On the Grid : Mermaid Parade

"The Mermaid Parade is an annual New York tradition that attracts thousands of spectators and participating sea creatures of every nature. The parade is produced by Coney Island USA, an arts organization devoted to “preserving the dignity of American popular culture.” See photos below." - work x work

On the Grid : Coney Island Museum

"Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, this unusual and awesome museum offers a peak into the area's history with a heaping of nostalgia. The permanent collection includes everything from funhouse mirrors and vintage bumper cars, to old postcards, photographs and modern works inspired by the past. Coney Island USA’s artist-in-residence, Marie Roberts, is the only traditional banner painter working in the area and her private studio is based upstairs in the museum building." - work x work

My family got to see all the preserved artifacts of Coney Island and carnival history in the upstairs museum (pieces from original rides over 100 years old!) and also experience it live in person at the sideshow performance on the main stage (stunning, fiery and funny, with that old-timey charm of "I bet I can get one more dollar from you before you leave"). Stopped for sodas and beers in the on-site Freak Bar on the way out to talk about what our favorite parts were. Coney Island USA is a true American treasure!

We loved the little taste of history in the museum. The gift shop had great art, t-shirts, books... and everyone LOVED the side show! Still so cool and campy.

My son and I come here every year, and we are never disappointed. As someone who used to come to Coney Island as a kid, Its great seeing the history of the area. Its a shame that gentrification is trying to push the local hotspots out of the area. See the museum and side show while you can.

Performances were amazing although a little disturbing...but I loved it!

A wonderful and magical place full of pop cultural relevance. The pictures, details and signs on display at the Coney Island Museum are fantastic, the service and staff are unique, and even the toilets are impressive. I don't usually watch films shown on museum screens, but the short films shown at the Coney Island Museum immediately captivated me and added to the atmosphere. It is quirkey, creative, inspiring and gripping. The museum pays so much respect and tribute to Coney Island as a place that it truly is recommended to anyone who enjoys this fabulous locality. It's an absolute disgrace that Coney Island will apparently soon fall victim to a casino. Coney Island is a New York City landmark, far removed from pompous tourist hotspots, with a lot of heart and a great American style with high artistic value.

We had a great time Sunday at the Magic show. Everyone should go!! This was 2 hours of live entertainment in NYC for $10. $5 for kids. We have been many times to the side show as well. Always a great visit. Thanks for preserving a bit of the old/real Coney Island vibe.

Iconic Americana! It was fun and the beach was clean, the water calm. The boardwalk is straight out of a movie. Worth a visit to see a piece of American history. But be careful - the surrounding area isn’t what you would think. Lots of car repair shops and other industrious type of businesses. Not somewhere you want to walk around.

Yelp
Coney Island U. S. A. is a really fun place to spend the day. My visits are many over the years. I always enjoy hanging around taking photos of the pier and beach. Coney Island is more than just the beach and the amusement park. There's sports venues, music concerts, dining and more. I like the beach and pier area of Coney Island early in the morning. Then I wander around the other locations. I enjoy the community gardens planted by the residents. The amusement park is historic. I must admit I would not want to live in this neighborhood. You need to be a true blue beach person. The people traffic in the summer must get hectic. The place is kept clean, people are friendly and I love the architecture. I don't go when it is too warm. I don't find many trees to sit under. There were plenty of benches to relax. I always get a Nathan's Hot Dog! If you haven't been, you should go at least one time. Bring lots of cash and credit cards! Bring the whole family. Maybe bring a gang to drink beer. But always get a Nathan's Hot Dog, or two!

Yelp
I lived here for many years and still visit every now and then. This beach has one of the best vibes in Brooklyn! It's always busy and jam-packed, especially during the warmer months. There are tons of fun activities to engage in, or you can just relax. The area is filled with restaurants to dine in or order from. It's a really cool spot, though it has become expensive with all the changes happening in the country. However, you're guaranteed a great time with or without money to spend! The beach and boardwalk are nice, although people could do better about not littering the sand area. There is always visible police presence. I love this place.

Yelp
I wanted to take a drive to get some fresh air. What better place than to go to Coney Island. There were a few people out enjoying themselves. The weather was nice and l wanted a hot dog and fries from Nathans. There were lots of kids and baby strollers on the boardwalk. Also plenty of tourists taking pictures.. The arcades were full, people were on line to go on the roller coaster and taking their chances of winning big teddy bears and prizes. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, even me as l stuffed my face with my Nathans hotdog, fries and rootbeer.

Yelp
What more could you ask for. The beach, beers at Ruby's, which btw has the best jute box. Ride the Cyclone, Spook A Rama and the Wonder Wheel. Nicest people working security. It's a win win.

Yelp
So NY so Brooklyn!! so real.. I will never forget Coney Island.. Home of the first Nathans and wear the Orange Juilius was invented.. I used to ride my bike from Flatbush to Coney Island when I was a kid just to get a Nathan's hot dog.. When I was a kid there was a funhouse there along with a lot of cool rides.. the boardwalk and under the boadwalk... oh how I miss those great days!!
