The Best Hotels in Bali, From Beach Bungalows to Cliffside Villas

"Because Bali is a tropical island, there's a misperception that it's all about beaches. Yet there’s little more dramatic than the magical tableau of Ubud's jungle scenes. At COMO Uma Ubud, coconut palms and banyan trees frame 46 rooms, suites, and villas, all designed by Koichiro Ikebuchi, offering an intimate, hyperlocal experience. At the heart of the resort is an 82-foot jade-green pool with rooms and eating areas staggered across the snug plot. Clever planning, fresh interior design, private courtyards, and infinity-edge plunge pools make the property feel modern—yet totally at home in Ubud." - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

COMO Uma Ubud

"Set the scene for us. What stands out to you as you arrive at this hotel?Because Bali is a tropical island, there's a misperception that it's all about beaches. Clever planning, fresh interior design, private courtyards, and infinity-edge plunge pools make the property feel modern—yet totally at home in Ubud. What's the vibe?"Uma" is Sanskrit for "home" or "house," and this hilltop resort overlooking the Tjampuhan Valley, the little sister to Como Shambhala Estate, does the residential vibe well. So what does that mean for the rooms and villas themselves? Each charming, light-filled villa has an outdoor courtyard sandwiched between living spaces, as well as stylish bathrooms with every amenity and modern convenience you can think of. What are the food options at the resort? Anything we should be sure to try?Uma Cucina serves pizzas and pastas. Kemiri, further into the property, does a gorgeous breakfast buffet and Indonesian food for dinner. You can also enjoy meals on the deck just above the Uma Pool Bar. After we've freshened up and refueled, what else should we be sure to check out on the property?Riffing on the spirit of COMO Shambhala, yoga and wellbeing is a huge focus here; an open-air pavilion hosts different sessions and therapies. Who else can we expect to see here?Younger couples and adventurous honeymooners. How about the surrounding area? What's the best way to explore the neighboring sights?Local hosts lead guided walks through rice fields and forests, and tours of temples, galleries, and museums. You can also visit the Ubud Market and browse silk sarongs, wicker handbags, and other hand-made accessories. Sounds delightful. If you could give this hotel a sort of tagline, what would it be?This is a tranquil boutique hotel in the spiritual heart of Bali." - Juliet Kinsman

Without a doubt, the staff make this hotel what it is. Every single person we met was polite, friendly and keen to make sure you were having a wonderful time. They provide some of the best service we have ever experienced. ||The food was exceptional too. I was nervous about Bali Belly, and whilst everyone raves about the restaurants in Ubud, I felt more comfortable eating at the hotel restaurants and enjoyed a range of meals over the 5 days we stayed. Again, the restaurant staff were wonderful and so attentive. ||Our family enjoyed using the gym which is brand new and well equipped, and the spa was heaven! We have never experienced treatments as good as these and the ladies in the spa were so welcoming. ||If we had one quibble, which we know isn’t the hotels fault, is that the rooms felt and smelt quite damp. There had been lots of rain during our stay so perhaps everything dries a bit once the sun appears. ||We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Como as a tranquil oasis amid the chaos of Ubud! Thank you for a fabulous stay and the wonderful staff will forever remain in our hearts.

Como Uma is absolutely fabulous hotel, where we had an amazing unforgettable marvelous stay. We stayed for 10 days which can seem long but in the end time flied so fast and we did not get bored at all. What makes this hotel so special is its staff. We can find classy amenities in many places but very rarely you get to be welcomed by so cordial and polite personnel. A very special “thank you” to Silvi at front desk, Feby at Como Shambala Spa, restaurant staff, tour guides and every single person for making our holidays extraordinary. I can go on with compliments for a very long time. To make a long story short: if I happen to be in Bali again, I know where I will stay.

The COMO is an incredibly beautiful resort that was perfect for our honeymoon. The staff is incredibly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. We booked a few excursions through the front desk (ATV and sunrise hike) and both were fantastic. It was so peaceful being able to start the day with complimentary, morning yoga, followed by breakfast. I also received a facial at the spa, which was also very relaxing. I would recommend going early to book your appointment as they fill up fast. We are looking forward to returning to the COMO Uma or visiting another COMO resort in the future.

We had a fantastic experience at Como Uma Ubud. The staff couldn't have been more attentive and friendly. They learned our names on the first day and were incredibly knowledgable of the food ingredients in support of my partners nut allergy. They went above and beyond and we cannot wait to visit more Como hotels in the future. We booked a trip with an external provider and the reception staff arranged a breakfast bundle which would be safe for my partner to eat whilst out on the trip with no nuts without us even asking for it! Yande, Made at breakfast, and Yari at the pool bar were fantastic and extra friendly. All the staff were just great. Thank you for a great stay.

Ok, where to start?||We stayed in Como Uma for our first destination in Indonesia, during our honeymoon trip. We have never experienced such a luxury, chill, top level service and experience.||The breakfast experience is probably one of the best meals we ever had, and the day would not begin without it. ||The staff is friendly and super careful. My wife is lactose intolerant, we let them aware during check-in and from that point on all of the staff in the hotel would proactively remind us that the food was properly prepared. We received consecutive treats for our honeymoon and included a belated birthday celebration for my wife.||We hired a one day tour to the temples with our guida Eva and he went beyond, became our private photographer and good friend, telling stories and sharing experiences. Unfortunately it rained a lot during the day, Eva was sacrificing himself to guarantee our confort. He also stopped in the local market to buy "ingredients" so we could prepare our personal offering and guided the prayers and chants for our thanks. He also guided me on my water purification ritual which was just so special, something I'll never forget.||Other than that, the facilities of the hotel are luxurious and very relaxing, rooms, pool, bar and restaurant. We did not love the food from the Uma Cucina restaurant, but all the others were phenomenal. ||We just ended our stay there hoping to go back in our 5th anniversary. Thank you Como Uma 🙏

Wanting to gatekeep this hidden gem but I think it’s worth it to give it a shout. Best luxury hotel in Ubud and not crazy expensive, food earned top marks for all meals, garden pool villa was pristinely spotless and bedding was exquisite. The landscaping throughout the hotel was well thought through and atmosphere was serene amidst the crazy Ubud traffic chaos. The entire team made us feel so at home and service was absolutely top notch and heartfelt. The front desk led by Dwi and Uma Bar staff were friendly and we always looked forward to our meals there. Massage at the COMO Shambhala was excellent and great value, at way lower price than other COMO hotels. One downside though, the hotel is situated in a natural environment with insects and lizards, sometimes even frogs but you would never be bothered by them. Highly recommend, a true gem in Ubud.

We had 4 nights in a Garden Villa at the Como Uma Ubud and it was absolutely wonderful. Such a peaceful and beautiful hotel outside the madness of Ubud town. The garden villa was stunning - really luxurious in the design of the space and the bed was really big, super comfy with crisp cool bedding - a 10/10 sleep. We had 2 Coy Carp in the pond in our villa - between the bedroom and bathroom and we found them so relaxing to have around.|The hotel was immaculate and the staff were really amazing - nothing was too much trouble.|The main pool was very comfortable and the staff at the pool bar were very attentive.|The new gym was very impressive, the restaurant where breakfast was served was in such a pretty setting - so much greenery, it felt so calm. The options for breakfast were amazing - especially the ginger and honey tea and black rice pudding pots.|The hotel offers a morning walk through the Paddy Fields with one of the staff and I would really recommend you go along - well worth experiencing.|Como Uma Ubud was perfect for 3 days of luxury R&R in the jungle!

I don’t normally write reviews unless I feel really compelled to. This is my second time here and they have knocked it out of the park yet again. Having tried multiple 5 star hotels in Bali, I won’t bother staying in any other hotel in Bali again. Service is impeccable. I do not understand how they have managed to train ALL staff to this level of professionalism and service but they have. The food in the main all day dining restaurant and breakfast is simply the best I’ve had in Bali, period. It is amazing that hotel food can be this good. Having tried various tasting menus in standalone restaurants, we have concluded that the food in the hotel is far superior. We ended up having all our meals back in the hotel. In room dining is delivered piping hot to your room in 15 minutes. 🤯 I am still dreaming about the daily breakfasts, which were the best I’ve ever had in my life. Do not hesitate to stay in Como Uma Ubud. I’ll be back, hopefully sooner than later!
