I enjoyed my meal at Colombia in Park Slope since I had been craving a meal that fit the bill of comfort food and at a restaurant I had never tried. I walked past the storefront and noticed they offered arroz con Pollo and I was sold because who doesn't love the universal starch and protein mixed with warm flavors?
The service was excellent--very friendly, very welcoming. When my food arrived it looked beyond what I was hoping for and tucked right in like the hungry gringo I appeared to be on this night. The dish is certainly a large enough portion for most, laced with shredded chicken and dotted with peas all throughout. It's a reasonable spice level, which is to say, not very spicy at all, but while I've never been to Colombia, I am to understand that this is about right. I was offered two different "hot sauces" which I put in quotes because one was a chipotle aoli and the other was an incredibly delicious jalapeno/cilantro type of dressing. I splashed the jalapeno/cilantro all throughout the dish, except the serving size was a bit small, so I asked for a second. I was also told by my server that this is made on-site, not from a bottle or jar. Excellent ::air guitar solo::
I want to say my arroz con pollo was perfect but unfortunately I found the dish juuuuust a little dry, hence my request for another dose of sauce. I also found the chicken to be just a tad overdone, which really gave my teeth a workout since I had to chewchewchew a bit more than I hoped for.
The star of the dish, though, were the sweet plaintains served around the perimeter of the dish. Perfectly firm, perfectly sweet, and an excellent component to the spices that brought the dish to life.
Give Colombia in Park Slope a shot when you may feel undecided about where to eat. I removed one star for the dryness of the dish and one more for having to request another dose of the sauce, which in my opinion, should be served in a larger dish along with the main course.
