Ah, Collingwood. Nothing's better than waking up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to hobble down to their big ol' dirt lot, and interact with some of society's most.. interesting people. I've said it to friends before, and I'll say it on here - if there were ever a place that was like visiting Tatooine's market (from Star Wars, for you less nerdy types), this would be it. There's people selling broken electronics, boxes of rusty tools, various trinkets, jewelery, some useful knick knacks, and even the random table that has boxes of expired food for sale. I keep expecting to see Chewbacca walk by, seriously.
Joking aside, there's actually some pretty decent stuff to be found here for a good price, if you're up for both haggling and digging through literally hundreds of boxes of absolute trash. There's some tables that a few vendors must rent on a weekly basis (along the fence), since they always have the same garbage that they just leave there during the week, covering them up with tarps at the end of the day. Other tables are usually occupied by people who are just cleaning out their garages, or the occasional crazy hoarder type who thinks everything he owns is worth a million dollars. If you're going to sift through the piles of stuff for something, try to have at least an idea of what it's worth beforehand.
The building has a bunch of permanent vendors inside, including one absolute nut job hoarder who's stuff literally spills into the aisles, most of it broken. A few food stands are inside as well, including a place that has some pretty great kebabs. One area you need to hit if you come here are the "pickle ladies" in the middle. It's two women who make homemade pickles for sale, stored in giant barrels, and are quite frankly some of the best I've ever had.
Coming here is a true treasure hunt, and can be really fun and nostalgic if that's your cup of tea. If you come in the dead of summer, bring some water to drink - the dirt lot heats up fast.
