The Best Things to Do in Melbourne (Updated 2025)

"I toured Como House and Gardens and enjoyed its 160+ years of history and classic Italianate architecture — it's considered one of the best historic houses in the city and guided tours (15 AUD) offer a glimpse into 19th-century high-society life; the gardens are free to enter with set opening hours." - Matthew Kepnes

A wonderful historic home. The grounds are free but you can only see the house as part of a guided tour. The tour of the house is well worth doing. Trish was an interesting guide with an excellent knowledge of the history of the house. Almost all furnishings are original - acquired by the National Trust along with the house. If only the walls could talk - such an interesting and opulent history in its heyday. Thoroughly enjoyable.

🏛️ Como House, Melbourne – A Bit of a Letdown This Time We visited Como House on a Tuesday, hoping to explore its historic interiors and beautiful grounds. Unfortunately, the house itself wasn’t open for viewing, which was disappointing as that had been a highlight we were looking forward to. The entrance we found into the property felt a little neglected—likely impacted by the high winds the day before—but it did set a slightly underwhelming tone. The exterior of the house looked tired and could really benefit from a freshen-up to match its heritage charm. On the upside, the café was open and provided a cosy refuge from the cool weather. It was lovely to warm up and regroup there. We wandered through parts of the garden, which had potential but didn’t quite deliver the wow factor on this occasion. Overall, our visit felt underwhelming, though we acknowledge this may not always be the case. With a bit of upkeep and clearer access, Como House could easily shine as the elegant destination it’s known to be.

If you just want to take a walk around, I think you don’t need to buy a ticket. Tickets are only required if you want to visit inside the house. Overall, the place is very well maintained. While I was there, I could easily imagine how the nobles used to live — the beautiful surroundings really made it easy to get lost in such wonderful daydreams.

Lovely Victorian era home set in pretty gardens. Got in for free on reciprocal arrangements with my English National Trust membership. Booked timed house tour on arrival, then explored the garden and enjoyed lunch at the excellent cafe whilst waiting for the informative house tour. Property can be reached by a pleasant hour's walk along the banks of the Yarra River from Melbourne's CBD, avoiding the complexities of the MYKI public transport system.

Como House and Garden is one of Melbourne’s most beautiful heritage treasures — a place that blends history, architecture, and natural beauty in a way that feels both inspiring and peaceful. Whether you’re visiting for a tour, a walk through the gardens, or one of the many special events held here, it’s an experience that always leaves an impression. The house itself is stunning. Built in the 1840s, it has been preserved with great care and offers a rare glimpse into Melbourne’s past. Guided tours are excellent — informative, engaging, and filled with fascinating stories about the families who lived here and the history of the estate. The interiors are elegant, with period furniture and details that bring the era vividly to life. The gardens are equally special. Expansive, beautifully maintained, and full of character, they’re the perfect place for a stroll, a picnic, or simply to sit and enjoy the tranquility. From the sweeping lawns to the shaded pathways and heritage plantings, it’s a space that feels both grand and intimate. Events at Como House and Garden are also a highlight. From markets and exhibitions to cultural festivals, there’s always something happening that brings the community together in this unique setting. It’s a venue that feels alive, not just a historic site frozen in time. The staff and volunteers deserve special mention — knowledgeable, passionate, and clearly dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the property. Their enthusiasm makes the experience even richer. Como House and Garden is more than just a historic site — it’s a place where history, culture, and nature meet. A must-visit for anyone in Melbourne, whether you’re a local or a tourist.

Outstanding place. It is well worth having a guided tour. The NT vollies are knowledgeable and do a wonderful job. The house has an amazing history of families who have lived there. There's toilets but no cafe, and you can visit the gardens for free

It was a beautiful place to take a walk around and visit. It was smaller than what I expected, but the garden behind the building was amazing. I didn't buy the ticket to tour inside.
