The French Riviera Is an Art Lover's Dream — Here's How to Plan Your Perfect Trip

"At the Collection Lambert in Avignon I stroll through contemporary works assembled by dealer Yves Lambert — major pieces by Basquiat, Nan Goldin, and Anselm Kiefer — and appreciate the museum’s calm galleries and garden." - Rachel Donadio Rachel Donadio Rachel Donadio is a Paris-based writer and former European culture correspondent for The New York Times. This is a major contemporary art museum in Avignon, founded in 2000 through a generous donation by renowned French collector Yvon Lambert. Initially established with his personal collection, it is now jointly operated by France’s Ministry of Culture and local authorities. The museum is housed within two adjoining 18th-century aristocratic mansions — the Hôtel de Caumont and Hôtel de Montfaucon — offering an elegant architectural contrast to the contemporary works it displays. The collection is notable for both its scale and quality, featuring works by some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibitions are organized on a rotating basis and often take the form of curated thematic or solo shows. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.

Spent two hours in the museum and loved it! The building is impressive and the collection is beautiful! We enjoyed the diversity of the media presented. Also the stuff was super friendly and helpful ✨

Excellent contemporary art museum opened in 2000 by private collector Yves Lambert. Often exhibits controversial art by artists such as Andres Serrano. This museum is worth a visit while in Avignon.

I travel a lot and I can say that this museum has one of the best collections of contemporary art that I have seen in the last 2 years. Especially when compared with other major museums, which often have rather boring expositions.

Amazing experience. It is the best art gallery we have been to this year. We had a guide and her knowledge was amazing. She helped us with the background knowledge and interpretation. Her English (and her colleagues) was perfect. We enjoyed it so much - we were exhausted at the end!!❤️🤓🐒

A relaxing contemporary museum of arts with plenty of space to just enjoy the environment. Wasn’t many people during our visit which was great as it allowed us to truely enjoy the surrounds. The restaurant La Violette was closing so we didn’t manage to try but I’ve been advised (by the locals) it’s a must try. Good facilities to cater for all walks of life.
