Compston House B&B

This was our 1st Wedding Anniversary and we decided to book Ambleside through great reviews from friends. We stopped at Lake Windermere for a night on our way to Gretna Green last year and loved it. |This B&B caught my eye due to its great reviews especially about the breakfast choices which did not disappoint. |Our room was perfect, if I could make any suggestions it would have been nice to have a mini fridge. |The dog was friendly and very chilled. |Nothing was ever too much trouble and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. |We would return. |Karen and Bobby Pretlove

Just back from a group of friends staying in Ambleside whilst we competed in a trail race. |There were 12 of us and John and Megan were outstanding hosts. They couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. |Rooms were clean and ranged from ‘cosy’ to spacious. |Clean linen, towels and supplies topped up whenever requested outside of normal room servicing. |Special thanks to Megan for feeding 12 of us (plus other guests) with breakfast all at once with efficiency and a smile all the time. |Would definitely recommend and we’ve already booked for next year 😊|Oh and breakfast is brilliant.

Excellent B and B, very friendly owners, nothing is ever a problem. The rooms are very comfortable with a high standard of cleanliness with tea and coffee provided. Shower room fully equipped with fluffy towels and toiletries. Breakfast is all you could wish for and more. Free parking either with private space or a pass for local car parks. Definitely recommend a stay.

Another amazing stay at Compston House B&B. Lovely comfortable beds, beautiful spacious clean rooms, perfect location and the best breakfasts! Meg and John are great hosts and think of every little detail. Would recommend and will be back.

We stayed at Compston House in March 2025 for a weekend, which was a lovely, comfortable B&B. The room was small but prefect size for the two of us, with an ensuite bathroom that has been outfitted with modern facilities. The room had a double bed, wardrobe, dresser with kettle and coffee machine and a wall mounted TV.||The B&B did not have parking but at check in we were provided with a parking permit allowing us to park in some of the local car parks for free. But word of warning the two closest car parks get full and after a day out I had drive around them a few times until a spot opened up. There is a bigger car park about a 5 min walk away which was the back up choice. ||You had plenty of choice at breakfast and what we had both mornings was delicious and you can’t beat a home cooked breakfast. ||The owners were friendly and welcoming. ||Definitely recommend staying here if you venture to Ambleside for a few days.

Brilliant stay here. From start to finish we received 1st class service at all times and the breakfast is to die for. Room was spotless as usual and a very comfy bed. We will be back very soon. Potentially July. Thanks again Steve and Jill

Easily the best place to stay in Ambleside. The owners are beyond helpful and accommodating. The rooms are incredible and clean, the beds are cozy, the breakfast was a perfect start to the day, and is located in the center of everything. Bonus points for the sweetest German Shepard. 10/10 would live there forever.

We’ve stayed at Compston House many times, and it never fails to impress. John and Meg are fantastic hosts who who work incredibly hard and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. ||||We stayed in Room 8 (our go to room when available), which was spotless, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable. Plus you get a dedicated parking space with this room which is an added bonus. However every room gets a parking pass if not a dedicated parking space which is invaluable.||||The breakfast is the highlight of our stay - made with top-quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. The full American is amazing! 🤩 ||||A special mention has to go to Mia, their adorable and friendly dog, who is always on hand to greet you with a wagging tail. She’s the perfect addition to this warm and welcoming home.||||The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Ambleside. It’s a short stroll to numerous restaurants, bars, and shops, and it’s an ideal base for exploring the Lake District’s many scenic walks.||||Thank you, John and Meg, for another wonderful stay! This was one of the most friendly little B&B's we've stayed at in the Lake District. The minute you walk through the door you are greated by Jerry and Sue who are more than happy to help you out with local information, restaurant recommendations and bookings etc. The B&B is perfectly located in the centre of Ambleside so it's easy to stroll to one of the many pubs or restaurants. The rooms are all themed on different parts of America and the rest of the B&B is imaculate. The breakfasts are one of the main attractions to this B&B and now I know why. You can choose between a full American, a full English or any mixed breakfast, pancakes, omlettes you name it. So much choice and so much food you'll struggle to leave the table and Jerry will keep offering you more. Sue does a cracking job in the kitchen and no matter how busy it is the breakfast is at the highest standard. The only thing that lets this place down is the bathroom in our room was very small but to be fair it did it's job so I wasn't too bothered. I would definatly recommend this place to anyone.
