Yelp
Once again, Yelp reviews were helpful. This place most definitely deserves 4 stars but the "Waffle Nazi" made our trip horrible. I would additionally like to give her a new moniker: "Snoopy Lady" because by God she was extremely interested in our business.
Our whole ordeal started out the day before. We planned a last minute getaway to Carmel as we had stayed at the inn next door last year - The Village Inn.
However, Comfort Inn blows The Village Inn out of the water. Mostly because of two things: (i) Excellent rooms, & (ii) Free breakfast.
First, for the Positives:
Like I mentioned above, this place has newly renovated rooms with tasteful furniture, fixings, furnishings, flat screen TV, cable (with tons of Comcast channels), free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, free parking and a fantastic location.
Breakfast consists of bagels, muffins, freshly made waffles, juices, 2 types of cereal, coffee, tea, milk, hot chocolate, and a variety of fruits. You can't beat that for the price of FREE.
Their website mentions "Complimentary daily USA TODAY Newspaper", however we did not get any. Not that it matters much in this day and age of always-on Internet...but just saying!
Free parking with an impeccable location (at the heart of downtown) is also a breath of fresh air. Parking is scarce though, but we got a spot within 5 minutes of our arrival.
Their in-room amenities include:
- Coffee Maker
- AM/FM Clock Radio
- Iron/Ironing Board
- Hairdryer
- 25" TV w/ Cable, Phone
- In Room Microwave & Refrigerator (especially nice because we had leftovers)
Yes, all of the above was there and in good functioning order. However, in our room, the thermostat cover was broken. A quick call to front desk resolved the problem, and the heater was back in working order. Apparently, the thermostat cover was broken, but the unit itself was working just fine.
Now, for the Negatives:
As most other people have mentioned here, the main issue is with "Waffle Nazi" or as I call her, "Snoopy Lady".
I believe it might be a cultural thing, but it comes across as extremely condescending. During breakfast, she asked me if I needed help with the waffle maker. When I said yes, she helped me out. But her tone sounded as if she was ordering you around. She was super concerned on how much breakfast you were putting on your plate. I avoided eye contact and watched TV in the lobby while preparing waffles and toasting bread.
Seeing that we were not going to eat in the lobby, and take the food back to our room, the "Snoopy Lady" asked if we had a baby or teenager in our room. I said no. She had no business asking us if we had any babies or children if we did not request a rollaway or crib.
I understand when people check in to a King Room with an extra person (or two) and then request for a rollaway bed. It is perfectly justified for the front desk to tack on an extra charge at that time.
"Snoopy Lady's" attitude issues started even before we booked our room. The day before our trip (we had a last minute getaway) I called the hotel to check whether they had a AAA rate. I was unable to get a AAA rate from their website reservation system (it somehow does not show you that option if your trip is within 24-48 hours, go figure).
She asked me to call back as she was "busy." I called back again in 45 minutes, and she said she had a AAA rate for a King room. I requested her to book that room for me. She said "Are you sure? There is no cancelation!" She additionally stated, "Take your time and figure out if you really want to book it and then call back."
After some time I called back again, and we went through the same set of questions. I finally said that I was absolutely certain that I would not have to cancel (and that I understood the cancelation policy). She asked me if there were any kids or teenagers with us. I said no.
At the day of check in, she asked me again if I had any kids or teenagers. I said no. She said if I was sure? I said yes. Finally, at breakfast she asked if we had kids or teenagers because we were going to take the breakfast and eat in our room! Are you serious?
Another thing that struck me is that "Snoopy Lady" called at 11:03 AM in our room to tell us that "it is check out time." Check out time is 11:00 AM and I completely understand that you have to clean the room before another party checks in at 3:00 PM. But at least give your guests an extra 15-20 minutes to get their luggage out. How's that for customer service?
We finally grabbed our bags and left the room at 11:10 AM. Went down to the lobby to check out and settle our bill. Seeing that there were only two of us, "Snoopy Lady" had me sign the check. As soon as we exited the lobby, she rushed (I should say ran) towards our room to check whether there was an extra person hanging out (or hiding to get in our car).
Driving in front of our room, we saw "Snoopy Lady" loitering around our room to see if a third person would magically appear and get into our car. Are you serious?
