Yemas de San Leandro – Seville, Spain - Gastro Obscura

"The nuns at Convento de San Leandro in Seville, Spain, have sold just one item for more than four centuries: yemas de San Leandro. These rich, creamy nuggets are a simple mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and egg yolks. Establishments across Spain make traditional yemas (diners enjoy yemas de Santa Teresa, for example, on October 15, the saint’s feast day). But to acquire San Leandro’s signature supply of yemas, you’ll have to visit the convent, a Seville institution since the 13th century. When you enter the foyer, you’ll notice a revolving tray embedded in a wooden door. Reference the price list, then place the appropriate amount of money on the tray and rotate it behind the wall. A few moments later, a box of wrapped yemas should appear in its place. You’ll have to put your faith in San Leandro’s residents, but this shouldn’t prove too difficult. You’re dealing with nuns, after all. None" - rachelrummel, stealmyrecords, mocchiatto

Tucked away in a quiet and quaint area, we visited this convent to experience buying some sweet treats from the nuns. Got 12 cupcakes for 5€! The cupcakes were plain buttery batter and not too sweet :) Just ring the bell & let the nun know what you want - menu on the door. Place your cash on the rotating shelf!

The coconut sweets were delicious. It took some time for me to realise there is a white ring button, I had been knocking without success. I didn't know whether to put the money in the same place where the nun placed the sweets or if anywhere is ok, so got my arm stuck between the swirly thing and the wall :D

Sadly, today, January 2025, the rotating door is "inobra" which apparently means "not working". You have to go into the church, and a friendly nun will serve through a metal gate, your treats. A neat little wooden box. 7E for small sweets, basically cooked egg yolks with a hard, sweet cap. Very sweet. It's a donation. I suppose 400 years of rotating, the door needs a rest.

Very cool experience. Run by nuns who you don't see. You place your order, put the money in rotating door and they put the food in. Need cash. There were no yemas on the day I went so I got cocadas. Very yummy.

Stopped by to get the renown egg yolk candies. They were kinda strange and very sugary. Seems like one of those things you do to say you've done it or maybe if you grew up eating them you like them more. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Delicious muffins made from an ancient recipe. The novices run the store behind a spinning wooden apparatus that keeps the world from seeing them. For five Euros you get a dozen of them. Magdalenas or candies representing I imagine, Mary Magdalena are sold as well.

Very unique experience to buy cake from window where you don't even see the seller and also seller does not see customer. For me cake (yamas - mixture of lemon juice, egg yolk and lot of sugar) was too sweet however not bad at all. But the buying experience is why we did it. And it's worth that. They (nuns) inside the monastery sell juat the cakes for 4 centuries. Basically you place your money (the amount depends on what you want, there is a menu with prices, not sure but probsbly you need to have exact amount) on the counter, turn it around and wait a bit. After very short time the counter will turn again and you find your sweet order inside the bag. You just hear the voice of nun saying thank you.

Unique experience in buying their special yemas. Payment and release is made thru a revolving platform and you don’t interact with any person on the other side
