We came up with little to no expectations after receiving the hotel stay as a gift for our 13th anniversary. The prime reason for coming here was the observatory. We had absolutely no plans for anything other than that and planned to have a laid-back and restful time for our three-night stay.
Booking with our gift receipt required a phone call, and when I spoke with Carleen she said she wasn’t 100% sure how to do everything, but in a worst-case scenario things would work out when we came up. She was right.
Upon arrival, we found that the booking had been lost, but luckily there was no one staying there at the time and everything worked out. Going in April is apparently the absolute center of the off-season. There was no one in the hotel and, really, no one in town. When we asked what there is to do in the area for fun we were given blank stares, likely because it was in the off-season. This worked out for us because, as I mentioned before, we had no plans or expectations except relaxation.
When we asked about nearby food we were told pretty much only burgers. This turned out to be true because the only nearby eatery is the historic Shooting Star Saloon which only serves burgers. For other food, we went into Eden for groceries or restaurants.
To no one's fault, the skies were cloudy 2 of the 3 nights we were there, but once we got into the observatory it was fantastic. Scott is very friendly and kind and shares a lot of fun insights on the stars visible from Huntsville.
We also enjoyed the Ogden Valley Planet Tour, with the Sun being on the Compass Rose Lodges grounds. We were able to walk all the way to Mars, and we saw some of the other planets on our drives out to Eden. I wish we’d brought our bikes because there’s a great-looking bike trail that runs along the planet tour.
We spent some time at the local library that is a stones throw away, and watching a wedding at the Mercantile next door. We also walked through the cool Huntsville square and saw all the old-timey pioneer buildings and ski lift stuff.
A quick pros-cons breakdown:
Pros:
Small town vibe to the max
Friendly staff
Great observatory experience
Fun planet tour
Slick spot to throw up your feet and read a book
Cons:
The beds are crazy squeaky.
There is NO sound dampening in the rooms, and with no carpet, it’s extremely noticeable. Some cool decorative cloth items on the walls would help tremendously, or a rug in the entryway. We could hear the shower running and the cleaning people across the hall during the day.
There isn’t a map of the amenities that we saw. We didn’t know there was a water station or microwave until halfway through our second day when we decided to wander through the empty hotel for fun.
The breakfast sandwiches you get are great, but so greasy that we passed on them sometimes.
Ultimately, we felt that the price was quite a bit too high for off-season lodging. With sparse amenities and nothing but the observatory really going on in April, it should have been reduced. When we told them that we’d be there for three nights even the staff seemed surprised that anyone would vacation in Huntsville that long in the off-season, ha ha.
