I think maybe I'd been to the North York location of Congee Queen more than a decade ago, but otherwise I haven't had much experience with this rapidly-expanding chain.
Though the place is called Congee Queen, my limited experience with congee has been fairly negative, so we figured we'd order a couple of other dishes to share. That menu, however, is just so overwhelming. I'm not sure how you're supposed to pick food from a menu that has literally over 100 items on it!
Anyway, we wound up grabbing a couple of items that had pictures, the Stir Fried Sirloin with Rice Noodle in Satay Sauce ("stir fried rice noodle roll with bean sprout, chive, green onion & sesame in satay sauce") and Fried Chili Turnip Patties ("diced turnip patties stir fried with shrimp, chicken, pickle & egg in our delicious spicy chili sauce").
As soon as the food arrived, we knew we'd ordered quite poorly, since both dishes are extremely starchy. Nevertheless, I have to admit that I really enjoyed my meal at Congee Queen. We'd read that the Fried Chili Turnip Patties are the thing to order and I can definitely see why. It's just such a flavorful and delicious dish. And the Stir Fried Sirloin with Rice Noodle in Satay Sauce is just as good, too, and both dishes were enhanced by the included chili oil on the table.
Maybe next time we go to Congee Queen, I'll even try out the congee.
