Sauvies is beautiful, I love living here because of it (Seattle transplant). The water is usually shallow close in, a little cold but good once you get used to it. They have a clothing optional side (pay attention to signs) that is past all the stairs and in the gravel side of the parking. Parking can be a bit tough sometimes because it is so popular, so allow time for that and be sure to put sunblock on before you get in your car or you'll probably end up getting burnt on your walk in like I always do. You may be towed if you double park, park on the right side or illegally without a parking permit (you can buy it at the store on your left hand side right past the bridge as you go in). Sometimes there is an ice cream boat selling icecream, last year when I went there were pirates going around who you could pay to take photos with. Also, be sure to bring trash/dog #2 bags and pack out your trash, there are trash cans sporadically in parking areas :) Sauvie's Island is a wildlife sanctuary. People tend to get a little wild in some areas, more so areas of clothing optional side so be weary of that if you're bringing little ones. There are not a lot of porta potties (this is an understatement), so may want to bring baby wipes/tp just in case. They have a cool metal huge ufo art structure to check out at the third sign in once you hit the gravel, a lot of young people tend to hang out around it. All the walking paths have signs and I have observed small numbers on the top left corner of at least one sign if you want to make locating friends easier. For the most part, it is pretty safe unless you start partying with the wrong people, I guess (I've never seen violence, but have heard of a fight occurring yesterday?). My friend once told me creepy guys took photos of her naked..I guess bring sunglasses? I never noticed anyone doing that, but then again, I wasn't looking around much. I went as a single female by myself several times and have felt pretty safe. Even on the clothing optional side, you don't have to be part nude and some people keep swim suits on; sometimes there are families, too. People are generally very friendly (this is Portland, after all). Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, the last end of the beach tends to be more "gay friendly" meaning a lot of gay guys tend to hang out down there. (When I went, I was told this by a gay male when I wondered why it was all single, attractive men who were ignoring me when I tried to talk to them lol). Sometimes people bring boom boxes, boat in, jet skis, etc. Tons of fun, after all!
