Solo Trekking Was Just Banned in Nepal—What Does That Mean for Travelers?

"Community Homestays curates hiking programs with a focus on homestays and unique cultural experiences, such as learning to write the ancient Newari script with bamboo or taking a cooking class with your Tharu tribe host. The cost is based per experience, with prices per hike or activity around $20 to $30 USD."

This was truly great! During a business trip I had the opportunity to stay the weekend at a Panauti Homestay where I was pampered by the friendliest host with great hospitality and delicious Nepali dishes. A warm shower and a comfortable bed to refresh and rest were there after a bike ride with Panauti Bike Station with a practically new Trek bike on the hilliest ride I ever did (as a Dutchman). And what I did not expect: super fast WiFi, nice for my photo uploads. An excellent way to get a glimpse of ‘real life’ in Nepal. Well organized and a heartwarming concept of community based tourism. Thank you!

The Patlekhet Community Homestay is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a quick weekend break from Kathmandu, or who want to continue hiking around the hills and villages just outside the city. About 40 kilometres from Kathmandu, the scenery here is entirely rural. Patlekhet is situated in the hills, with views across to the high Himalaya in the north, and with dramatic cultivated farmland all around. A major attraction of staying at the Patlekhet Community Homestay is the food. The motto of the Patlekhet Community Homestay is, “Far from your home but close to your heart”, and that sums up the experience you’ll have in this small farming village. Sixteen homes in Patlekhet cater to visitors with homely homestay accommodation. Like at all accommodation in the Community Homestay network, you’ll get a private room with a comfortable bed and basic furniture, and access to a bathroom with running water and a Western or Nepali-style squat toilet.

I went to Bardia Community Homestay on May with group of friends. We had wonderful host tharu family who were very caring and made us feel like we are part of their family. We went for Village visit and experienced the sunset from Machhan tower which was amazing experience. We started the activities of next day with Nature jungle walk in community forest. This community forest are the great assets and marvels providing tourist attraction and fresh air which play crucial role in meeting the basic needs of people generating employment and raising incomes which is the foundation of development. We were able to witness Rhinos, different varieties of birds , deer , elephant, Wild Buffaloes. After the walk, we headed back to our home stay feeling hungry and tired but were surprised with delicious meals served by our host. We were very excited to see the Royal Bengal Tiger in Jungle , however due to sunny day and hot climate, Tiger rarely come out of its cave, that's what the jungle guide told us but at least we were happy to see its footprints. We spotted herd of deer in a grassland, elephant bathing in ariver , gharial crocodile, brown fish owl, Rhinos, Monkeys and other wild animals. The other attraction were museum which displayed the Traditional Tharu Culture, Cultural Dance shows, Village Walk etc. One can also extend their stay by participating in further activities like rafting ,canoe trips, fishing , bi-cycle exploration , tharu cooking etc. Overall it was an incredible experience in Bardia. Unconditionally recommended !!

A perfect social enterprise to find community based tourism experience in Nepal. CHN offers many those homestays experiences which benefits local people especially women and children and sustainable tourism is more focused.

I've got the chance to stay in three Homestays in the east of Nepal. Two nights in Ilam (Shree Antu), one of the new ones for 2 nights in MaiPokhari and for 3 nights in Namje. It was an amazing experience, the Homestay owners are so welcoming and friendly! I truly felt at home during my stays and everytime we needed to leave one of the homestays we felt sad. The people who are looking for remote, I really recommend to go to MaiPokhari, which is also the start of many trails :) I definitely will go again!!
