When my family and I first arrived to El Combate Beach Resort, the appearance was none other than a Hispanic Motel. There were only two floors, and no elevators (leaving only the first-floor rooms accommodating wheel-chaired guests...there was a ramp to the lobby, however).
The lobby was small, and the gift shop was even smaller -- wasn't even a gift shop because there was not even an abundance of souvenirs for sale. The receptionists were also the hosts and waiters/waitresses... would you trust a 3-in-1 shampoo/conditioner/body wash? Despite assuming many roles in the hotel, the staff were always pleasant and very approachable. Additionally, the hotel was very clean.
One piece of advise that I would give to improve this hotel would be to incorporate a shuttle-bus system, as there are not many restaurants, shops, or landmarks within walking distance.
The only walking-distance feature of this hotel is the beach... and the water was cloudy, but that's none of my business. But I saw a really cute crab, and the bar on the beach sold pretty cheap alcoholic drinks ($7 for a piña colada/mojito).
There was no entertainment, period. However, the silence was a nice change of pace... plus the wifi didn't work, so you really had to meditate.
Also, there's no room service, so you best stock up at the local Walgreen's 20 mins away for any snacks or drinks (there is a fridge in every room and microwaves as well in some of them).
Finally, the AC system there is a beast. You WILL freeze if you aren't careful... and plus you shouldn't keep it running anyway.
This was a solid hotel overall.
Would I return? No.
Would I recommend? ... and ruin my rep?? No.
Is the hotel prepared for serious weather? Yes (2 back-up generators)
Overall experience? Fine.
