12 Bewildering Hills Where Gravity Seems to Work in Reverse

"It has been suggested that instead of calling “images that differ from objective reality” optical illusions, they should instead be called “brain fails,” which is in effect, exactly what they are. One can experience this strange, and rather delightful, sense of brain failure at California’s appropriately named “Confusion Hill,” one of a number of mystery spots and gravity hills which dot the West Coast. However, because Confusion Hill is a self-guided tour, rather than the tightly controlled tours at other mystery spots, you have the opportunity to explore the forced perspective, Ames room illusion to the fullest. Among the illusions are rolling a golf ball out the window and having it come back to you, standing on the walls, and a gravity chair, which is easy to get into and difficult to get out of. The other attractions on Confusion Hill, are appropriately confusing, and include a “Redwood Shoehouse” which was used as a float in a 1947 parade, and has been on the hill since 1949 when Confusion Hill was originally built. It also boasts the largest freestanding Redwood Chainsaw Carving at over 40 feet tall, and a mountain train ride on a 20 gauge track. Unfortunately, though Confusion Hill is located amid a redwood forest, much of the forest has been logged leading one commentator to say that it looked like “a nuclear bomb decimated the redwood forests.”" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Visually interesting, but not worth the price This location looked fun and active in the photos, but in reality, it felt a bit underwhelming — especially for the price. We paid $18 for four people, and the main attraction was just one tilted room with an optical illusion. The train wasn’t operating during our visit. The area is cute overall — there’s a picnic zone, a fun little gift shop with souvenirs, and a few quirky wooden sculptures. You’ll also find old-timey fortune-telling machines, a mini playground for kids, and historic photos to browse. But all of this is only accessible after paying the entrance fee. The illusion room itself felt quite worn out and could really use some maintenance. The incline leading into it is already disorienting — we started losing balance before even stepping inside. It felt a bit unsafe, especially for kids or older visitors. They also offer hot dogs and snacks on site, but again — overpriced for what you get. Overall, it’s visually charming and has some fun details to explore, but in my opinion, the experience doesn’t justify the entry fee. Worth a quick stop if you’re curious, but keep your expectations realistic.

Google
I love it. You have to come here, one of the premier roadside attractions. The gravity house cannot be missed it is incredible. Forgetting the twin towers trees are a sight to be seen, as well as the train ride which is so fun. You won't regret going to this really cool spot, and get a snack at the shack while you're there. I bet it would have been so awesome before that kid chopped all the trees up the hill and sold them, what a huge mistake. But the trees that remain are just incredible. Enjoy the chipalopes.

Google
Cute and a good place to let kids run around. The inspiration for the Gravity Falls show. It has a small playground and a rock stacking out. And of course the gravity house. There are restrooms but treat them on the same level as the kind on a campground etc. It's a bit run down but the staff are very friendly. Nice little souvenir shop with one or two gravity falls things. A few posters and books. We never saw or heard anything about a train but we were coming in close to closing on a Monday.

Google
Me and my son had a blast, and he played in the house for about an hour, both times we went. It was very cool. We really loved how gravity falls was based on this place and made a cool camping 🏕 theme.

Google
Inspiration for Gravity Falls, so obviously had to stop. I loved it! A few things were under construction so I didn't get to see everything but the owner (i think?) Came out and helped us figure out how to do a few of them. Fun!

Google
MAY 2025 - it was a fun, kitchy roadside attraction and for $5 per person, you can't beat it. This is a "house" built on a hill that you walk thru at your leisure. Train is no longer running to my knowledge. Gift shop is full of fun and silly souvenirs. Grounds are cute to explore and there is a fun kids section for them to play. If you want a fun break from a road trip, hop off the road and catch this attraction.

Google
My son and I drove from northern Washington (696 miles), just to see Confusion Hill. The inspiration for the Mystery Shack from Gravity Falls. It did not disappoint. The shop was great, the owner was awesome and the gravity house actually made me queasy 😵‍💫. Owner told us all about the other fans that have made their way there and even the Gravity Falls creator. Northern California on the 101 is a truly magical place. We even brought our own (GF) gift for the owner. A great old school tourist trap waiting for you to visit! Please make the trip!

Google
Interesting place to visit, the tilt house was pretty cool. The gift shop was neat. A nice little "stop on the way" place.

Yelp
If you're a super fan of the Gravity Falls show on Disney+ or just a fan of fun roadside tourist traps, I have two words for you: worth it! I visited Confusion Hill in mid-June and arrived around 1pm. It wasn't crowded at all and we were able to explore freely, walk around the property thoroughly and even have a decent (but pricey) lunch on site. If you take it slow and pay attention to the details of the place you'll discover there's much to see and appreciate. I'll add some photos but not much so as not to steal the splendor of this place!

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp when planning our road trip to Nor-Cal. We only stopped here because my kids are huge Gravity Falls fans. We read this place was the inspiration for the Mystery Shack. So glad we stopped, after 10 hours in the car this was our first roadside attraction and it was so much fun. It was cheap to walk through and take advantage of the gravity spots and fun facts. I would definitely come back!

Yelp
Stopped here on my way home, as a huge fan of Gravity Falls who thought she was too late for the Gravity Falls stuff, I was plesantly surprised when I pulled into the parking lot and saw the big Bill on the tree and all the merchindise in the gift shop! Especially the stuff made from redwood!! The man who ran the gift shop was totally friendly and welcoming. Also, the whole Chipalope thing is so stinking adorable!!

Jamie W.

Yelp
I was excited to go back again and experience this with friends. to say disappointing would be an understatement. train wasn't running and the sob story about maintenance was unnecessary, still had to pay full fee to get in and there was no warning ahead of time that it wasn't running. maintenance and upkeep was beyond depressing. clerk that was there was slurping coffee and playing on his phone instead of cleaning or improving the run-down facilities. drove a long way for disappointment

Yelp
Interesting roadside stop. Similar to The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. Nothing unique in the gift shop, just the same cheap made in China junk you see at all the other tourist traps. Nothing locally made at all. The gravity house was okay, but without an actual tour guide, you don't know what you're looking at or what to do. Not overly friendly staff. The train wasn't running due to recent rains and that was what my daughter really wanted to ride on. Maybe in the summer it's different. We probably won't ever be back to find out.

Yelp
We came here as a group of 10 people, 6 kids ages 13 and under and 4 adults. The lady at the front desk seemed very annoyed that the kids were looking around her shop to the point where she even made a rude comment about it. You have to go through the gift shop to get to the attraction, so there was no way we could avoid the kids looking through the shop. It felt very uncomfortable, especially for a place that was tailored towards Gravity Falls, which is a kid show. The train wasn't working, so we paid $5 for adults and $4 for the kids just to walk around in the woods basically which we could have done at any of the other parks or trails around here. Definitely wouldn't plan your trip around this place. I would suggest the Sequoia Sky Park zoo instead or even the Lady Bird Johnson Grove trail.

Yelp
My daughter is a huge Gravity Falls fan & she absolutely loved this place! We took a road trip here & the drive was beautiful! Will def have to come back again!

Yelp
Honestly, their politics ruined everything. The house itself is kind of mild, you need 2 people for a lot of the exhibits to work or a compass. They claim a stream is flowing backwards but it's hard to understand what they mean by that. Anyways, classic tacky highway pit stop with fake quartz "healing crystals" packets, appropriative cheap dream catchers next to a "don't tread on me" license plate. I regret giving this business my money, and I know there's other confusion hills out there- I've seen signs on the highways in Michigan. Maybe those ones aren't political.

Yelp
We were on a mission to locate the ever so hard to catch chipalope and we were successful! After driving the Avenue of the giants, we were on the lookout for confusion Hill. Did we go to see all the different displays? No we were there to purchase or sell for real live Chipolope! Great roadside attraction. We love the local kitchy stuff!

Yelp
It Just wasn't what we thought it was. The gift shop was drab, the attraction looked fake, and there was no food around anywhere near this place.

Yelp
Great stop to explore when you pass through. They have a gift shop, food, and things to sightsee. We took the plunge and purchased tickets for the train ride and gravity house. Yes, it was a bit pricey ($10 per adult for train & $5 per adult for gravity house) but we had such a fun time that it was well worth it. We really enjoyed the train conductor. He was hilarious and has a great personality. Definitely stop and enjoy this gem.

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars I definitely would . We pulled over to grab some souvenirs and possibly ride the train. Walked inside and immediately we were yelled at by the rude ass employee who said we don't allow dogs!! Mind you there were no signs posted and Scarlett was in my uncles arms. I tried to inform this man that she is my uncles service dog. He is a Vietnam vet and is 74 yrs old. This man then proceeded to tell me impersonating a service dog is a federal offense . So not only was he rude ,he insulted and offend my uncle by insinuating we were lying. All and all it was just a terrible experience and I will not come back !!!!

Yelp
This charming and classic, roadside attraction is timeless. Standing since after WW2, this place stands the test of time. The vintage and antique signs and statues are so charming and nostalgic. It's a world warp when entering the actual gravity house. It will make you bust up laughing and feeling disoriented. I wanted to take the mini train ride but it was wet weather and seemed like a slow day, the snack shack was closed too, so I didn't bother asking about the train. I plan on going back for sure and I will call ahead to see if the train is running that Day. The gift shop had lots of eye candy and awesome things to buy. I appreciate that the owners still got it operating and taken care of. This is a special and magical place.

Yelp
On my way to my destination during my four hour drive I came across a sign that I couldn't ignore. I was intrigued but still didn't bother to search what it was because I was driving assuming I wouldn't have enough time to check out any places. Upon my arrival to my destination I realized that I would have time to explore. I began asking what are "cool" spots I have to see before I leave. I created a list and this place came up quite often. I checked out the business and upon arrival there was a good size parking lot and no parking fee. There is a snackbar on site as well as a gift shop. I purchased a nice bracelet that reads "live the life you imagined." We purchased our tickets at the gift shop. Although they are normally open 7 Days a week, 365 days a year summer hours for now according to their hours are "Summer Hours: May-September 9th 9am-6pm *NOW HOWEVER, HOURS ARE 9-5PM*" The fee to enter is very cheap only $5.00 for adults, and for children 4-12 years old it is $4.00 and anyone under 4 is free. My favorite part of this location is the train ride with Tony the conductor. The cost for adults is $10, Children 4 - 12 years old: $7.50, and children 3 years old & under: Free. ***** All this information can be found on the website. When we exited the gift shop we walked to the gravity house which was not very far. The gravity house was very interesting and a fun experience. I took a couple of photos but none that I felt could capture the experience. We paid additionally for the train ride not really knowing what to expect. Tony the train drive was very entertaining, polite, and knowledgeable. Our group truly enjoyed his personality. He made this whole experience be a fun time for us. I highly recommend the train ride please do not skip it. The train runs on schedule so if you do plan a visit make sure to call and ensure you'll be there before it departs. The train can accommodate one person per seat and there are about 10 or so spots. Everyone kept and wore a mask during my visit. I found that this activity is family friendly because they have a playground for children but I also found adults enjoying their time here. I highly recommend stopping by this place because the prices are low, reasonable, and the experience from the train ride makes the trip worthwhile.

Yelp
Worth the visit if you are in the area. Same as the mystery spot in Santa Cruz. We came on a not so busy wed afternoon. My wife and I plus a 5yr old and 1yr old costed us total of 40 some dollars to do both the train ride and the mystery house. Tony the train conductor was the highlight, some might find him annoying but we liked his tour. Very funny, tho some jokes might fall flat but overall he is very entertaining. We learned a lot about the redwoods and history around the area. The little gift shop is great to see and there is a play area for the kids after the train ride. Clean bathrooms and plenty other things to explore on the property. All the latest info are on their website.

Corrine N.

Yelp
There website says "Dog friendly" this place is NOT. We drove all the way out there with our SERVICE dog and she denied us entry and said she's allergic to "pet dander" when the place was filthy. We asked why the website says "pet friendly" and her response was "we're dog friendly only outside in the front parking lot" excuse me? Don't recommend. My kids did go inside and looked around and it was nothing special. Not worth going out of your way for. I would also recommend changing dog friendly to NOT.

John Q.

Yelp
We walked in to the gift shop and were really confused because no one was behind the counter. Turns out the employee was on her smoke break out on the patio. She came in seemingly annoyed. My dad asked if they had a military discount to which she responded "we charge double for military." She was just so rude and disrespectful to a veteran and customers in general. It was awkward and just overall a very uncomfortable experience. After we paid for a visit to the gravity house, she went back out to finish her cigarette. So professional.

Yelp
Great rest stop, especially for families. After a long drive it's the perfect place to get out and stretch your legs... and your brain :) They have some really neat wood carvings, a few mind-bending attractions, a little playground, and a gift shop. It isn't really somewhere you could spend a whole day, but definitely worth a stop if you're passing through.

Yelp
Perhaps because not everything was open (train) and things were kinda run down, but $18 for our family of 4 to go felt steep. However, we ended up enjoying ourselves and got some puzzling laughs. The perception tricks were very neat in the gravity house. The "trail" was confusing...but it's Confusion Hill so ‍. Nice to stop at once and stretch our legs, but not sure we will stop again. (My son would LOVE the train, though.)

Yelp
I'm the type that's into freaky stuff. Oh please... Horror stuff, supernatural, weird things... Gravity House is as weird as it can get! My body felt so weird being in Gravity House. Yes, confused would be a good word to describe it too. There are a lot of theories about Confusion Hill. The most common theory is that a meteorite, large mineral deposit, or lodestone exists deep in the mountain to cause this effect. My friends and I think it's an optical illusion. It's the way the house was built, uneven and slanted to give you a weird feeling. Whatever it is, this mystery spot is worth checking out. With yelp check-in it's free for kids (I did not have signal here. I have AT&T) $5 for adults- 13 years old and up $3 for kids Located on route 101, northbound before you hit Humbolt County. If going on a roadtrip, I highly suggest stopping here for some random roadside fun.

Yelp
Five years after my first visit I made it back here and thankfully it was during regular business hours (which they've extended). We thought we were going to miss it after visiting the Chandelier Drive Thru Tree (a car was stuck IN the tree and it took forever to get through ourselves!) but thankfully, yelp hours were wrong and we had an extra hour before closing time. Confusion Hill is definitely a neat stop! It's fun to walk around, there's a great gift shop, and you can even buy chipmunk food and feed the little critters running around. You can walk through at your own pace so take your time and enjoy all the fun spots they've set up. If you're there early enough there's a little train ride you can take too. Bring your camera!

Yelp
While passing by my daughter wanted to stop here! This place reminds me of the mystery spot in Santa Cruz. It's super cheesy but makes for a good time. The lady working was very nice! I think $5 price is reasonable. We only went into the house I think the train is only open in the summer. I'm still confused lol is there really a gravity thing or is the house just slanted? Sit in the chair and try to get up without your hands... super funny! All in all it's worth a quick stop if you have time!

Yelp
The worst $45 I ever spent on my family. I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe a little less bickering between employees? Maybe some entertainment for my money? Maybe I was just expecting a little effort, but whatever it was I didn't get it. I think they really stopped trying somewhere in the 90's. Now they're just going through the motions. Lots of signs saying things like "put the bottle here" but there's no bottle, no golf ball. Our kids did enjoy the little playground even if they hated the train ride.

Yelp
A northern California landmark on the 101 north outside of Piercy, CA, just before the Humboldt county line sits confusion hill. An area of winding switch back road that weaves and passes its way through the redwood curtain in some of the most beautiful land on this continent, and where you will find this unique place A magnificent groove of old growth redwoods hosts this eclectic road side stop - a rest area, food and drink store, curiosity souvenir shop, museum-information center, gravity house, mini train, picnic, take a picture with the kids - cool place. Well worth pulling off the road for a bit, we try to stop either going or returning from the city when we have the time. At least once a year - for decades now. They have pretty decent food, great made to order burgers, etc. and the picnic area is shaded with tables and benches. The gravity house is a lot of fun but the climb up to it may be a little difficult for some. Confusion Hill is one of those rare places that makes northern California that cooler eclectic kind of laid back place that it is... 4stars 00093

Yelp
It's a mystery spot at Confusion Hill. Fun little place to stretch your legs on a road trip. Fun plays on gravity and perception. Very nice store clerk inside a cool little shop that has some cool gifts and wood carvings vibes of all types. Definitely worth the stop...

Yelp
We were playing tourist for the day and decided to stop at this place. It has a snack bar and a kitschy gift shop including the elusive stuffed chipalope. Which you find out about on the train ride. That leads me to the train ride. The guy running the train is hilarious and quirky but in the best way. It's about a 15-20 minute train ride that he stops to give information about the history of the property. There's a playground and picnic tables that you can bring your own food to sit down and relax under the big and beautiful redwoods. My only two complaints is one if you go during the summer be prepared for it to be warm. And since the folks there can't control the weather I really have only one complaint. The confusion house really messed with my head and I have had vertigo in the past so I had to leave the house. They do have a sign at the front that I missed after the fact. Maybe make the sign just a scoch bigger so dumdums like me can see it. Other than that, I say it's a cool place to stop and explore. The redwoods alone are worth it.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way home from our camping trip. I came here as a kid so I wanted to share the experience with my kids. Unfortunately, it ended up being a very bad decision. While getting out of the car, I saw one of the ladies who was working the food house let out a huge sigh. It was very busy and someone dropped the tip jar on the floor. I felt bad for her. It's over 100 degrees and people are rude. Because I saw that, I tried to be extra nice to her while we ordered our smoothies. After she took our order, she asked for my name and I gave it to her but I also started spelling it out of habit. She scoffed and made a rude comment about this "not being a spelling bee". I was shocked but I chose not to take it personally. It's hot and she'd been dealing with people all day. I even tried to change the tone by giving her all of my change back as a tip! Anyway, they ended up being out of a flavor we ordered, so she called me over to tell me and I could feel tension between her and the other lady she was working with. As carefully as I could so as not to add to the tension, I told her that we could just pick a different flavor and we aren't picky. She replied, "Well you're the first all day! I'm tired of being yelled at by everybody!" (She was motioning to the other lady who I later found out was the owner.) Well, it turned out our order was also taken incorrectly. We ordered 2 Mango, 1 Strawberry, but they had it backwards. We picked a replacement for the Strawberry we ordered and I asked, "We have one more mango coming, right?" The owner checked our receipt and I could see the order was wrong but I didn't want the other lady to get in trouble so I said, "Well maybe I said it wrong, I'm sorry." (Even though I know I didn't.) Well, the lady who took out order scoffed under her breath and said something in a mocking tone with her head bobbling, but all I heard was the last part, "I read back your order!" I let that go, too. After finishing our smoothies, my toddler had to use the restroom but there was a long line and she can't hold it that long so I took her to the car to use our portable potty. As we headed out, bad mood lady was heading in and held the door open for us, so I thanked her but she replied, "Not my pleasure!" And ran inside. I was shocked. I was trying so hard to be nice to her and to blame her behavior on a combination of the heat and a bad day but that was the final straw. She came out to her car a minute later and as she passed by I said, "You know, most people say 'you're welcome' instead of being rude!" but she avoided looking at me. I went straight into the gift shop to talk to the very nice couple working the register. I told the man about all the rude things the lady said to me. I asked if there was a supervisor and he told me the other lady working with her is the owner and she had already asked her to leave. He listened to everything I said and apologized to me, and honestly that made me feel better so I thanked him for listening and headed out back to meet my family so we could finally check out The Gravity House. Well, two minutes later bad mood lady come out back and mockingly yelled out, "You're welcome! You're welcome! You're welcome!" I looked at my husband, who was just as shocked, and said, "That's it." I marched back in and went directly to the owner. I started to tell her what happened and she interrupted me! "No, she didn't do that!" she even tried to tell me that she was just talking to herself! I gave very specific examples of the things she said but the owner kept shaking her head. Then, bad mood lady walked in and had the nerve to put her hand on her chest and exclaim in the most dramatic tone, "Who? ME? I would never do that!" You could have heard how hard my jaw hit the ground. I looked at her in disbelief and said, "You were literally just mocking me outside not more than five minutes ago!" She and the owner just kept shaking their heads. I was livid. I ran out to the back and called my family in and told them we were going to leave. There was no way I was going to give my money to this woman! The two angels working the register very patiently listened as I explained what happened and asked for a refund. The owner came over and heard me telling them what had happened and asked, "Well what am I supposed to do? Apologize for her?" YES. Yes, you need to apologize for her. You are the owner and your employee is out of line. At the very least you need to listen to the customer and not deny what they're saying! If she would have just said, "I'm sorry, I will talk to her." --that would have been enough! We would have stayed. Unfortunately, she did not make even the slightest effort to acknowledge or fix what happened. Not a good way to run a business! I really hope she reads this and learns from it. In the mean time, however, my family will not be visiting this place and we will make sure to warn others to AVOID the two women working the food house.

Yelp
Mixed reviews about this place: I have been to mystery spot in Santa Cruz which is the same exact attraction but way different atmosphere. This shop is owned by a couple and the husbands brother who live next door to the gift shop. They close promptly at 6 and make sure all are aware of that. The wife still runs the gift shop and they have an employee who works in the snack shop. I tried the fish and chips, my sister got the chicken strips and fries, my grandma ordered the chicken burger and my dad got hot dog with fries. The fish was ok but I stopped eating it after 1 piece. My sisters chicken strips and the chicken burger were great. There's no way you can mess up a hot dog so no complaints from my dad. They also sell milkshakes, soda and some candies and chips. Other than that there's old candy being sold in the gift shop. The gift shop seemed to be stuffed with items from gift shops all over California. They have stuff stacked up to the walls from the past years and have it overpriced. If you want anything from this gift shop I recommend wait until you get into the redwoods before purchasing because you will most likely find it at another gift shop unless you want the confusion hill sticker. The admission fee into the house was $5. It was the exact same as mystery house in Santa Cruz and fun on your first visit but once you realize your on a hill, where they made everything slanted and trick your mind you may not be as entertained. You can always pull in during open hours and walk around the gift shop, parking lot with the shoe house and just take pictures.

Yelp
I used to pass this every other weekend as a kid, when I would get to go to my grandma's house nearby. We stopped all the time, it's part of my childhood. So when a certain show came out, I saw one episode and knew exactly where that shack was. People told me, no - it's in Oregon, but they insisted the same thing about the Paul Bunyan statue, and no that's not either. So on my way down to Ukiah last weekend, my friend and I decided to stop by. He'd never been there before and I wanted his opinion on whether or not the layout of the property looked like a certain shack. We saw something the instant we got into the parking lot that confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt, we'd found the inspiration for the MS. It gave me the biggest happy for the rest of the weekend! I was bouncing in the car the rest of our drive. I'm so pleased with how well maintained the gift shop is, it looks recently painted. The outside exhibit area needs a little fixing. I'm not really sure if they should update the audio tour - on one hand it was totally broken, but on the other that kind of gives it this creepy vintage feel, and made us laugh because I could totally see Stan leaving a broken, motion detected recording out there. We went to stand on one of the footprint things, and suddenly this quiet, crackling 1940's radio voice drifted down from a speaker and we both lost it laughing. I don't think $5 per person for the gravity house is expensive; you're not paying for top rate modern entertainment; you're paying to help upkeep a piece of Northern California "Southern Oregon" weirdness. I'm glad this piece of my childhood is still here.

Yelp
Fun little piece of Americana. It's not Disneyland, but it's so great that this kind of historic roadside attraction is being kept alive. Definitely worth a stop! Also, the gift shop lady is so friendly.

Yelp
I've been to Confusion Hill twice and both times I've had a pretty good time. It's a big tourist trap!! There are various signs about confusion hill along Hwy 101. After so many signs I wanted to see what it was all about. It's $5 to go into the house and you have to go into the gift shop and pay $5. From there they have walk out he backside of the gift shop and walk towards the back to get into the house. My first time there we stopped by during the winter so it was a lot more fun since we were the only ones there. In June, we stopped by and there were 2 other people in the house with us and a lot more people in the small gift shop they have. It's a fun place to go, but it's only once of those places you go once then never again. The second time I went i didn't have as much fun. The house also needs to get refurbished and cleaned up a bit. I also never did the train ride because it didn't really interest me.

Yelp
Was excited to see what this place had to offer and stretch from the car ride. Was not inside the store for more then five minutes before the creepy guy behind the counter became rude and acted like a jerk. The items in the store are collecting dusk, I'm sure because the prices are extremely high. We promptly left because of how we were treated as I would not spend one dime of my money there.

Yelp
On our way up to Klamath to see the sequoia trees from Vacaville and stopped here for a stretch. Great little place to stop, walk around, see the odd confusion hill house and maybe get a bite to eat. A bit old, used and run down but otherwise an interesting place to see. Definitely worth a visit. Kids loves the crooked house and oddities. The gift shop was nice as well, with lots of little trinkets. There are some large sequoias on the property too.

Yelp
Finally, after years of driving past it, on our last trip up north we dropped into Confusion Hill for a short break and to assuage our curiosity. Walking in the door we received really friendly upbeat service and after checking out the nick knacks (wooden boxes, dream catchers, gold dipped pine cone earrings) we were invited (for a small fee) to check out the Confusion part of Confusion Hill. While I must say that five dollars isn't much in the scheme of things and its an excuse to stretch your legs and "hike" a tad bit, Confusion Hill is nothing to write home about. It's fun to say you saw it once, but not really worth the stop if you have somewhere to be. The highlight of our stop was the printing block in back. For something like a dollar you can type any saying or words you want on a silver dollar sized silver disc. While ours came out slightly misspelled it was a great one of a kind memento which we shared some laughs over. It was the best part of the entire trip!

Yelp
The Chipalopes tale Once upon a time when the Redwood forest here was still very young, buffalo still roamed while the deer, and antelope played. Something very confusing happened at Confusion Hill! Some might call it magic, others might call it a miracle, and still others would consider it a possible alien experiment with life forms here on Earth. No one knows if such a thing had ever happened before or since because there was no one around at the time to witness it!! Happened to pass by on the way to Eureka, the real NorCal. Decided to give it a whirl and check out the hill... neat, they have a place just like this at Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA. The redwoods are beautiful and its sad to see a lot of them... most of them have been cut down. Yes MOST OF THEM ARE CUT DOWN, but they purposely leave the ones near the highway uncut so people are not aware of what is happening. From an aerial view it would seem like a nuclear bomb decimated the redwood forests.

Yelp
Such a great throwback to another era of auto travel and roadside attractions. Not many left and Confusion Hill is hanging on despite being bypassed a bit by the new Highway 101 alignment. If you're looking for shiny, glitzy, LED flashy, San Francisco style attractions this ain't the place for you. Granted the place is getting a bit rough around the edges but it is run by salt of the earth people doing what they can to keep this living museum of roadside kitsch open and available for fun. In fact maybe consider part the entry and train fees as donations to help keep it going... Stay a bit, poke around there is something hiding to amuse or entertain just about everywhere and many at no cost at all!! Don't miss Doug's Dog House for a snack or lunch... the other day when we were there it was open and the burgers were spot on!

Yelp
Fun, quirky spot that has a train ride conducted by quite a character! The shop keeper is very personable as well. Tell you lots of fun tidbits about the shop and attraction. Gifts are moderately priced, but I think it's worth it to keep a venue like this in existence. The train conductor had a colorful personality, including a colorfully covered canvas on his person with Americana Television Show themed tattoos. He speaks like Quick Draw McGraw and has a super funny mannerism about how talks about the trail, historic equipment and life. The gravity House is really cool too! You feel totally off balance when you go in. It's similar to Santa Cruz's Mystery Spot but it has all its own charm and history that makes it very different. Cool tidbit, the Show Gravity Falls was partially modeled over this location. They have a snack shack, with nice mellow staff that takes their sweet time- teaching us all to slow the heck down. Try the Raspberry Shake, it's pretty good.

Yelp
Growing up as a kid in Eureka, my parents would drive past here all the time and I would always be in the back seat begging them to stop. Now I stop every time I go by and I can't wait till my daughter gets a little bigger to enjoy the train ride and see the wacky Gravity House. The train ride is totally for the $8 or whatever bucks it is, it's like 45 min long and you get to go to the top of the mountain! If you love roadside attractions from the 1950s like me, or just like to see funny strange things, I encourage you to stop! Also, I almost forgot, they are the home of the elusive Chipalope. I bought one for my friend's daughter and I should have bought 3 more for X-Mas presents for other friends kids because now it is her new favorite stuffed animal. They even come with a story about how they may have come about!

Yelp
Fun little quirky off the road stop! Gotta stop at least once. Doesn't take much time. We didn't do the train just the crazy little house that makes you feel crooked. Snack bar, ice cream and gift shop. Playground and lots of outdoor seating. Nice break spot!

Yelp
Pretty cool place. Not much to do except for the gravity house, however they have a little park for the kids and cool little things to look at. The gravity house was not expensive and everything in the confusion house was extremely rare. I like that kind of stuff. Furthermore, their carving in front of the house is in the Guinness World Record.

Yelp
DISCLAIMER: I am high-maintenance and love my hairspray. On our way to a wedding up in Eureka, my boyfriend, his roommate and I decided to take a detour and check out Confusion Hill. Having gone to Mystery Spot, I thought it would be a cool place to take a break at. I was so very wrong...Upon arriving, we enjoyed taking pictures through the cutout cardboard displays and had fun trying to figure out why one of us appeared taller than the other. The cost to go in to the actual house was $5 per person, which seemed reasonable. However, for what we got I was disappointed it was not free. This was a mirror image of Mystery House and I was let down that there was no exciting tour guide to pump us up on our short journey through the house. While exploring, I began to feel tingles on my skin. Being that it was summer, I thought it was just too hot and I was being sensitive. But no...that was not the problem. Once we stepped in to the light I had welts and hives all over my arms and legs. I had obviously been attacked by a swarm of bugs. My immediate hatred began to erupt for Confusion Hill and I was enraged with Mother Nature. Irrational? Yes. In all honesty (minus the irrational anger towards Mother Nature), Mystery Spot is more fun and I don't think Confusion Hill was worth making a stop at since I had fallen victim to bug bites.

Yelp
I always stop here on my way to or from Humboldt. I think its a need little roadside attraction thats filled with history and great photo opportunities. They have a cool little gift shop and their food from the snack shack is pretty good. This is one of my favorite destinations within the forest and I would highly recommend.

Yelp
I break for kitschy roadside attractions! This one along the 101 towards Piercy is hard to miss, and not to miss! For kids and the young at heart, this is a must-stop! The employees were kind and helpful, the variety and concentration of kitsch was right up my alley. We did not see the elusive Chipalope, but many adorable chipmunks were frolicking amongst the majestic redwood trees. As for the actual "Gravity House" I have seen similar representations before, but this one was the best- and you will experience true anomalies of physics and alterations of perception. Well worth the $5 in my opinion (cheaper for kids, and check in on yelp for an added discount). Can't wait to bring our future kid(s) here someday! We did not try the food. We thought the "Twin Tower/9-11" trees dedication was a little over the top, but alright. The train ride looked like fun, but just a tad too expensive for our budget at $8 per person. All in all, a funtastic stop!

Yelp
Fun tourist trap my daughters asked to stop at on our drive up 101 so they could visit the Bill Cypher statue, treasure chest (take aomething/ leave something), and sign the guest book.. Fun Gravity House and train as well as a gift shop & snack bar. There are a couple of tables to sit and eat on, though we just sat on the patch of grass with our picnic lunch.

Yelp
Visited in March 2019. The train was not operating, but my daughter and I had a great time going through the exhibits. The Gravity House is similar to the haunted shack at Knotts Berry Farm. Only $5 entry fee for some hokey fun. If you watched Gravity Falls you'll appreciate the kitsch!

Yelp
What a cool spot! My girlfriends and I took a road trip from San Diego to Klamath and stopped by on our way back home. On our way up it was closed but caught our attention so we made sure to check it out driving back. Glad we did! For $5 you can explore the gravity house which was entertaining. We must've been in there for 30 minutes! And you can also explore what looks like a huge yard with other cool things to try. Although Northern California is beautiful, it can be a bit maddening to see nothing but trees and windy roads for about 5 hours. This spot is the perfect pit stop whether you're traveling North or South. 3 hours after leaving this place I realized I had left my wallet there. I was almost sure that thing was long gone. When I called I spoke to John and to my relief someone had turned it in! The owner was nice enough to ship it to me and I just received it today :) a huge thank you to John and the owner for their honesty and the favor!! Make sure you guys stop by Confusion Hill if you're in the area, it's well worth it!

Yelp
Traveling America's highways once presented quirky attractions that served as rest areas for cars loaded with bored children before the days of in-car videos or the omnipresent smartphones attached to youngster's thumbs like molasses. Parents or grandparents, turn off those electronic gizmos and take the kids to a genuine slice of America's days of travel yore. Confusion Hill may not perplex or totally amaze today's 'sophisticated' youth, but its just plain good old fun visiting a place where gravity's rules appear to be stretched beyond the logic and principles of Newton. This is US101, heading into the magnificent groves of redwood giants. There's a reason you're on this road during a drive vacation with the kids in tow (or maybe just by yourself and your honey). Stop. Smile. Breathe the clean air. Become a ten year old again and just enjoy some great illusion and the magic of Americana. For the low price of admission you'll be glad you stopped and found a bit of youthful simplicity once again and pick up some of those souvenirs that you'll only find in a place like Confusion Hill. Feed your inner child.
