One of the four main bridges crossing the Grand Canal, the bridge—also known as the Ponte di Calatrava—is a striking example of contemporary architecture in Venice. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the bridge was completed in 2008 and spans approximately 94 meters. It is made of steel, glass, and Istrian stone, and stands out for its modern curves and transparent materials, in sharp contrast to Venice’s historic surroundings. While visually impressive, the glass flooring has drawn criticism for becoming dangerously slippery in rain or snow, leading to frequent accidents. In response, recent renovations have begun to replace sections of the glass with stone for improved safety.
