This is a place for a strange accumulation of subcultures. Being in the basement was a little scary and uncomfortable. But the atmosphere for amateurs. The food was not tasty. I couldn't eat the croissant, my husband and I also rejected the smoothies. Pina colada resembled melted coconut ice cream. Only coffee was amazing.

When you see the mouse on the stairs, go underground for some great coffee and vibey atmosphere. Highly recommend visiting this iconic coffee shop in the heart of downtown Greenville!

Google
Quick service. Great Smoothies and Breakfast! Love the environment and atmosphere. Great space if Wi-Fi is needed and Great food choices. Prices are reasonable for location.

We waited in line just before 11 am on Saturday, 3/22/25. The line was long and moved slowly, but it only took 5 minutes to get our drinks once we ordered. Cool place, low ceilings, tables, couches, and chairs for seating. It was packed. I got an Iced Turtle Mocha ($5), which was supposed to be chocolate and caramel. It didn’t taste like either of those things. My husband got a Vanilla Iced Coffee and it also didn’t taste like vanilla. We both threw ours out after drinking about half. It just wasn’t good.

Such a cute place! I love the layout with the couches. ☺️☺️ I can’t wait to go back and see a show downstairs. It was easy to locate as well which was great since it was my first time visiting downtown Greenville.

Google
Coffee Underground is a cool place. Even the food was delicious. Great prices too! Definitely coming back.

Google
What a great cafe ! Super service, great coffee and lovely scone. The cafe has a really special atmosphere and so cozy and welcoming. The guests range from laptopers, book readers, families catching up on news. An ideal stop when visiting Greenville! Loved it and will define be back!

Google
Coffee underground is a wonderful coffee shop and cafe right in downtown Greenville. Their menu is extensive so non-coffee drinkers can find something for themselves as well. They also have a full service kitchen. We really enjoyed their egg scrambles. The pricing is very reasonable !! The coffee drinks are solid! I like the eclectic vibe inside. There’s definitely a regular crowd that hangs out and does work there — which is nice!

Yelp
I've been a long term customer of Coffee Underground. They have the best coffee in the Upstate. It's a fun environment. I've even held business meetings successfully here. If you're in downtown Greenville it's worth a visit.

Yelp
Fun spot, and truly underground (on Coffee St) in downtown. French press is do it yourself, with instruction. Tons of space to sprawl out whether you're locking in by yourself to do some work, or joining a group for collaborative conversation. Open mic is often offered, hidden away in a room that is even further underground!

Yelp
Visiting Greenville for a wedding we noticed this spot while walking around downtown. Great little coffee spot that has a nice menu of food and beverage options. Stand in line to order and your order is called to pick up at another. Various types of chairs and tables gives it a homey feel. Sit and work, have a meeting, or just stopping for a bit and drink, it's a cool and comfy atmosphere. I ordered a mimosa and Breakfast Crossiant with egg, cheese and, Canadian bacon. Large and delicious.

Yelp
With a name that sparks interest, it delivers by being quite literally underground. This basement coffee shop is cozy, dim, and has a humble feeling atmosphere to it. The cashier was extremely friendly, asking me how my day was and not rushing through the order-taking process. Finally, the strawberry smoothie I had ordered was absolutely delicious! Perfect texture, vibrant flavor, and honestly great pricing for the size I got.

Yelp
Fav place in Greenville for coffee, breakfast/brunch. Quick service and chill bohemian vibe. Need to come back to check out their comedy/bar scene!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop downstairs on Coffee Street. Early morning quiet place to meet friends or work. Service was prompt at the counter but you have to really listen well to hear your name called when your order comes up if you've not sat close by. My husband ordered an omelet that he said was "meh" so we didn't go back another day.

Yelp
Line was long on a Sunday morning but it moved quickly. Brian muffin with pecans was delish, as was the bagel and lattes.
google avatar

Yelp
I usually never drink hot coffee (always get it iced). But, I tried just their regular hot latte and it was one of my favorite cups of coffee I've ever had. Their breakfast plates and burritos are also really good. I definitely recommend checking out this place if you're in Greenville

Yelp
Very cute place! Much bigger than you'd expect. Good service, good food, good coffee! What more could you want!

Yelp
So cute ! What a quaint little location. Make sure you don't miss the stairs that lead down to the coffee shop and alchemy comedy improv theatre. We couldn't resist stopping in for a quick carrot cake after our show. We highly recommend this location for having good service, an inviting atmosphere, and delightful offerings.

Yelp
Good vibes and coffee. I went for morning coffee/smoothie and again for desert later that night. The strawberry cake was to die for. Would definitely go back again.

Yelp
Although they may not have my favorite coffee around, their food is incredible. And the ambiance of the entire place... wow. The back area with the booths and also the open area are so nice. Last time I came here I had a salad with Caesar peppercorn dressing... wow. My boyfriend couldn't stop mooching off of it. Truly incredible. Also had a BEC with Gouda that was fire.

Yelp
Been a long, long time since I've visited Coffee Underground- but needed a couple of hours to work, focus and caffeinate. Couldn't have been happier. Ambience was just as chill and warm as I remembered... and the triple Americano was a 10 / 10!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee nice their surroundings was beautiful. It's like a little coffeehouse with books.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool literally-underground spot. The seasonal cherry limeade was so tasty I absolutely annihilated it in a few sips. The frozen lemonade turned a bit too slushy and was hard to sip after a while. The cinnamon roll and brownie cupcake were both pretty good. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
I love the vibes of this place, it's literally underground which I didn't expect, you have to go down a flight of stairs to get to it! The day I went it was during the St. Paddy's day parade that was going on downtown so the line was really long, but I wouldn't expect it to be like that every day? Either way, the service was really fast and I got Lucky Charm Coffee in celebration of St. Paddy's day. It was just an Irish Cream coffee, but it was delicious! My friend got a brownie cupcake that had a cream cheese filling and it was heated up and I took a bite of it and it was so bomb! I was eyeing their cheesecake also, which looked delicious and I totally would've gotten it if I hadn't eaten so bad the previous days. Anyways, I highly recommend this place if you're visiting Greenville!

Yelp
Cool coffee spot & easy to miss. Cool setting and really good dessert options. The pie and cheesecakes were really good! Great pricing, fun atmosphere, Don't miss this spot if you are in the area!

Yelp
Delicious coffee in an interesting space. I also love that there's SO much seating. They were super busy, but we were able to find a spot very quickly.

Yelp
I absolutely love this coffee shop in Greenville! Not only do they have amazing coffee, like the Italian espresso macchiato, they also have some of the best breakfast and pastries. It's such a nice place to hide away and enjoy sipping your coffee. I love that it truly is underground, and is a local gem. You won't find the same quality of food and drinks at a chain cafe! As always the staff is helpful and friendly. We were having a hard time narrowing down which pastries we would try, and they patiently guided us along. Though, I do wish we could order everything! My husband always makes sure to bring me by this cafe when we are in Greenville. I will say, it my favorite coffee shop we have been to.

Yelp
After a long day of work, my boyfriend and I wanted to do winter things in downtown Greenville. What other way to do this than get hot chocolate and view Christmas trees! I wanted special, authentic hot chocolate, so we took a gamble to see if this coffee shop had any. To our surprise, they did! We got the Snow Bunny - white hot chocolate and peppermint drink and Mexican hot chocolate. We loved both! The drinks were smooth and not scalding hot (like other places). Service was fast and very kind. I loved the vibes! I'm considering to make this a new winter/Christmas tradition. Thanks Coffee Underground!

Yelp
Great place to kick back and relax with a good cup of coffee. They have desert choices and food options. But go for the coffee, try a bite and stay for the atmosphere and service. Cool place.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little place. Good breakfast options and drink choices. Quiche is very good. Friendly service

Yelp
It's a nice break from a national coffee chain. What an excellent place to get coffee. It has an old charm with comfy sitting area. It's a place for chatting and enjoying hot coffee inside a mug. Definetly a jewel at the heart of downtown of Greenville.

Yelp
Pretty cool place to come and hang out and their drink and food selections are pretty good. I love their lattes and smoothies. The service is typically pretty quick, but they get crowded at peak times and it can get very claustrophobic and if that bothers you I would recommend going at a less busy time. But it is worth it when you go
google avatar

Nicolette O.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite coffee shop! Their coffee is so fresh every time and their flavors are just high quality and incredible. I always have to stop by when I'm in the area. Always recommend this place to friends who are visiting!

Yelp
Great food and really good coffee!! And matcha! The line was long when we went but moved fast. Definitely would come again!

Jana P.

Yelp
Tried dessert here. The peanut butter pie and the chocolate chip pecan pie with ice cream. The warmed chocolate chip pecan pie was excellent. It did not look great but the taste was superb. The peanut butter pie was also very good but not as good as the pecan. Could only give 4 stars because I wanted the strawberry cake but they were sold out. This is a hidden gem for a holiday dessert. I went on Mother's Day. You should try it.

Yelp
The ambiance is amazing! Its a little hidden shop down some stairs. We found it just walking around. The coffee was great!! Loved it! Would def recommend.

Bryana G.

Yelp
This is a great little coffee shop, with excellent service and even better coffee. I had the white mocha and it did not disappoint, although if you order this expecting it to resemble Starbucks, think again. It is slightly sweet with a pleasantly strong coffee flavor, overall exactly what I wanted. The cheesecake was good, although I was not expecting it to have a gingersnap crust. Gingersnap is not my preference so I wouldn't get it again, however it did pair very well with the coffee. I was able to sit and read for a few hours and look forward to trying more menu items

Yelp
A greenville staple through and through! Awesome coffee spot with great coffee and espresso and tons of flavors to spice up your drink. I'm talking anything from the usual caramel or vanilla to raspberry and Irish crème. The Irish crème latte, caramilla and OG vanilla lattes are our favorites. Also, do yourself a favor and get a little pastry (or cake slice) to satisfy your sweet tooth. The cream cheese brownie is sooo good! The bagels and breakfast sandwiches are always a hit too! Don't be surprised if you find a line here during the week or even on the weekend. It moves fast and is worth the wait

Yelp
Been to coffee underground twice now and both experiences have been great. Quick service with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. I had a latte with oat milk and flavor my first visit, the coffee was really good. The second visit I had a pina colada smoothie and my husband had a berry lemonade smoothie; we loved them!!

Kate M.

Yelp
From the minute I walked in, I was overwhelmed by the crowd and the small space. The inside is extremely dark, I almost tripped multiple times. The WiFi is an extreme issue. I think it is common knowledge that a coffee shop is a place for people to come and get work done electronically, especially with the abundance of college aged kids in the area. However, it ended up being about impossible for anything to load. They give you a code which just doesn't work at all. So after I waited in line for 20 min, I sat down at a table that was pretty much completely in the dark. I was unable to do any work because 1. The WiFi and 2. The lighting. Personally, I enjoy being able to see the person next to me when I'm in a public setting. After about 30 of waiting for a bagel and a coffee, I received the food, which was good, not great. The tables have high wooden bench ends (which I couldn't see, BECAUSE OF THE LIGHTING) and I currently have a large bruise on my left quad from trying to leave this place. The only good part was the motivation for me to finish my coffee so I could go home. Also, they made us wipe down the tables which just annoyed me. Overall, bad experience, I do not recommend.

Yelp
This is a regular stop of mine whenever I'm in town. The coffee is really tasty but was brings be back time and time again is the fact that it's locally owned and the all of the seating. From couches to private booth with curtains that can be pulled, Underground is a fabulous place to catch up on those emails. There's also nothing pretentious or snooty about it which is an added plus.

Yelp
Great Breakfast place Fast and easy location. Great Menu with different selection of breakfast menu items
google avatar

Avery D.

Yelp
Coffee Underground is just how the name suggests slightly underground and it definitely plays on that bus station like vibe. I was a little confused at first because you can't order a 12 oz latte. But the more coffee the better so I was presented with a large mug! Honestly I was apprehensive at first but the latte was quite good! The people were friendly and it's definitely a place for excellent people watching!
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
We came in for breakfast on a busy Sunday morning. Even though it was busy service was fast! I ordered eggs over medium, bacon, fruit cup and croissant and my daughter had the apple pancakes. We both had lattes. Everything was excellent. Staff were friendly and we loved the vibe.

Yelp
Wonderful little "hidden gem"! Pun intended! Stumbled upon this while waiting to meet our friends for a night out. Pros: fair priced, excellent desserts, great tasting coffee, and hands down top 3 service I've had since pre-Covid! Seems like a popular pick for the area!

Yelp
You might have walked past this if you didn't know it was there, but just walk down the flight of stairs and you'll find one of the best coffee shops ever. A basic cuppa is great. More advanced drinks are also great. The space is wonderful and it's both a spot to 'work' remotely and a wonderful date location. The menu is limited but the quality is top notch. The back room hosts standup comedy and more. I don't know that you can find any other cafe in town that is more essential to Greenville than this one.

Yelp
Love this place when we visit Greenville. They know how to make coffee drinks with a wide variety of options as well as some small bites food. They do get very busy and the kitchen can run quite slow for food. So if your short on time this would it not be a quick stop by. Located as the name refers to underground just a few steps down but downstairs. Cozy comfortable atmosphere with plenty of couch and table seating. My favorite is the coconut nutty coffee ! They also offer all the alternative milk options should you desire. Located more in the center of downtown parking can be a little slim but worth the walk.

Yelp
Me and my buddy were just driving threw Greenville and wanted to stop for some coffee and came across Underground Coffee. Absolutely amazing coffee with an even better atmosphere.
google avatar

Alexis Andrea N.

Yelp
Three words: Apple Cider Pie. Amazing! Great, creative, delicious menu. Also got almond milk latte with HABANERO cinnamon syrup talk about fire. Delicious, the perfect amount of spice. They also have lots of spiked hot drinks which I'd like to try out post work hours. Really chill space with lots of comfy couches and character. Pie was bomb, in case I needed to say it. Sweet, flavorful, tender apples, light and delicate crust and crumble topping.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Part kitch theatre, part underground beatnik hangout. Excellent for meeting and catching up with friends.

Yelp
Came here for the first time ever in 2005 and have been a loyal customer throughout all the years. Absolutely love this place, it's a major Greenville mainstay, and it's always been great every time I've gone.

Yelp
Cool vibe for morning coffee or later drinks. Dark & cozy to neat the heat or get a speakeasy atmosphere. Not fancy
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee is great, employees were really attentive and spoke clearly. I love the old feel almost like being in a speakeasy back in time I really recommend it!

Yelp
On our way to an evening of jazz, to hear Wheel Sessions, we arrived early to grad a light dinner. Casual, delicious, with a staff of warm and friendly professionals. It was a treat on all levels and an easy choice for a return. J

Yelp
A coffee shop that sits on Coffee Street that happens to be located underground...in downtown GVL. That's is exactly the place that Coffee Underground happens to be and I absolutely adore it! As mentioned, located in downtown Greenville and literally in the basement level of a building sits Coffee Underground. A funky, dingy, eclectic and chill coffee shop that slings the best brews and teas, along with some yummy snacks and meals. While I have not been privy to their hot food, I have laid eyes on it coming out of the kitchen and if it tastes half as good as it looks, then I am sold. I happened in here on our latest visit to GVL in search of my beloved Iced Mocha. I luckily found just that and a delicious blueberry muffin to add. Additionally, I was tasked with finding a lemonade, and who would have known that they served frozen lemonade too! However, I will say that the lemonade was super tart. We had to water it down a little as it was like drinking a lemon warhead. Either way, as you would imagine, I was a happy camper to get my mocha drink, a muffin and a lemonade all in one stop. Ordering was easy, the place is pretty small, at least the entry way, which doubles as the queue area. When I arrived, the line was to the door. Once I got inside of the door, folks started lining up the stairs. This was partially because of social distancing, but either way...I can see this place getting crowded. The good thing is they were efficient at getting their orders in hand and getting them to a table or back out the door. My order, I got my mocha and muffin before I even left the register and then waited about 2 minutes before my lemonade made it's way down. Overall, I was impressed with Underground Coffee. If I was a full time resident of GVL, this would definitely be my spot. It's got a solid vibe with friendly and efficient service, good prices and a great product.
