On the Grid : Contemporary Art Gallery

"The CAG is a public art gallery, with a focus on emerging contemporary artists. Its scope is international, but the CAG has played and continues to play a significant role in promoting emerging local artists. The gallery space is located in the podium of a residential tower on Richards and Nelson, in an award-winning design by architects Martin Lewis and Noel Best. Featuring two galleries and a series of window displays along Nelson street, the CAG continues to deliver an exhilarating and diverse exhibition program." - Becki Chan & Milos Begovic

This is a small gallery but they make good use of the space and have some decent exhibits.

Everyone is welcome to see the exhibitions free of charge. The space is nice and well informed. When I was there I got to learned about how deaf people are living within our society. It was an interesting topic I never thought about. If you are interested in art, definitely check this place out. There is a public parking close by too.

The staff is very friendly. All of the visitors are quiet and polite, enjoying their time.I saw a short movie there, and I felt that this place is a heart corner of the busy city because I acquired some meaningful time and strength from there. My English is not good, but art can be fluently conveyed without any words!

Well, not much to get excited. It takes 3-4 minutes to check is. Not worth to walk here :(

Great space. Love Christine’s work seen here. Glad to catch it. She does prints too, she’s worked with El Nopal Press in Los Angeles.

Yelp
I support the arts, and I love exploring museums and galleries, wherever I go. So I was thrilled to pass this contemporary art gallery many times in my travels in Yaletown (my new neighborhood, as we moved here six months ago). I finally got the chance the other day to go in and check it out. I know this gallery has various "off-site" locations (such as at the Yaletown-Roundhouse station), but I am only reviewing this site on Nelson Street. It's very small. There are two exhibition rooms, with a small ante-room by the front door with published materials (books and flyers) and a few eclectic knick-knacks. The actual exhibition rooms contain artwork installations that rotate regularly, so every 3-5 months or so, the exhibits will change. When I visited, there was a screen projector in one room, projecting scenes of waterfalls and/or clouds and sunrises and sunsets on the walls. (I forget the artist's name). The other room contained an installation by Andrew Dadson highlighting plant forms and light. I really enjoyed the Dadson exhibit, and I read up on the exhibit and the artist off the complementary flyers provided. My kid and I liked how admission to the gallery was free, and we enjoyed checking out the two artists' works on display. But the site and exhibits are so small, it took us ten minutes to see it all. I think most people would spend between 5-15 minutes here, I say this so people reading this don't make this gallery an end destination and drive here specifically to check it out. Better to add it to your list with other things to do in Yaletown.

Yelp
Came here with a group of friends to check out the Deanna Bowen's "A Harlem Nocturne" exhibit with some friends. It's a definitely a more intimate gallery, and while the architecture may not be anything to phone home about, I thought it was really nice. Very clean, well lit, and yes, you guessed it -- contemporary. While the Deanna Bowen exhibit was great, another really stand-out feature for me was the little "Resources" nook. I spent about 30 minutes there, waiting for my punctually-challenged friends, so I really got into things. Great selection of books, prints, and artwork, most available for purchase, about or relating to the various exhibits. The little TV playing the loop of five or six videos, again, relating to the various exhibits, was a great for either an introductory or deeper look into the displayed artists or their exhibits. It's a chic, little gallery. A great place to check out if you've got an hour to kill downtown. I'd absolutely go again!

Yelp
I am not impressed. I mean obviously, it's not this gallery's fault, but clearly we don't value publicly-funded art that much in this city. The Contemporary Art Gallery has two small rooms, and no permanent exhibit. The video installations they had on display were... well, maybe my taste in art is unrefined, but I found them lackluster at best. Or maybe I just didn't get it, I don't know. Anyways. This city deserves a bigger contemporary art space with some permanent art that people can go and look at and get inspired by.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit here. Both exhibits were evocative with plenty of take-away reading material provided. The space is clean and, yep, contemporary. Oh, and admission is FREE!! What a concept. I appreciated the supplementary books and info on exhibit artists in the museum shop but I'd like to see that area expanded (and with less seemingly disconnected items for sale, like very old show catalogs etc.) ps. Thanks for not shying away from Gordon Bennett's important work.

Yelp
The quality, unique art at the Contemporary Art Gallery impressed me. Yes it is small, but I spent at least 30 minutes inside looking at the art and when I hear "gallery", I expect it to be a small space. When I went, one of the exhibitions was photography and one was of videos. The videos were all like one photo with gradual fades to and from darkness, image clarity and color, so very unique, beautiful and interesting. This is a good place to visit the same day you go to the Vancouver Art Gallery because they are so close together.

Yelp
The Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery is a very small gallery, and typically houses only one or two (very contained) exhibits at a time. The architecture of this building is nothing to rave about; it's kind of boxy, and often the exhibits are not exactly stellar either. But, entrance is free, and if you park at a nearby meter, you might get away with spending a mere looney to see some (possibly) avant-garde, and (possibly) quality art. Even if the exhibit isn't great, you'll get to be just a tiny bit more in the art world know for having dropped in here.
