I can't say that Comal y Canela was on my radar, but I'm always down to check out a Mexican-themed restaurant.
So it was that we arrived at Comal y Canela right as they opened on a recent Saturday. It's an exceedingly small joint but we managed to snag one of the few booths.
We were quickly presented with a small bag of fresh nachos and three hot sauces of varying spice levels, which turned out to be an ideal way to start our meal. The nachos were crispy and delicious, while the hot sauces were all really tasty and flavorful. A little while later, we were presented with a fourth sauce, a peanut-based concoction, and that one turned out to be my absolute favorite.
My dining companion had heard that their Birria Tacos ("3 crispy golden tacos filled with pulled beef birria and melted cheese. Accompanied with lime wedges, diced onion, cilantro, house hot sauce of your choice and consomme") were exceptional, so obviously we had to order that. They're terrific. They're cooked perfectly and full of delicious, tender meat. The accompanying components all enhance the tacos perfectly, and that consomme, which is loaded with shredded beef, is absolutely incredible.
Somehow that wasn't the highlight! We also ordered the Michoacano Burrito ("Giant flour tortilla with an inner cheese crust, black bean purée, tail to snout diced braised pork, onion, avocado, crema fresca and queso fresco"), and to call it incredible is almost an understatement. This now ranks as one of the best burritos I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot of burritos. Everything just works so well, from the irresistible cheese to the tender, delicious pork to the perfectly-pressed exterior, and I honestly could've eaten about eight of those things in one sitting.
I also want to shout out the service, which was super friendly and helpful from start to finish. Comal y Canela is pretty much the definition of a hidden gem.
