bowl, and it was both delicious and filling!

Google
Lovely and charming spot for breakfast! My husband and I really enjoyed the breakfast sandwiches and the delectable blueberry scones. The coffee was also excellent. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made for an overall wonderful dining experience. We highly recommend this place for a delightful breakfast.

Google
Super good cafe in Portland!! Highly recommended and the price is super decent. I go there every-time I visit Portland, very local place!

Google
Great find! Sandwiches were delicious and the liptao spread was chef kiss. Chai latte was flavorful and wasn't drenched in sugar like I've had in many places. Good vegan options as well.

Yelp
We were in Portland for one night and always look for a local coffee shop for breakfast when we are traveling! It was an easy bike ride from our AC Marriott Hotel and did not disappoint! Cold brew was fantastic--with dark and light roast options---and offered in a 24 oz size, rare for small coffee shops! The breakfast sandwiches and burritos we tried were simple, homemade, and reasonably priced, with the unique addition of local Liptao sauce -- a spread made from a blend of Maine mashed potatoes, roasted red peppers, olive oil, and spices! Our son was excited about the delicious strawberry/cream cheese danish he tried. Service was friendly and efficient and we were able to choose from inside and outdoor seating choices. Will definitely return if we are in the area again!

Yelp
Service was wonderful- many working and meeting customer needs. Quick for homemade service. Food was tasty and unique. Albanian influence. Liptao spread on all breakfast choices AND they have byrek with meat or spinach filling. The location is within walking if staying downtown. Clean and inviting. Sit in or out.

Yelp
Not sure why I had never been here before was so great ! They had a sweet and salty latte special that was absolutely delicious, maple syrup and salted caramel it was made perfectly I was debating 2 or 3 expresso shots . A friendly mood and nudge from the owner encouraged me to do the 3 and it was perfect. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. We got a croissant which was really good and a Mean green breakfast sandwich which I highly recommend. Nice looking pastries and a deck out back and sidewalk seating make this a real destination spot.

Yelp
This was a solid spot for coffee, pastries, and other breakfast goodies! There are plenty of options, so you really can't go wrong. I wouldn't say anything was particularly notable to me in terms of the food or drinks, though. If you're coming on a weekend morning, be prepared for a long line. The shop wasn't very big and was pretty packed, so we took everything to go. Not sure if it was a local or seasonal crowd. Generally good vibes, I wouldn't mind coming back at a less busy time.

Yelp
Always yummy. To go sandwiches, fruit bowls available, reliable coffee! Small place with limited seating!

Fernando M.

Yelp
Do you want to have the best breakfast burrito you've ever had? Come here! Also fresh squeezed orange juice, all types of gourmet coffee and pastries, and a veggie sandwich that will blow your mind. Fantastic breakfast shop.

Yelp
Quick coffee stop on my drive to work. Friendly and quick service with a cozy atmosphere. Americano was smooth, tasty, and well balanced. Good selection of pastries. I ordered the biscotti cookie which had a subtle sweet honey flavor and a meringue on top. I'm not sure if it was the texture or flavor that was too subtle but I was personally not a fan of this biscotti cookie.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't been here yet and was pleasantly surprised! Although it's out of the way of the majority of the hustle and bustle of Portland, this place is perfect to get a drink and a treat (or a meal). My iced chai, which has been surprisingly disgusting at other places, was just right and had undertones of cinnamon--yum. The atmosphere was super cozy and inviting, and there was a great amount of indoor and patio seating. Definitely will be back to try out their food and pastries!

Yelp
Was in Portland with the family for vacation. Stopped by here to pick up breakfast around 7am on a Sunday. They said the breakfast sandwich would have a long wait, but it was out in a few minutes. The service was friendly, and they have a ton of coffee and food options. I had the nitro cold brew and a breakfast sandwich. Both were great.

Yelp
Best coffee ever and I am EXTREMELY picky. Amazing food. Just perfect. The Turkish hazelnut has the best flavor ever

Yelp
My family and I came here before the Nutcracker at Merril Auditorium. It was the perfect location for a pre-show coffee and snack. The later was delicious, hot cocoa chocolatey, and the atmosphere just right. It's a smaller little place which makes it that much cozier. I did not partake in ordering anything from the staff and since we were there closer to closing time, staff seemed to be mostly preoccupied with preparing to close. Only thing I will say is the scone we ordered seemed a bit well done however still delicious-- It may also not be made in house, I am not sure. Excited to come here before the next show we attend.

Yelp
Coffee Me Up is probably my favorite coffee shop in Portland. It has street parking but I have always found a spot. You are always greeted warmly by the baristas. The service is quick and prices are good for the quality you get. You get a ticket with a number when ordering which they call when your food/drinks are ready. It's such a cute cozy spot. I love the window seating. They have tables inside and outdoor seating (weather permitting). Nothing like sipping an iced coffee outside in the summer with a breakfast sandwich with company or a good cook. I am obsessed with their homemade liptao spread which is made of mashed potato, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, garlic, chives, olive oil, and spices. It is to die for. My favorite sandwich is the chorizo, egg, and cheese on ciabatta or a fresh bagel. They have an assortment of pastries and goodies to choose from as well. So many drink options. Breakfast and lunch options. I would recommend this place 100 times over!

Yelp
Such a cute spot!! It's cozy enough when you walk in but big enough that you don't feel cramped, although we did come around 10. Not sure what it's like early morning but I'd assume it gets pretty busy. The staff were quick with orders. I got an egg cheese and avocado sandwich on a croissant - The house spread is delicious!!!! The eggs were cooked perfectly. Honestly, it was the perfect breakfast sandwich. Light but satisfying. My husband got a regular black coffee and I got a frozen chai. They were both great. I'll definitely be back to try the pastries. There were so many on display and they all looked really good. This would be a great place to get work done or do some reading at.

Yelp
Such a great space. Conveniently located on the corner. Easy parking and nice seating areas. Indoor and outdoor. Love the bakery options. Love them too much. Bagel today and so yummy. Love having the views of the street and just people watch. Perfect way to start the morning before spending the day with my grandson. Coffee Me Up and ready to go.

Yelp
What a great coffee/ breakfast / lunch spot! Owned by a husband and wife team with a mantra of "small acts of kindness cause ripples" the drinks and food were delicious! All of the breakfast sandwiches come with a schmear of liptao (I had to look it up - mashed potatoes with red pepper, feta, garlic, chives, olive oil and spices - basically the most delicious thing ever!) My only wish was that there was more liptao on each sammie! Coffees were delish, food was great, would definitely come back and support this great business!

Yelp
Amazing food, atmosphere and coffee creations! 3 season sit outside and watch the world go by.

Yelp
Tried for the first time during our trip to Portland. My husband didn't love his hazelnut cold brew (he prefers iced coffee) and mentioned the hazelnut was sweetened. My iced caramel americano was great and the hand squeezed OJ was amazing. The selection of pastries was good - we got a few that were delicious. If we get a chance to go back, I'd grab pastries and coffee! The service was so nice and it was a cute place.

Yelp
Not too shabby for a TooGoodToGo although I think they should cut the order off $1 since similar coffee shop type places in Philly have offered the same type of things for $1 less. Staff is very friendly and bathroom and dining facilities cleanliness is well maintained. Food is respectable.

Yelp
We got an egg and cheese sandwich with veggie sausage, which was very good but we omitted the special spread, which we later regretted. Also got a the power bowl, it was like a green smoothie surrounded by almond butter and topped off with granola, fruit and honey, it was refreshing and yummy. I also got a London fog with vanilla syrup, it was delicious. I ordered on a Sunday morning at 10, so when I got there it was jam packed but the person preparing my order was so sweet and personable. It didn't seem like a place I'd want to sit inside to eat on a busy weekend morning but during a slower time I could see it being a really nice place to sit and eat or chat with a friend.

Yelp
Such a great find! We were looking for breakfast places and just wanted a really solid breakfast sandwich. This hit the spot! My friend and I each ordered the special breakfast sandwich, which had spicy aioli, egg, cheese, tomato, and avocado. It was delicious. We also got the drip coffee. Overall a great start to the day!

Yelp
My wife and I live in the bangor area. We discovered this coffee shop on our honey moon about 2 years ago. Whenever we travel anywhere one of my favorite things to do is check out little coffee shops. I have to say that this place didn't disappoint. Both the breakfast sandwiches and the coffee are the bomb.com. Every time we come back to Portland such as today we make a point of going to Coffee me up. When we first went we were in love with their vanilla chai lattes but having been there multiple times now I'd recommend any of their coffees though I prefer the iced special of the week. I'd also highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches. They are generous with the toppings and they appear and taste like they were freshly made rather than having a frozen heated up egg like you'd get from a fast food joint. I give Coffee Me up a 5 star rating!! We are excited to go back there today!

Katrina M.

Yelp
Coffee me up is picturesque with its local charm and amazing baked goods, sandwiches, and coffee. It's one of our go to spots here in Portland and we absolutely love it. The turkey club is amazing. The cheese danishes and quiche is delicious and elegant and the coffee... chef's kiss. There are other coffee shops within the area but there is something special about coffee me up. Please go to coffee me up to not only try an amazing cafe but to also support local. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
One of the first breakfast places that came up while researching breakfast in Portland so had to take the walk over here. Came over a little later in the morning so it was slightly less busy. We grabbed an Iced Chai Latte, an Iced Vietnamese Coffee, the Breakfast Burrito on a wheat wrap, and the Avocado, Egg, and Cheese on an English Muffin. Food and drinks came out super quickly. My burrito was real solid and pretty big. Great mix of chorizo, rice, avocado and egg. Nothing was lacking and it was pretty flavorful. The sandwich was also pretty solid, loved the spread the most, definitely elevated the sandwich. Pretty solid breakfast spot if you're looking for something a little simple but still really good (and hearty if you want). Also a side note, I accidentally punched an older woman with a stroller while I took off my jacket and she seemed like a regular so again I'm very sorry for that. Don't punch the patrons is another note I guess.

Yelp
Loved! Delicious sandwich and scone. We enjoyed our coffee also! Will return. Don't miss this cute place!

Yelp
Nice spot to grab a coffee and work. Great turkey sandwich! Everything came out super quick despite being a popular place.

Yelp
The sandwiches are great, the space is nice, and the owner is so kind! I love this place

Yelp
Nice place for a quick coffee grab. Nice coffee, fresh bakery, welcoming staff. Cherry danish was delicious.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwich and pastries! There was plenty of outdoor seating in both the front and back!

Yelp
Superb like Parisian cafe Great cappuccino Outdoor seating sunlight Watching passerbys

Yelp
Ran over to Coffee Me Up during a lunch break. Ordered a large Cappuccino and coffee. The Cappuccino is so bitter! Not sure what's going on with the coffee beans today but my Cappuccino was hard to drink...

Zoë L.

Yelp
So so so good, would 200% recommend. We got coffees and breakfast sandwiches plus a few pastries. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Super friendly and delicious. We had the egg sandwiches with "liptao" and also the Super F Green Salad. List of stuff I appreciated: Ample outdoor seating Extremely fresh greens -not a single slimey piece The agreeable way our special requests were received List of stuff I'd have changed: Salt and pepper should be out / not requiring special service from busy staff Something savory (croutons?) on the Super Green Highly recommend; coffee is great too

Pedro L.

Yelp
Most excellent coffee and great sitting outside on the street. Not to miss when you're in Portland traveling from Vermont.
google avatar

Yelp
Great local coffee shop. Excellent service. Quick and easy breakfast and lunch menu. I grabbed a coffee and a salad. Indoor seating and saw a few people working. Definitely check it out

Yelp
Coffee me up was the perfect Portland stop for a quick breakfast. We called in ahead and they told us that they don't take online orders and instead they do it over the phone. We therefore placed a phone order and by the time we got there, probably waited less than five minutes to pick up our order. My breakfast sandwich was so delicious and the perfect amount of feeling. The avocado felt fresh and the orange creamy sauce that was spread on the bread tasted really good. The frappe latte was good, except it wasn't Sweden so I had to go back in and ask for simple syrup. If you're planning to order this and want it to be sweet you might want to tell them ahead of time.
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
Tasty bacon egg and cheese sandwiches in English muffins with cheesy potato spread. Servers were friendly and helpful when ordering. There are many tables to sit with your food and drinks to enjoy and work at. Offer free WiFi.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been getting coffee me up Honey Latte & Breakfast sandwich every single day this week It's honestly become an addiction and I'm not mad about it! The breakfast Avocado, eggs & bacon sandwich with house aioli is AMAZING (I always ask for extra aioli) Their lattes are also perfection & pretty big!
google avatar

Yelp
For years I have been saying that even though Maine has some truly amazing coffee places, they still don't seem to quite reach the level of flavor and smoothness as west coast coffee. That is, until Coffee Me Up came around. The drinks are both flavorful and smooth with subtle yet delicious sweetness that leaves you feeling satisfied, not sugarfied (I just made that up). They also have locally made baked goods with a European flare. The baklava is some of the best in the Southern Maine area, and this is coming from a 1/4 Greek! I feel like Coffee Me Up does not get the credit they deserve as one of the top coffee spots in Portland, and maybe that's ok because the last thing locals need is another good coffee spot with a mile long line every day (see t@ndem bakery)
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
This place was tucked away on a little Corner on Cumberland. They had amazing breakfast sandwiches, they have this spicy aioli spread they put on that melts down over the cheese and egg. One day we had a bacon egg and cheese with the spicy aioli, the next was a ham version. I think the bacon was the best, since the ham had a bit too many red onions but was still amazing. We had the cinnamon caramel latte, which we reduced the amount of flavor pump put in, but it was hot, and delicious. It's definitely a well thought out place, they have a divider and a speaker so the barista taking your order and hear you and vice versa. Love this place, can't wait to come back!

Yelp
This is a very cute and modern coffee shop that has some available street parking and an easy ordering system. I came last week and got a breakfast sandwich (egg, cheese, avocado, vegan sausage) and an iced chai latte. I think it was around $14. They give you a number and call it out when your items are ready, and they were pretty quick - within ten minutes. I LOVED that they had the vegan sausage option - that is so rare to find anywhere! The sausage itself was great, as was the latte. Only downside here was the egg - I have to agree with other reviewers. It's microwaved, which isn't always an issue, but the amount of egg they use makes it into a mushy, brown patty rather than a fluffy egg. It didn't have much flavor and made it kind of not a fun sandwich to eat. If they had a griddle I bet it would bring them up a notch. Super friendly staff though, and a very vast selection of pastries! I'll probably just stick with the non-egg options next time.

Yelp
Clean, modern coffee shop, in a prime location near Portland's Old Port. The menu is unique, offering all the classics, plus Albanian specialties like byrek (savory pie) and liptao spread as the default on their breakfast sandwiches. I placed an order online at 10:30am, with a 10:50am estimated pick up time. I arrived at exactly 10:50am, waited 10 minutes in the crowded store, and then asked about my order. They somehow had not seen it come in, so it was only started once I brought it to their attention. Our breakfast sandwiches were underwhelming. The english muffins were warm and fluffy, enhanced by the flavorful liptao, and generously filled with avocado and ham, respectively. Unfortunately, the eggs were unappetizing. The fluffy yellow exterior enveloped mushy grey layers, almost as though they cooked fresh eggs over old pre-made ones. The drinks, on the other hand, were fantastic. I loved the authentic style Vietnamese Iced Coffee. The dark roast was bold, with hints of chicory, and managed to be sweet and creamy without being cloying. My fiancé got a Chai that was perfectly made as well, full of aromatic spices. Stick to drinks at Coffee ME Up.

Yelp
It's worth the walk or drive. I was visiting Portland for just a day and this place was a bit of a walk from my hotel but absolutely worth it. The coffee and breakfast sandwich were exactly what I was hoping for. Delicious in every way. Go here.
google avatar

TJ N.

Yelp
This place missed the mark for me. I did not try their coffee so I can't comment on that. So he shot himself is really nice the way that the cafe is situated and the lighting is like an intimacy that's really special, the pastry did not follow through. I got two items a chocolate croissant which was lovingly shaped and laminated and crispy. From that perspective it was spot on but the filling was incredibly overly sweet and I was anticipating more bitter and a lot less sweet. The blueberry lemon scone was beautiful to look at, although I think it was slightly overly cooked because of the darkness. A lot of blueberries and a lemon flavor was nice but it was drier than the driest scone I've ever had. But in a slightly day old sort of way rather than that break apart scone that you hope for. I had mild expectations but I would likely not return unless it was the only option in the morning.

Yelp
I stopped by here for breakfast a couple mornings and was so delighted! They have really good egg sandwiches and make such a large variety of smoothies and acai bowls. They also have really nice pastries but I didn't have a chance to try any. Definitely recommend this place! It's a quiet part of town but itself is really nice and the people there were so kind!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
We weee visiting Portland and stopped by. The breakfast sandwich and pumpkin latte were amazing!
google avatar

Deborah C.

Yelp
Stopped by here around noon on a Saturday and while there were a few parties outside, there wasn't a line inside. The menu is robust and there were also a few pastry options when I was there (not too much left since it was later in the day). It took a bit to make our drinks but it was worth the wait. They have a few tables out front and a seating area in the back that I didn't take a look at. Would definitely come by again next time I'm in Portland!
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Adorable spot with an extensive breakfast menu including every kind of breakfast sandwich you can imagine. Super vegetarian-friendly. I ordered one with avocado and their local liptao spread. It was a little tough to eat in the car, because it was *huge,* but it was tasty! I wish I had known I could get it on a croissant instead of an English muffin, but that's my bad for asking. It's very popular so if you're coming on a weekend morning, be prepared for a line and a wait. But it's worth it!
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
Our favorite breakfast/coffee spot when we are visiting in Maine. Love that we can sit outside or in. Breakfast sandwiches are the best and pastries are yummy. Paired with a hot cup of coffee and I am set!
