One of the best museum experiences I’ve ever had. Constitution Hill gives you a real understanding of South Africa’s history, the struggles, the pain, and the incredible forgiveness that helped build the nation. You truly feel connected to the story, almost like you are part of it. Our group was very moved and emotional throughout the visit. The guides were excellent—organized, knowledgeable, and gave us enough time to explore, reflect, and take photos. A must-visit in Johannesburg!

We joined a guided tour and it was one of those visits that gets under your skin—standing in the old cells, reading notes on the walls, then stepping into the light of the Constitutional Court a few minutes later. Our guide was calm and clear, gave space for questions, and never rushed the heavy bits. We took a couple of photos, then mostly just listened. After the tour we wandered the courtyards and let it sink in. Sun on the brick, bits of artwork tucked into corners, and that wide view over Joburg that makes you breathe a little deeper. It felt honest, human, and hopeful—like the kind of place you’re grateful to have seen in person.

Visiting Constitution Hill with my school learners was an unforgettable and powerful experience. The museum offers a deep and emotional insight into South Africa’s prison history and the journey towards democracy through the Constitution. The learners were fully engaged and amazed by the stories shared. It was incredibly moving to witness their emotional reactions as they connected with the harsh realities that former prisoners faced. The visit sparked meaningful conversations and helped the learners understand the value of human rights and the importance of our Constitution. This is truly one of Gauteng’s most important historical sites. Every South African especially the youth should visit Constitution Hill at least once. It’s an eye-opening experience that leaves a lasting impact.

The place is a great dive in the history of South Africa’s (in)justice system and its ties to Apartheid. It has great depth of information in the life of prisoners and makes for a reality shock at times. Unfortunately, many of the media such as videos and audio was not working during the visit. If you can, carve out 3-4h for a full in-depth visit.

Constitution Hill is one of those places that sticks with you long after you leave. Walking through the old prison blocks and then into the Constitutional Court feels intense in a good way. You get this heavy sense of what happened there, mixed with a calm, hopeful feeling in the court itself. The guides do a great job of explaining the history without rushing you, and there are a lot of small details that make you stop and think. I’d say it’s more of a quiet, reflective outing than a fun day out, but it’s absolutely worth it. Allow enough time to read, look properly and sit for a bit in the court. Afterward, stepping outside and seeing the Joburg skyline from the hill feels different once you’ve taken in everything that happened on that site.

Visited Constitution Hill as part of a tour organised by Mo Afrika Tours. We arrived a few minutes late and hopped on to the 10am tour hosted by guide Brenda. I counted 48 people in out group which made it difficult to hear when we were moving in and out of confined spaces. There seemed to be another tour that started after ours that only had 10 people in it. Despite this, Brenda commanded an audience - she was an amazing storyteller and still had humour and was entertaining despite the seriously depressing subject matter around cell block 4. The tour encompassed the main cells, solitary confinement cells, a Mandela/Gandhi exhibition and then onto the Consitutional Courts where we saw inside the Chambers area and where the justices sit and a huge woven South African flag. Flame of Democracy burns outside. Would have liked to have spent longer here and checked out the cells Mandela was held in but it was just one stop of many on our day tour.

Ek was al in n paar museums. Hierdie was een van die beste en hartroerende ondervinge van my 63 jaar. An unforgettable experience. Unfortunately I was pressed for time and could only spend 1h30 there. Will definitely going back. Our guide (Brenda/Ntombekaya?) was eloquent, informed and humorous. She added to the overall fantastic experience. Dankie!!

Being an Indian I have learned a lot about Gandhi and the Satyagraha movement during the visit here.
