Compass House

"Set the scene for us: Where is this hotel, and what does it look like?Just off Kloof Road, in the exclusive suburb of Bantry Bay, this small luxury hotel (only eight rooms) has the look and feel of a grand beach villa. It’s a few doors down from Ellerman House, but on a much smaller scale and piece of land. On the sea-facing side of the house, an infinity lap pool (22 meters) merges with the blue horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, palm trees flutter gently in the light breeze—this is Bantry Bay where the wind rarely blows—and planters are filled with lavender and lush foliage. There are four double sun cabanas, conducive to spending all day by the pool. The entrance foyer opens out into a large, open-plan living and dining space, leading onto a patio with tables for dining, and a seating area. The rooms are on three levels, and each has a well-furnished balcony or terrace. So basically, it's Eden. What’s the crowd like?Couples young and old, soaking up the sun and the solitude, mainly from Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark, but also Americans. Alright, that's a nice mix. How was check-in? Were there any staff members who really charmed you on arrival?Antonio, one of the managers, was there to welcome and orient his guests, pour chilled glasses of Creation wine (from the Hemel en Aarde Valley, in Hermanus) for an impromptu sundowner at the pool with canapés, the sun sinking into the ocean through palm tree—like a tropical island, rather than Bantry Bay. The entire room operates on a central touch-screen pad, which is demonstrated to you on check-in. Streamlined. Give us all the welcome wine. Now, on to the good stuff: Tell us about your room. The top-floor Blue Suite has its own plunge pool (can be heated, if you prefer). Surveying the ocean from three floors up, you feel like the king of the castle. The decor is deceptively simple, but everything is of the highest quality. The white bed linen is imported Garnier Thiebaut. In the living room-cum-study, I loved the boxy Duvivier designer chairs, and the leather Campo Marzio accessories in Hermès orange. The bathroom is sleek and very modern with rain showers and a built-in dressing room, and Bulgari products. How about the little things, like the mini bar, or shower goodies? Anything that made your experience more comfortable? To start, there's free Wi-Fi and a smart TV, plus a touch screen pad that controls everything in the room, from music and lighting to AC/temperature. There were Bulgari toiletries in the bathrooms. The minibar includes mineral water, mini Champagne bottles, and soft drinks. In the suites, it’s included in the rate. Phew—this place is pretty stacked. How about room service, or on-site dining? Worth it?The Swiss owner is a perfectionist and everything in the kitchen is of the highest provenance, including the lovely Continental style breakfast buffet with a selection of local and imported cheeses and charcuterie, homemade Greek-style yogurt, various cereals, seasonal fruits, freshly baked pastries and breads, a dozen or more fruit preserves and wild honey. Eggs Florentine and other hot breakfast dishes are ordered from the kitchen, although in summer most guests stick to the Continental. For the rest, guests are invited to make themselves at home in the kitchen, helping themselves to tea, coffee, or drinks. There is always a chef in the kitchen to make snacks, a light meal or even just a sandwich. During the day, they’ll bring surprise cooling treats like watermelon in vodka or ice cream to guests poolside. We love an on-call chef. Speaking of which, was there any particular staff member who really impressed you?Antonio is a natural-born hotelier, having worked in grand five-star, full-service hotels in Europe before falling in love with Cape Town and bringing his personality and exacting eye for detail to this boutique property. A real career professional. Alright, we're nearing the end of our questions—but is there anything else you want to tell us about? The spa, below the pool, has just been refurbished and complimentary canapés and sundowners are served at sunset. There’s a shower room close to the pool, which is also handy for guests with late flight departures, to freshen up. The honesty bar includes all beverages, except for wine and Champagne. This means that all the artisanal local and imported gins are included, too, so you can conjure up the most amazing G&Ts on the house. Lovely! So, bottom line: worth it, and why?If you’d rather be staying in a private villa than a hotel, this is for you. Compass House combines the best of both worlds - it’s small and exclusive, yet run like a five-star hotel—in the prime Atlantic Ocean-view enclave of Bantry Bay." - Jane Broughton

My husband and I recently stayed at Compass House with his parents during part of our two week trip in South Africa. The hotel is beautifully styled, with unique art and furniture that compliment the amazing view of the ocean. I can easily say the staff here were by far the most attentive and dedicated staff we have ever experienced in all our travels. It is a small boutique hotel and the staff know each guest by name. They work so seamlessly together to coordinate turn down service of the room while you're at breakfast and then again while you're away at dinner. The rooms were kept spotless, with new towels and a sweet treat with water next to the beds. The view is spectacular and the location is great. The pool area and multiple self-serve honor bars are wonderful. They have a nice selection of canned beer and plenty of mixer options. They also have a selection of wines and daily afternoon cake. There was always a selection of coffee, tea and snacks in the lobby as well. We would happily stay here again on our next visit. The staffs attention to detail was absolutely unmatched and trult made our stay so special, relaxing and memorable.

We stayed here on our honeymoon and cant wait to come back and celebrate every anniversary back at Compass House.||The view, the service, the rooms and homely but yet elevated atmosphere leaves you speechless. We can not thank Johan & Gerhard enough for making us feel like we are family. ||We do not often review places but could not help but share this experience. ||They have great advise for hikes, restaurants and things to do in and around Cape Town. The breakfast is fantastic and fresh. The rooms are spacious and so tastefully decorated with such high end fittings and equipment. ||You have set the bar very high and hope to enjoy our next two weeks in Africa just as much.

We have just experienced a 6 night stay at this boutique hotel in Bantry Bay. What a find it was! We have stayed in many of the medium to large 5 star hotels in & around Cape Town & this is by far the best! It has a beautiful setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with a large pool area more spacious than you might expect for a small boutique hotel. The Managers Gerard & Johan provide exceptional, personal service where nothing is too much trouble & staff like Petty make you feel like you are the only guests in the hotel. Beautiful breakfast on the balcony with lots to choose from (try their special take on baked beans!). We had a lovely spacious room, again with a wonderful balcony with sea view. The hotel is well located to explore Cape Town & Camps Bay with a short taxi ride to both. If you are looking for a personal luxuruous experience & debating to go to a large 5 star hotel or something smaller & more boutique, book Compass House - its guaranteed not to disappoint!

We have just spent a couple of nights at Compass House and cannot recommend it enough. A stunning pool, fantastic views and an incredibly comfortable room all make for a great stay but it is the service that absolutely stands out. Gerard, Johan and the rest of the team make this place feel like home. The warmest of welcomes, an incredible breakfast and lots of small touches that show how much they have thought of everything. Nothing is too much trouble but nor are the team intrusive.||With only a handful of bedrooms, the place feels calm and peaceful. It is definitely boutique and may not be for people who like to be anonymous or who love places like the Four Seasons with multiple F&B offerings however if you need somewhere to relax with the most warm and generous staff Compass House cannot be recommend enough. Thank you for the most wonderful stay!

A great find, beautiful hotel with views across the bay. Lovely staff, super helpful and friendly. Wonderful breakfasts too! Rooms were well-appointed, nothing was too much trouble. Very helpful advice from staff about various things we wanted to do and how best to do them. A very special place.

Boutique hotel but the photos don’t really do it justice. That’s because you can’t take a photo of service levels that are higher than you could ever imagine. All staff have clearly been steeped in an ethos of friendly and personalised service, with nothing too much trouble. Gerhard and Johan are tremendous but you can tell that even the room cleaner is working to the highest and most discrete standards. ||The breakfast (included) is second to none, with lots of personal touches like home made yoghurt and an amazing array of house jams. The pool beds and the pool itself are heaven - tranquil, lovely view and tremendous help-yourself bar for teas, coffees and drinks. They think of everything.||Location is great too. high enough for a view of the sea but only 5 minutes down to the sea-front promenade for a great walk or run to remember. All the sights are within a short Uber ride.

What can I say? From the moment we arrived at Compass House, we knew we had made the right choice. We had booked it last minute for a couple of days before heading south to meet with friends, and it turned out to be an absolute gem. Our experience started with the warmest welcome from Johan, who greeted us with a chilled glass of bubbly as we checked in. Meanwhile, Felix kindly took care of our luggage and whisked it down to our room. The tone was set for a stay that would exceed every expectation. Since there was only two other guests staying at the property, we were delighted to be upgraded to a suite. This incredible gesture gave us our own private balcony with direct access to the pool—an absolute dream! Shortly after settling in, Gerard introduced himself and let us know he was there to help with anything we might need. It became clear that the entire team wasn’t just professional but genuinely passionate about ensuring our stay was perfect. They struck the perfect balance between being friendly and engaging without ever feeling intrusive. For two blissful days, we relaxed in this little slice of paradise where nothing was ever too much trouble. The team’s kindness, warmth, and attention to detail made us feel like family. Saying goodbye at check-out was genuinely emotional, with hugs and heartfelt goodbyes all around. In many years of traveling and staying at hotels around the world, I have never experienced a stay like this....Compass House is in a league of its own. If you’re reading this and debating whether to stay here, let me save you the trouble: book it. You won’t regret it, and I can’t wait for the opportunity to return.

Phenomenal. Utterly perfect from start to end, just wished we had managed to stay a bit longer. The staff were so attentive and accommodating - they really make this place. Beautiful breakfast, cakes and canapés. The pool was the stand out for me - so tranquil, luxury and stunning views. I can’t wait to recommend this boutique hotel to all my family and friends visiting the area. Will be back
