The Best Family-Friendly Hotels in Portugal

"There is nothing subtle about Conrad Algarve. The Hilton-owned, six-story whopper of a hotel in Almancil is as full throttle as you might expect. But with all that resort-y-ness comes the space for youngsters to wheel around and let off steam and for parents to enjoy candlelit dinners, the brilliant spa (try the Intraceuticals oxygen infusion facial and look 10 years younger) and the excellent golf courses right on the doorstep. Best of all, there is always someone in just the right place to arrange it. The Young Guest Concierge will take children to water polo in the indoor pool, mocktail workshops with Wilson Pires—Portugal's Barman of the Year—dance classes, or the Little C Palace kids' club where they'll learn to make marzipan golf balls. There are princess tea parties, treasure hunts, films for the tweens, and blindfolded ice-cream tastings for everyone. Budding cooks can take sushi-rolling classes with cool Aussie chef Andrew McGie, whose prawn popcorn is a hit at Louro restaurant. Kids can do as much of the organized activity as they want, fine-tuning it day by day. For a blast of sun, head down past the playground to the largest swimming pool and install the whole brood on the huge day-beds. The poolside Dado restaurant serves giant grilled langoustines, meaty beef burgers, moreish cod-fish fritters, and non-alcoholic drinks such as Something is Missing (lime juice, mint, brown sugar, and apple juice). The food is excellent everywhere, from the tasting menu at Gusto by Heinz Beck (you will want to eat the fagottelli carbonara every day) to afternoon tea in the bar. Those in search of peace and quiet should go to the heated infinity pool that looks out over the countryside. There might not be a sea view, but the Atlantic is just moments away over the sun-bathed, terracotta-tiled roofs of Vale do Lobo."

Conrad Algarve

"Why book? This luxury hotel in central Algarve offers a thoughtfully curated collection of fabulous amenities and experiences bundled into an intimate resort experience. Set the scene Located just 20 minutes west of Faro, Algarve’s capital where you’ll find the international airport, Conrad Algarve is quite central to every corner of the region: The historic town of Sagres is a 75-minute drive west and Vila Real de Santo António, right by Portugal’s border with Spain, is 45 minutes away. While the Algarve is known for its massive resorts that have been catering to northern Europe’s sun-starved travelers for years, Conrad Algarve is a tidier operation. There are only 154 luxury accommodations, but the property attracts all types, from friend groups in town for golf to multi-generational families on vacation to couples taking a spa-focused weekend getaway. So you’re just as likely to see guys in head-to-toe golf regalia as you are to clock someone in the latest Gucci. The hotel also aims to be a central hub for the region, often hosting art and social events (there’s a basement-level gallery that hosts a party for every new exhibit) attended primarily by Algarve residents, both Portuguese and foreigners. Its fine-dining restaurant Gusto by Heinz Beck attracts primarily external diners, and the spa offers membership programs to locals, meaning you’ll likely find neighbors joining you at the pool, during the daily fitness classes, and at the gym. The backstory When it first opened in September 2012, the Conrad Algarve became Europe’s first Conrad property. Built from the ground up, the property was meant to look like a historic Portuguese palace. And UK-based architects Sigma Seifert delivered with details that give it that sense of place, including the cobble-stone pavement around the property that mimics the Calçada Portuguesa you’d find all over Portugal. The soaring atrium over the lobby evokes the kind grand entryway you would find in a palace in Lisbon, and the endless marble surfaces throughout only reinforce that opulence. Even with all this glitz, it’s still a largely intimate hotel with rooms occupying two wings on their side of that atrium so it never feels too crowded. It’s become a hit among visiting athletes, international glitterati, and affluent families who come to take advantage of the Algarve’s warmth and natural attractions but don’t want to stay in one of the much larger luxury resorts in the area. The rooms For its 134 rooms and 20 suites, the Conrad Algarve, designed by Miguel Cancio Martins (whose portfolio includes the Buddha Bar in Paris), adopted a contemporary residential aesthetic to give guests that tried-and-true home-away-from-home experience. It's easy to see many of the luxury condos and villas in the area looking quite similar. There are over a dozen room categories (including rooms with double beds) that feature oversized tufted leather headboards, geometric-patterned upholstery, floral area rugs, and lots of warm wood accents. Every guest room is stocked with sweet-smelling Byredo toiletries, large full-length mirrors (strangely something that some hotels sometimes lack), espresso machines, and massive balconies. If you want to get a feel for the atmosphere of the resort (or you just want to know if there are still sun loungers left), you want the rooms that face the main pool. From your balcony, it’s a wonderful site: A hotel’s social space full of energy. Units with this view are slightly more expensive than comparable rooms that look over some trees in the back, but the vibes are worth it. If money is no object, you can always spring for the one-bedroom Infinity Penthouse, which comes with an infinity pool, plus an outdoor terrace larger than some of the property’s suites. This suite is apparently often booked by luxury brands looking to do launch events in the Algarve. Food and drink The Conrad Algarve is one of a handful of area resorts that can proudly say they have a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site. Gusto by Heinz Beck is helmed by the very same chef behind La Pergola, the three-Michelin-star fine-dining hotspot in Rome. The intimate setting demands a reservation (there are only a handful of tables), and ahead of dinner make sure you hit the restaurant’s bar for its creative cocktails that are beautifully crafted and easy to toss back. The Mediterranean-inspired kitchen allows for both a tasting and an a la carte menu, which is great if you want a shorter meal. Either way, you must have the Fagotelli Carbonara, Beck’s surprisingly delicate signature dish. And Gusto’s wine cellar is massive—among the largest in Portugal—and features a global collection of vintages. I recommend asking the affable head sommelier Hugo for his favorite Portuguese bottles; the education you’ll get about the national wine-making scene will be priceless. There are two other restaurants: Louro and Lago, both more casual in style. The former is an all-day affair that orbits around simply prepared meat and seafood in the Portuguese style of grilling. A lunch of grilled squid, french fries, and a bottle of local rosé screams summer on-the-Med to me—especially if you have it on the outdoor terrace overlooking the pool. Lago, on the other hand, acts like a lobby bar, except with a sushi counter. Both offer tasty easy-going options if you don’t want to venture out of the property or if you’ve got an early departure the next day. But the Algarve is full of many other fantastic dining options, ranging from mom-and-pop seafood joints to fine-dining Michelin darlings. The spa At nearly 20,000 square feet, the Conrad Spa in the Algarve is a true wellness destination. In addition to treatment rooms, there’s also a spacious 24-hour gym, a separate movement studio for yoga and pilates classes (offered complimentary to guests every morning), an indoor infinity pool, and various wet areas (sauna, steam room, experiential showers). The service menu is quite massive, too: Your standard massages are there (shiatsu, lymphatic drainage, Thai, etc.), as are are nearly 20 different facial treatments featuring results-driven brands like 111 Skin and UK-based AMRA Skincare. But if you’re looking to make wellness the focus of your stay, there are two-to-seven-night programs you can sign up for: There’s a five-night yoga immersion. Or go all-in with the weeklong Life Reset retreat, which includes fitness classes, nature walks, and myriad spa treatments. The area Almancil is definitely one of the toniest towns of the Algarve, where affluent foreigners have settled into the various resort-like developments close to where the Conrad is located. Given that this is an outdoorsy pocket of Portugal, the atmosphere everywhere you go— except in the handful of nearby Michelin-starred restaurants—is pretty casual. You’ll find lots of people taking walks, going on runs, cycling, kayaking, etc. The Conrad is also close (next-door, really) to one of the Algarve’s largest resorts; Quinta do Lago. Here, you’ll find countless restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts, beach clubs, and much more. In fact, athletes who train in Quinta do Lago often stay at the Conrad. One thing to note: Conrad Algarve is not on the beach, but it does have an exclusive concession setup for hotel guests at Vale de Lobo beach (one of the prettiest in the area). Conrad has a complimentary seasonal shuttle that will ferry guests and back forth. The service Portuguese hospitality is known for its warm, easygoing pace. Everyone is eager to help, and that’s delivered with a friendliness that’s familiar, not performative. This is the case in the front desk, the spa, and the restaurants, where staff presents an approachable energy. You are, however, in southern Europe so requests aren’t always fulfilled at the quickest of pace. For families Given the hotel’s glamorous, wellness-fueled Michelin-starred bonafides, you may think that the Conrad Algarve is better suited for an adults-only stay, but a robust set of children’s amenities make it a great choice for families. One of its two outdoor watering holes, the Dado Pool, is specifically designated for families. There’s a playground and kids’ club available to keep the little ones entertained during their vacation. The laundry list of kids’ club programs include more educational activities, too, such as planting and picking vegetables from the resort’s vegetable garden and science experiments where they learn to simulate volcanic eruptions with sodium bicarbonate, vinegar, and liquid soap. Eco effort Since opening over a decade ago, Conrad Algarve has earned a Green Key certification for adhering to sustainability standards set by the Foundation for Environmental Education for tourism venues. The resort also operates as part of Hilton’s Lightstay program, a corporate initiative that allows the brand to measure the company’s global environmental and social impact. There’s also the Conrad Algarve Social Corporate Committee, which spearheads various good-doing efforts from helping get food to vulnerable families in the area to donating toys, food, furniture, and tech to local schools. Accessibility In addition to following Hilton’s general safety standards, Conrad Algarve also has two rooms with accessible features: accessible rain shower and bathtub plus a fire-alarm system adapted to hard-of-hearing guests (with a vibrating pillow). There’s also an accessible walking path for wheelchair users to all resort areas, and the main pool is outfitted with hand-rails. Anything left to mention? What is perhaps most surprising about Conrad Algarve’s service offerings is its impressive collection of regional activities and excursions, curated through the hotel’s relationships with local operators, business owners, guides, etc. The concierge team, for instance, can organize a day out with clam harvesters, who will teach you how to catch razor clams. For a slightly more relaxing adventure, a boat tour of the Ria Formosa National Park and its barrier islands can also be arranged, followed by a fortifying lunch of Algarve delicacies at Estaminé, an eco-friendly restaurant on a stunning desert island." - Chadner Navarro

Writing this review after staying in February / off season. Traveled with family, including 14 year old son. Given the time of year, and potential for suboptimal weather, finding a hotel with an indoor pool that was family friendly was important. While the Conrad Hilton does include an indoor pool, it is treated as an after thought. At times there were not enough loungers for the number of families at the pool, the area was dark and dingy, and the 'hot' tub was not hot at all. We tend to hike during the day, and look forward to relaxing by a pool in the late afternoon. This was not it. We had 2 days of sun, and the hotel did not prepare the outdoor pool area. A full day after the rain, the pool loungers were still puddled with water. ||On the positive side, the Hilton team members we interacted with were amazing. Everyone was kind, accommodating, knowledgeable, and helpful. Breakfast options were plentiful and fresh. The rooms are large, modern, were a comfortable size for 3 of us, and cleaned/tidied twice daily. Our car was often waiting for us at the front before we even called for it. ||Overall enjoyed our stay, but would have really hit the mark had the facilities been better for families. May be a different experience during high season.

I’ve stayed at numerous luxury hotels, but this one truly sets the standard for a 5-star experience. Every staff member was incredibly friendly, and the cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities were impeccable. It felt like the hotel had just been freshly renovated – absolutely perfect. I’d love to return with my family in the future and will definitely be back. The best choice for a relaxing getaway! Thank you for such a wonderful stay, Conrad Algarve♡

Absolutely love this hotel! Staffs are very professional and strived to provide excellent services! Breakfast is beyond excellent, especially with Diane being there, she makes a difference!! We got an upgrade to a suite and the room is massive with balcony, living room and a huge bathroom! The location is a bit remote though there are several restaurants within walking distance. Other than that, more or less need a car or take Bolt! Overall, we had an amazing and relaxing stay! Definitely will come back!

Had a 4 night stay here with the wife to kick off our 25th wedding anniversary year .check in was very good/friendly and informative as diamond members we were informed off what was all included in our stay breakfast bottle of wine and use off spa thermal areas all free off charge which was great . The room was very clean and well equipped nice large balcony overlooking the pool only down side to it it was right at the elevator and every single time someone used it there was a mad whip crap like noise in the room took us a day or 2 to realise what this was so avoid room 601 if you have a choice . Breakfast was very good lots off choices and staff very polite happy and helpful. The thermal suite at the spa was great I’m a runner so after a half marathon it was great to recover in the sauna steam room plunge pool and jet pool . We did use the louro restaurant for evening dinner on the Saturday night and had the local dish cataplana a huge portion at €75 for 2 people was well worth it and tasted great also we got our free bottle of wine as well and 3 beers again reasonable prices staff were very attentive maybe over at times as it was so quiet .the area has a plaza across the street with shops and bars Tony’s Italian food drinks service was great as was the cheeky pup . The area for exploring is good as well walk /run down to the boardwalk was 3 miles and turn left for faro right for villamoura all in all a really great stay and wee will definitely return here again just not to room 601

The Conrad Algarve is a marvelous hotel. We had a lovely three night stay there. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Alexandre at the front desk and the waitstaff at Louro. As diamond members we were upgraded to an incredible suite with an amazing balcony overlooking the front drive. The room was really spectacular. Breakfast every morning was very good. We ended up having dinner on property each night since the food at Louro was so good. We also had a meal at Gusto and it was excellent. We enjoyed the spa a lot as well. Overall, just an excellent hotel. Definitely worth a consideration.

My family and i visited this christmas. On the whole our experience at the Conrad was great! ||||Although i must point out the interior and rooms hugely contribute to that. The reception staff come across with an unpleasant manor, it would benefit the hotel if they were all more friendly and accommodating to customer needs. ||||The hotel was immaculate and the cleaners were all so great. One night my daughter and son was being sick due to food poisoning due to poor food by Danos restaurant, and the cleaner was so helpful and cleaned the bathroom immaculately. ||||The little things like leaving little amenities in the bathroom and a smile from the door staff go along away. ||||At christmas, there was decorations around reception but a bit more christmas spirit was needed especially on the 24th and 25th, such as a pianist, singer or even staff wearing christmas hats. ||||The breakfast is also delicious with a large selection to choose from, topped off with a choice of hot and cold drinks such as coffees or fresh juices. ||||On the whole the Conrad Algarve pleased myself and my family and we will definitely be returning. ||Thank you to the team at the Conrad for making our christmas celebrations so special!

A truly marvelous, delightful, magical stay over Christmas at the Conrad. Starting with the lovely drive up to the hotel, you encounter a feeling of being welcomed. From the check-in process all the way to our checkout early morning on departure day, we were made to feel welcome and the hospitality was superb. The rooms are warm yet modern enough and you melt into the bed. Chats within the app were addressed within minutes, the thermal spa was a welcome amenity at the end of the day, and the overall ambiance of the entire property was just fantastic. We will really miss our stay and experience at the Conrad Algarve.

This is a very nice hotel with tasteful decor and large open spaces. The rooms are spacious and beautifully presented with coffee making facilities and a mini bar. Our room had a lovely terrace overlooking the garden. There is a large swimming pool suitable for keen swimmers wishing to swim laps and also those who prefer a more relaxing dip! The only negative was the limited options available on the menu - perhaps because it was not peak season. Overall a very good hotel and would recommend.

The revenue generated from this new tax will be invested in improving infrastructure, equipment, and services, promoting the sustainability of tourism in the municipality. There are some noticeable differences between Conrad Algarve and other Conrads I've visited (Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, etc.), all of which have fantastic, over the top breakfast buffets, lovely exec lounges, wonderful spa facilities, and (daily) afternoon tea offerings. I believe the main difference boils down to resort hotel vs city hotel, bc resort hotels typically don't have an exec lounge, although some do for VIPs (if your room is located in the VIP corridor, tower, etc.) Overall, an excellent stay! Conrad Algarve opened in Sept 2012 and apparently was the first Conrad to open in Europe. After 12+ years, it appears most of the property is still very well maintained, and most (but def not all) staff were very friendly. BIG SHOUT OUT to Miguel & Jose for being super helpful in and around the lobby/front desk, and of course the lovely Claudia & Mafalda at Luoro breakfast every morning + Loro Lounge Tea Experience! Muito obrigado for the super relaxing stay! Until we meet again! =D

Yelp
What a wonderful hotel to stay at in the Algarve. Not too far from train station or airport and short Uber or Bolt ride from Faro. Across the street from small shopping mall. Excellent service all around from the concieges to the servers at the restaurants. Very quiet, clean and relaxing hotel. Really loved my suite and the view of the pool and beyond. The hotel did a great job at providing cake and bottle champagne for my Anniversary! Thank you. Gusto was a very delicious and high end meal. You have to make a reservation and a must eat! Will definitely return!

Yelp
One of the best hotels in terms of luxury and overall design. Bedding quality and bath robes are top notch. Amazing room service food! Wonderful overall service. However the breakfast variety needs to improve to live up to its five-start status.

Yelp
Wow! When you enter the property you are immediately entering another world. The driveway sets the tone and you are in awe. It's really a gorgeous property. The check-in process was fantastic and you feel like a valued VIP. Their attention and ensuring you know all the resort had to offer was second to none. Very personable and professional. The room was amazing, I'm not kidding! Spacious, beautifully decorated, and comfortable. The bed and linens were great and made for wonderful sleeping. The room was quiet and I couldn't hear anyone else. Breakfast was delicious Ann's the best breakfast buffet we ever experienced. The food was fresh, delicious, and a great variety to choose from. Service wad excellent too. I cannot stress how great the service is at this resort. Everyone we interacted with made us feel like extremely valued guests. Without question the best resort or hotel we have ever stayed or visited. We LOVED it and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Yelp
This was by far the best Conrad I stayed at. The property is relaxing, very well kept, and the service was excellent. We loved the spa that had indoor and outdoor heated pools. We were there in late November but still were able to enjoy the pool outside. We had a suite overlooking the pool which had a large balcony and came with the best amenities. One added benefit of the hotel is Gusto restaurant. It had a wonderful tasting menu. In addition, Gusto has an excellent bar - the incredibly creative bartender developed a list of cocktails that are world class. Such balanced and delicate cocktails are very hard to find. Our 4 day stay felt too short. I'll definitely go back.

Yelp
Just an amazing, luxurious 5 days spent by either the beach or the pool. The service is impeccable--always on point and never overbearing. You can tell that they cater to a well-heeled crowd (just check out the prices at Dunas, the lobby boutique...OMG). Dinner reservations in the Algarve are a MUST in the busy season. If you're using the concierge (which I highly recommend), be sure to advise that you don't want to eat at another hotel/golf course restaurant. They can find you something more casual on the beach. Faro is another good choice for an evening off resort. It has a charming old town, easily walkable with a good number of tapas places to enjoy a meal. The resort is very brit centric. Lots of families, and there are two pools--one "family friendly" and one less so, though there is no "adults only" pool. The only complaint I had was not due to kids, but due to a larger group who planted selves in front of my pool chair and blasted music and smoked. Ugh. Yup, the resort allows smoking by the pool. Most other guests were respectful and left the pool area to light up thankfully. I didn't check out the spa, but spent a couple of days taking the shuttle to the beach. If you plan on eating lunch at the beach, again--pre-book Maria's, or expect to walk 10-15 minutes to the more typical beach bar, Julia's. It's a bit of a hike, but there's not really a hotel concession. The beach chairs at the Conrad's reserved beach are the nicest. 30 euros for 2 chairs for the day. I really can't say enough about the service, though. One of our white coverups got mixed in with the towels during turn-down service. Not only was it recovered from laundry, it was cleaned and arrived back at the room on a hangar and with a note and gift of apology. So sweet!

Yelp
The Quinta do Lago resort took my breath away. Apart from a little misunderstanding with a staff member at Conrad Algarve, the hotel was topnotch as well. I am happy that I succeeded to book there as I was a bit worried the hotel was popular and always full. My friend and I spent 5 days either dipped in the outdoor pools, relaxing on the beach or just walking around admiring the views. That is what I call a vacation!
