Old school pizzeria vibe on the inside...a bit of a dive bar which we loved. The service was great...we sat at the bar and the bartenders made some great pizza recommendations and we fun, friendly and nice. The beer was cold off the tap and poured to perfection. The pizza was amazing a bit greasy BUT the flavor was incredible! Pricing was fair on all items...if in the area and looking for a great pizza joint..Conte's is the place to be

Came here to celebrate end of math camp that my husband was teaching. He loved this place during undergrad, and brought me there to experience for the first time. It was absolutely slammed when we got there. The staff is quite nice. We were rushed to order (while we were still waiting on a table) since they were so busy so it’s understandable. I did get dirty silverware but chose to ignore it as we’re eating pizza, don’t need any of that. But I went to use the women’s restroom and there a was a huge guy in there washing his hands. I did a double take and backed out of the bathroom to make sure I walked into the right one. Yep, he’s in the wrong one. Anyway, food was great, the pizza was absolutely delightful, will return for some of the best pizza I’ve had in the tristate area.

Google
Great pizza with super friendly service. Crazy busy on a Saturday night but they take your pizza order as you're waiting to be seated. We were seated into 10 minutes and the pizza arrived shortly after

Google
We got a large half pepperoni and half sausage pizza and it was delicious. Will be back to enjoy other food on the menu It's kind of deceiving from the outside but this is a huge bar with a bunch of seating areas. The vide is casual and it was packed on a Monday night

Google
Pizza are great but anchovy is too salty and far from healthy. Salads are so fresh and meatballs are good

Richard Lisonbee

Google
This was recommended to me by a local and it did not disappoint! Small enough to be intimate, and popular enough to be effortlessly efficient. The food really is the show piece of the restaurant. The pepperoni, garlic pizza is what the bar tender recommends and so do I. Thin crust that stays straight when picked up. For an Utah native, this was a revelation on what pizza could taste like. I cannot wait to come back!

Google
Cozy Italian restaurant with phenomenal pizza. Lived up to the reputation and Portnoy's recommendation. The cheese is amazing and just the right amount of sauce. Crust was a little bit overdone and flaky but I didn't care because the rest of the pizza was so good. Tried the meatballs too, which were good. Looking forward to the next time I come out to Princeton so I can stop here again.

Google
Came here for lunch after apple picking based off of reviews. It was pretty empty. The pizza came out and it looked crispy and delicious. I loved the flavor of the garlic and mushroom and the tomatoes was amazing! However I’m not a crispy dough person so I just ate the toppings and cheese. I then tried the plain and it was MUCH better than the topping slices. On the plain, the cheese was crispy, flavorful and the sauce was fresh! I did enough the pizza slices but the plain more however it is not my go to places. This type of pizza is for people who like CRISPY CRUNCHY pizza.

Yelp
Excellent neighborhood pizza in princeton! Super busy even at 5pm, and prices and taste were both on point. Old school vibe and small menu It had a old style pizza place meets a dive bar ambiance Recommend if looking for a casual dinner
google avatar

Yelp
Fun neighborhood bar vibe. Busy. Usually a wait. Decent table service. Can get loud. Known for its bar pie style pizza. I find it a bit greasy but it usually has great thin crispy under carriage. Good place to go with a group of friends after the game and have a few beers with the pizza. Portnoy give this place an 8.9. I think its more like a 7.9. Dont forget a Bucket o' Rocks. Cheers.

Yelp
Heard a lotta hype about the pizza so I tried it out. Was very crispy like I like it but the overall taste was very bland. Sauce was missing a LOT of salt. Dunno if that's the norm or if the Salt shaker was on vacation, but the pie was lacking in overall flavor. With that being said I also ordered a second pie with pepper's and onions. Typically upon making that request I'd expect to get green peppers, but to my surprise got ROASTED RED PEPPERS! A very pleasant surprise which probably saved that pizza since the sauce was bland there as well. The RRP's were absolutely delicious with the onions. Would definitely recommend that pie. ....now they just gotta find that salt

Yelp
This place is as old school as they come. This was my 3rd time here and by far the best tasting pizza I had of the 3 times here. Pizza was cooked well but not burnt and super flavorful. There was 3 of us and we got a large sausage onion garlic (crumbled sausage for the win) the only thing I might've wanted was a lighter hand on the garlic but that's me just knit picking. We also got a small plain which again was cooked wd but not burnt and was absolutely pleased w how this one came out. We also ordered a side of meatballs which were fine but prob would not order again (a bit too firm for my liking) and a small salad which was simple but w their house Italian dressing complimented the pizzas perfectly. Our server was extremely polite and attentive and quick w their house food and drinks. Oh. Had a proper pour of makers mark as well. The bartender has a generous pour which I can totally appreciate. I look forward to coming back for more pizza, salad, and bourbon. Thank you Contes for the lovely meal (my father in law loves your pizza )

Yelp
Conte in Princeton has carved out a reputation as one of New Jersey's best pizza spots, and it's easy to see why. With over 75 years of history, this place has a nostalgic charm that adds to the dining experience. The moment you walk in, you can feel the warmth of tradition, and the cozy atmosphere, complemented by a bar, invites you to settle in for a meal. The star of the show here is undoubtedly the pizza. Conte specializes in a thin crust that's perfectly crispy, allowing the flavors to shine through. The generous layer of sauce adds a nice tang and keeps the slices from feeling dry. Each bite is a delightful balance of textures and flavors that pizza enthusiasts will appreciate. That said, the menu is quite limited, focusing predominantly on their pizza offerings. If you're looking for a wide variety of options, you might be left wanting. Additionally, while the pizza is indeed good, I have to say that there are other places in New Jersey that offer a more remarkable experience in terms of flavor and variety. The prices here are on the higher side, which can be a drawback. For what you pay, you might expect a bit more creativity or selection. Conte could really benefit from refreshing its menu and introducing some new items to entice repeat visits. In summary, Conte is a solid choice for pizza lovers, especially if you're in the area and craving a classic slice. Just keep in mind that while it has its strengths, there are other options out there that might leave you more satisfied. Definitely worth a visit, but it may not be the top contender for your next pizza outing!

Yelp
Conte's in Princeton is an iconic thin-crust pizza establishment in an interior that has looked the same since my dad first visited in the 70s. We stopped by for some Dave Portnoy-approved sausage and pepperoni pies (rated an impressive 8.9). Conte's has been a Princeton mainstay for over 80 years for a reason and will continue to be so as long as it keeps serving great pizza

Yelp
The pizza is good thin crust quality. The dough is fresh and baked crisp. The sauce is good. The cheese is very greasy. I am not a fan of this but some people are lovers of this this. I am not. I like my cheese Mozzarella that is dense and not greasy.

Yelp
Food : Limited items, we got 3 pizza pies, pepperoni, special which is all toppings minus anchovies and plain pizza. The special was tasty in particular the sausage but too many toppings it just slid off which made hard to eat and very messy. Pepperoni was cooked to crunchy perfection which I like the best. Plain cheese too plain. Bar: blue moon draft is always best with pizza Service: large group and yet bill was confused with bar tab on back and then handwritten total on front very not legible which caused confusion to both front register and us. Ambiance: very low key tables, dark inside and bar feature in front. Very casual home in wall vibe.

Yelp
Enjoyed Conte's very much. No frills about it... just straightforward pizza or drinks. Menu is simple and I love it. My favorite was the sausage pizza. Good crisp on the dough and flavor was there. The plain pizza was good too. I love that Conte's knows what they do well and they just do that. I think Portnoy's score was a little high but it was still good.

Yelp
When you step inside Conte's you feel as if you've transported to 1963. The bar, tables and decor are straight from the days of JFK and the atmosphere is bubbling with conversation in a full dining room. The only other noticeable thing was a musty, basement, odor that hung in the air. Servers were attentive and very quick to take drink and food orders. If you're looking for an extensive menu; you will not find one here. The pizza on the other hand, took over 30 minutes to arrive table side. Conte's menu. Pizza, Salad, and a small selection of Subs. That's what they're known for and that's what they do. Very limited Beer selection and the same for wines. Do not expect any IPA, or craft for that matter, but your usual suspects are available. I know they keep "old school" tradition; however they're missing the mark here for me and I'm sure many others. The Pizza: we ordered a Large Sausage,Pepperoni and Onion pizza. Barstool sports sang praises and scored them high. The verdict... I don't know how this pizza could be rated as highly as it is. Nothing higher than a 6.2 for me. The crust is crispy, thin but has a flavor like Matzoh and is extremely dry. The cheese is very generic, not a very flavorful cheese but not horrible either. The sauce had a very "out of the can" and onto the pie without much more seasoning. It was just there. The saving grace was the toppings. The pepperoni especially was one of the best I've had. The cup style and a good amount. The bottom line here is when you come, don't expect gourmet or a "special" type of pizza. It's a basic bar pie, that definitely isn't deserving of the hype it has received.

Yelp
When the back entrance is the front entrance, things can get interesting. At 4:00 pm sharp on Saturday there was a line. The building is a total dive which can be an indication of some really good grub but the musty smell and Formica tables were off putting. The staff is welcoming friendly even when things get hectic. Now for the good and bad of the pizza: the cheese, sauce and spices are spectacular, seriously awesome. The crust though...total yuk...dried out white bread cracker awfulness which destroyed the entire pizza experience.

Yelp
Price: sandwhich $10 L pepperoni pizza $24 Rybi take: one thing NJ does right is pizza. We have been trying to try contes for quite some time and finally got the opportunity. Dave Portnoy gave this place a 8.9 and even though he is a piece of shit, he knows a thing or two about pizza. We got the half pepperoni and half sausage pizza, which caused it to be a bit more soggy in the center but I think worth it to have the pepperonis. The crust on this pizza was great, nice thin bar style crust with an amazing crunch. We also got a meatball and sausage sandwich, which were good but you come here for the pizza. Overall an amazing pizza at an amazing price, if you are in Princeton this is a must try. But this was not the best pizza we have had though, B+C pizza in Laguna Nigel, CA still holds onto its crown.

Yelp
Contes is located a few blocks from the center of town. It is definitely a place for locals with a constant stream of people both eating in and taking out. It has a big parking lot. The vibe is like a corner bar/sports bar. The games were on several tvs. While we were waiting to be seated, a waitress took our order. We were hungry so this was appreciated. Within a few minutes we were seated and didn't wait long for the pizza. The pizza was tasty. It had a thin cracker type crust. The sauce was really good. I loved that the cheese was a little toasted! There is a full bar. My hubby was a little disappointed that sodas didn't have refills.

Yelp
Classic Conte's! Haven't been here in years and guess what - nothing has changed! Same atmosphere, menu and great pizza. Pizza is very personal- either you will like their style of pie or not. The waitress asked if we needed a menu - we didn't! Sausage pie and 2 diet cokes. Very few places stay unchanged over the years. Conte's is a trip back in time. We enjoyed the trip!!
google avatar

Yelp
There's nothing about Conte's that screams "Princeton" unless you're talking about Princeton, Ohio. Inside Conte's you could be Anywhere, USA piling in after a long day at the plant. This is a frozen in time drinking establishment that serves a damn fine pizza on formica tables that have been scrubbed to a dull patina over decades. Yelp has no power over a place like this and that's as it should be. The menu itself is compact, basically salad, pizza and what can only be described as rectangular meatballs that are worth the trip all by themselves. Pull up a stool, have a brew, grab some pizza and watch the game... just like they do in Ohio. Five easy stars

Yelp
We stopped in after my daughter's swim meet. The pizza was "good" (not great). I can't complain about the long wait because we knew there would be a wait. However, I expected better with the food. First, the salad ($8 for a small) was terrible. Nothing but a mound of watery iceberg lettuce and a few tomatoes. I do not recommend it. For the pizza, we ordered a large with half plain, half sausage. It was tasty but also greasy. I also found the crust to be too hard/crunchy. Pretty good but not what I would call memorable. Overall, with the uncomfortable space to wait (standing the entire time) and not being bowled over by the food, I don't plan to return anytime soon. Suggestion to the owners: I know your pizza is extremely popular, but please up your game with the salad.
google avatar

Oscar E.

Yelp
The pizza is great! Thin and crispy just the way I like it. They have very simple salads also. Nothing fancy but sometimes less is more.

Jose T.

Yelp
This is my go to place in central Jersey for a good pizza pie. Employees are always nice, clean, and the pizza is amazing. Princeton NJ has a gem. I've been going there for decades since I played soccer for Princeton

Garrett F.

Yelp
The worst most terrible service in the world. And how can a single large plain pizza take 2 hours. Not that busy or good.
google avatar

Kurt M.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic pizza. We got the pepperoni, sausage and garlic. Best pizza I ever had!! Friend got sausage sandwich and raved about it. Old school vibe and the service was superb, she gave us a lot of the history of the place.

Yelp
First time visiting. Came here on a Sunday night. Super friendly service. Already busy. Very fast service to sit, get menus and get drinks. Full bar with limited options. Fountain soda drinks. Waitress was fantastic (her grandfather was the original Conte and opened up the place in 1947 according to her). Ordered the special pizza (her recommendation) which had all the toppings minus anchovies and olives (pepperoni, homemade sausage, fresh garlic, onions, mushrooms) and a plain pie. Plain pie came out faster. The homemade sausage is phenomenal - that plus the fresh garlic just makes it incredible. I'll admit, the rest of the other toppings is a lot on the pizza. However if you love a pizza loaded up, it's definitely delicious. The plain pie was good. The sauce was excellent and not hidden by cheese. The crust takes some getting used to. I wasn't expecting it. It's a very dry, cracker like crust. Almost like a thick saltine. I don't dislike it but it took some getting used to. It's more noticeable on the plain pie. Had these toppings been on a regular thin crust, this would have been a perfect pizza. It's definitely more unique and you know how passionate NJ gets about it's pizza. This could be a good transition pizza for out of towners that aren't used to super thin crusts. Definitely worth trying. All of the service was good, our regular waitress and others made sure we were okay. The barkeep came to see if we needed a refill on soda, said yes but it's clear she got distracted. Our waitress took care of it immediately. The tables are a little too close together for my liking but it's fine. Super casual place. No outdoor seating. Reasonably priced for the portions.

Yelp
Yum! Conte's pizza is delicious. A family owned spot and always has great vibes and delicious pizza. Always welcoming/homy spot. If you have no been to this spot, I highly recommend!
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
A local classic- I'd recommend to any Princeton resident. If you're a non-resident, I'd prepare to be met with some abrasive customer service. I attempted to call for an order but was met with a blunt response of "we don't do slices of pizza, just whole pies. Please check the menu and then call back when ready." Although unpleasant, the pizza was absolutely delicious and was relatively fast (beware that during dinner hours, an order can take up to 2 hours to become ready). You truly cannot go wrong if you are looking for NE Pizza (in my opinion, the only and best type of pizza there is)

Mike R.

Yelp
Conte's used to be one of our favorite spots for lunch......pizza was still good but the service was not the best and $18 for a family salad that was only lettuce, tomatoes and onions was excessive. Mike

Frank S.

Yelp
I had not visited this establishment in quite some time and decided to order a pie last weekend. Unfortunately, I found it to be quite disappointing compared to my previous experiences. The dough was lacking in flavor, and overall, the pie did not meet my expectations. It appears that there may have been changes to the recipe, which I believe were not for the better. I had hoped for a delightful experience, but it did not turn out as anticipated. If there has been a change in ownership since my last visit in 2008, that might explain the differences. Wishing you all the best moving forward.

Yelp
A Princeton pizza top choice for locals and visitors alike! Coming in from the backside parking lot, Conte's Pizza and Bar in Princeton offers a spacious and cozy atmosphere with the aroma of pizza in the air, a diner-style setting at the bar and tables, and plenty of drink options. They're well known for their simple thin-crust pizzas, offering a simple variety of toppings including anchovies! We knew we were gonna be drinking all night though so we went with the pepperoni on this go around. The crust is very crunchy and they seem to leave a lot of flour on the dough to absorb the oils a bit. My buddy had their side order of meatballs which looks pretty solid of a choice as well. The service at Conte's was excellent with staff members being friendly and attentive and our drinks came out delicious. For a Friday night, it wasn't too crowded, also being St. Patrick's Weekend, but I was told it was also spring break week for the students.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
True Score: 2.5 Stars This maybe the most disappointing review I've ever written. The Pizza man touted this spot as a bucket list must stop. We were very excited about our visit. The place is like a VFW hall with a big bar. It was COVID closure times so there were several restrictions. We ordered a simple pepperoni pizza well done. I'll have to tell you, we were not only underwhelmed, the pizza wasn't even good. We literally threw most of it out. The pizza has this very strange texture and taste. My wife thought it was better than I did. Portnoy rated this pizza in the 9's, I would barely give it a 6. Sadly, it was not good. Sorry
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday around the time they opened and it only took 20 minutes to get a pizza. There is plenty of parking in the back and that is where people usually enter anway. The sauce and chees were not bad but the crust kills this pizza. It is so bland and just not great. If I saw was given the pizza again I would eat it but I would not go out of my way to get it.
google avatar

Cameron W.

Yelp
The pizza was not worth $30 per pie. Bland sauce and skimpy toppings. Don't believe the hype. There is no way this place makes anyone's favorite pizza.
google avatar

Curtis Y.

Yelp
Busy Sunday night, wait line to get in. I was ignored by the wait list staff taking down name of people before and after me, and I had to chase down to get my name taken. Customers have a nasty attitude as well. One loudly interjected for me and my friend to move up in the line without courtesy. Accidentally walked in front of the kitchen door in the line and the bartender yelled at us before we could reason. Same bartender ignored my friends request for drinks while serving others waiting for their table. Commotion city. I was beginning to feel like "my kind" wasn't welcomed in this restaurant. Another non looking Asian dude stands around the kitchen door and same bartender didn't give him the anger treatment, and rather had a pleasant nod and exchange. Staff also ends up yelling at a seemingly new bus boy that is in training. Not a stress free experience. Your call, there are a lot of pizza places that offer a similar bar pie.
google avatar

Cody O.

Yelp
Conte's serves up a great pie and is one of my go-to's in the Princeton area. The pizza has a crisp, cracker-thin crust. The cheese is greasy and delicious. This is the kind of pizza you pair with a few drinks with friends. I also loved the rich, thick tomato sauce. It was flavor-packed and balanced well with the oily, saltiness of the cheese. The staff was friendly, the service was quick, and they have plenty of seating. The long, wide bar table can fit a bunch of people in the event that table space is all filled up. Overall, I'm definitely a fan of Conte's.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
We had everything from the salad, meatballs, sausage, and a Red Pepper, Onion, Sausage Pizza... Everything was good and recommended. Place was clean and service was friendly. Definitely 5 Stars and a place to stop in for some Pizza.
google avatar

Margot C.

Yelp
Solid solid solid. Good pizza - simple menu - nice service. But the best part is the ambiance and the space. A complete throwback and just classic.
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
I'm a fan of a thicker crusted pizza & that is the ONLY reason they are not getting a 5 from me. Their cheese and sauce combo is something special. You can tell they use good cheese. Highly recommend.

J L.

Yelp
Highly recommended by my son. Pizza was great. Unfortunately would have tasted better in the restaurant. Surprisingly not as tasty carry-out.
google avatar

Joseph J.

Yelp
This is your quintessential pizza home town hang out with food that uses the highest quality ingredients. The staff make you feel like your eating in their kitchen and the entire atmosphere is nostalgic and cozy. This is by far one of my favorite and go to dining experiences in our area! Worth the wait always! Large salad side of meatballs to start, Double Pepperoni and cold Peroni's you can't go wrong!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Great authentic thin-crust pizza. You can't go wrong with pepperoni, as it's been a classic at this pizzeria for many years! Love the throwback vibe with the big vintage bar, no-frills tables & chairs, and a waiter staff that has been around a while. This place is all about the EATS, and the line out the door tells you it's here to stay. Can't wait to go back...
google avatar

Imtiaz S.

Yelp
If Horrace Greeley were to come to Conte's Pizza Bar he would tell the people in the west, "Please, just stick to eating pineapple, but if you really want pizza, go east young man". The crust is thin and crisp. The tomato has color. Everything is so fresh. I got the veggie special. Sheer joy. If you go to Conte's remember the entrance is by the back door.

John S.

Yelp
I don't get it. The hype for this place is, to me, over exagerated. The pizza is very oily, just shy of $30 with one topping, and $18 for a bowl of lettuce with half a tomato and some onion is robbery.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Haven't been here in at least 10 years and it's nice to see that nothing has changed at all. Great bar pies, fast friendly service and a fun old school atmosphere. My only complaint is to me its just a tad on the pricey side for what it is, but still a damn good pie!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Been going to Conte's for over 20 years and have recommended it many times over. Went back for the first time in a couple of years and was disappointed. Pizza crust was loaded with so much flour and the salad was a watery iceberg mess. The worst offense was the waitstaff. Just rude. Table was dirty but they plunked down plates and utensils regardless. When we asked if they could wipe the table down, the waitress picks up the dishes and hands them to my son and asks him to hold them while she wipes the table down (needless to say that she's also spraying cleaner in close proximity to us). Overall she was brusque and unpleasant. Shout out to the woman at the register who was friendly and pleasant though.
google avatar

Mitch B.

Yelp
So I've been hearing about Conte's for awhile - since I started working in the Princeton area a couple years ago. Finally got around to getting it today and all I can say is...wow...how overrated! Wasn't busy at noon - it's a Monday and college is not in session so that makes sense. Got the pie expecting greatness and it was...fine? Certainly not bad. Sauce is tasty, crust is kinda bland, the amount of grease on the pie is crazy, and I just found it nothing to write home about. Maybe Barstool sports set me up for failure by rating it as highly as they did... Place is also a dump - which I actually don't mind, I kinda dig a dive bar that also has good food, and I guess if I'd been throwing down miller lites as opposed to bringing the pie back to my office I might have been more into it but there was really nothing here that 'stood out'. If I were using the BSS rating system, this would be a 6 for me. Much better options in the area and in the wider state overall.
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best pizzas around the area. If you haven't tried them highly suggest you do! Soooo worth it. Since I found them I've gone back about 3-4 times, no regrets.

Pam S.

Yelp
Conte's is all about the local no-frills lowkey bar vibe and not much about the food. The pizza is OK; I agree with others that the crust is crackery and bland. Service was pleasant. Good place to meet up with friends for a beer and snacks; not the place to go for fine dining or even great pizza.

Owen S.

Yelp
Conte's is a great environment and has some of the best bar pie you can get. Easily my favorite pizza in the area.

Jeannette Q.

Yelp
The next best thing to a slice of heaven I have loved to live in the Princeton area for decades. My daughter and I have tried to find a pizza better than Conte's. We have consistently failed bc/ the combination of pizza, pasta and personality staff to find another pizza place we adore!

Maxwell S.

Yelp
Overrated always has been even since the 90's. If you like this place you probably are lacking taste buds and smell

I.Vonne V.

Yelp
Great local pizza. Pizza is delicious we always get it well done. The wait staff are amazingly efficient even when crowded. Sit at the bar or at a table service is the same great!

Yelp
Unbelievable pizza !! You may have to wait a bit and it's so worth it ! I drive 50 minutes just to eat here !!!
