Batalion Comic Book Museum and Club – Prague, Czechia - Gastro Obscura

"Walking into Prague’s Batalion Comic Book Museum and Club, you would be forgiven for thinking that you’ve wandered into a bar decorated from Roy Liechtenstein’s sexual nightmares, but this museum/club is actually a love letter to Czech comics pioneer Kája Saudek. A leading voice in the underground Czech comics scene of the 1970s, Saudek took inspiration from American artists such as Robert Crumb. His works often depicted large-breasted women in lurid situations but contained pointed satire and criticism of Czechoslovakia’s communist regime. A number of his works were banned during their initial release, and his work was not made available in full until the 1990s. Saudek died in June of 2015, but his work continues to live on in the permanent gallery above the Batalion Bar in Prague. The space is owned by a father-son team, the elder of which was a friend of Saudek’s. The gallery located on the second floor of the club holds a number of Saudek’s original pages under glass. The bar space itself is decorated with enlarged color versions of his panels, with sensational figures of half-naked women and angels popping out of nearly every surface. Unsurprisingly, this also adds to its raucous atmosphere. (Make no mistake, this is also a standard crazy-weekend bar). Should you fall in love with Saudek’s work, the Batalion also sells reproductions, shirts, mugs, and memorabilia. Fans of comics, rebellion, drinking or simply unknown artists could well do for a visit to this bar that certainly would have been banned at an earlier age. Update as of January 2022: Although the museum is now closed, the bar is still open. A cool and rare shop in our landscape. For fans of comics, movies, superheroes and more. There are puppets and music and a lot of nostalgia. Not to be missed even if you don't intend to buy, just fun to see

AWESOME store for geeks and nerds alike - or just big fans of movies, comic books, TV series and much more... I find this place amazing and next time in Prague I am definitely coming back to look for more stuff to carry home (don't worry - I will find room at home to buy more stuff 😁 !)

I can’t understand why this store is so well reviewed… it has a decent amount of comics and collectibles, but the single issues are awfully collected in the centre of the store. You won’t find anything you may look for because the alphabetical order seems more like a recommendation rather than a norm. The newest issues I could find were ten years old (Bendis X-Men era) and not any issues most people would care about. It felt like an old collection of someone, and only some scraps were left. The trades and Omnibus comics were a decent selection but no bargain. It seems like the main focus of the store lies on collectible items, which are plenty to find in the store. If you’re looking for comics, you might be a bit disappointed, but toy collectors will have their fun.

It’s not that bad, but it’s not that much for foreigners. Lots of time you will spend to find something on English, because most of it its on Czech language.

very well-stocked and very beautiful to look at, it is a pity not to have been able to buy anything (obviously the Italian language was missing)
