Retracing the History of Freetown Through the Life and Legacy of Edna Lewis

"But you can taste a similarly rich, matriarchal heritage in the fried chicken at Cooper's Chicken & Catering, an aluminum-sided storefront in downtown Orange. Cooper’s almost 200-year-old signature recipe, now closely guarded by owner Denise Thompson, originated with her women forebears in nearby Gordonsville."

We first heard about Cooper's when we went to the festival Ben gordonsville. We heard so much about it and couldn't wait to try the chicken. When we finally found their stand, the line was just astronomically long. We walk by it as they're cooking the chicken and it smelled really good. We were too hungry to wait in line so we decided to walk up the street to an actual restaurant. We've been to that restaurant many times but this will be the first time we tried their chicken. We were completely stunned by how good the chicken was. We even walked back to the festival to see if the line had gone down for Cooper's, which it did not. We were unaware that they had a restaurant as we drive by this place all the time. We decided to go recently. There's plenty of parking, and the restaurant itself is semi hidden from the roadway. The signage is not that great, until you actually show up to the actual restaurant pull into the parking lot. Upon entering, we were immediately hit with a heavy smoky oil feel. To be honest with you as soon as we entered all the eyes of everybody that was in there went right to us. I didn't really care at all, I believe it was just more of a curiosity thing of who was coming in. There was only one booth open which had not been cleaned yet which was taken care of very quickly, we sat down and provided menus. The obvious choice was to order the fried chicken with a couple of sides. When we receive the food, the fried Chicken was hot, the macaroni that I got was lukewarm, and the french fries that I got were lukewarm. The flavor for the french fries was what you would expect, and the macaroni I actually liked the flavor, however the issue that I had was the temperature. Now on to the chicken itself. The chicken was okay. I was not a fan of the actual breading of the chicken. It was too thin however the chicken was not soggy when you buy into it. And the flavor of it was slightly bland. The chicken that we had at the festival at the restaurant by comparison was crunchy and a thicker breading which is something that I am used to when it comes to fried chicken. The seasoning with the other restaurant was significantly better. I was really looking forward to eating here. The staff were friendly and fairly attentive. Unfortunately another negative to this experience was about 20 minutes later we had to find a bathroom which we did not have when we went to the other restaurant. We both had to go at the same time which immediately told us that it was the food at this restaurant. I'm glad we went there to try it out, however I don't think we'll be returning.

We had visited Montpelier on a Monday planning to go out to lunch afterwards. I searched Google and found this restaurant not too far away. We love to eat at small local places this restaurant did not disappoint us. Wow! Amazing food. We saw food being brought to a neighboring table, it looked delicious. My sister and I both ordered the fried chicken (white meat) with corn pudding, I had the collard greens she had green beans. My husband ordered chicken and waffles. Our food arrived steaming hot…the coating was so good and crisp that it shattered when I bit it. Holy Moly, delicious! The meat was moist, hot and flavorful. The collards were good and the corn pudding was almost like dessert. The waffle was very good; no mix involved, the same crispy coating on the chicken tenders. We were recognized as not being regulars by our server who let one of the owners know. She came over and introduced herself and asked how we liked the food. Then a man came from the back and introduced himself as a partner, again thanking us for coming. We told him how good the food was and he said it was the food he grew up with…we said you could taste the love. If you are in the area try this spot, it’s a simple casual storefront, nothing fancy, just good home cooking. We are planning another trip!

I don't like writing bad reviews, I understand it can hurt a business. So I don't write this lightly. The restaurant is dirty. The saltshaker was covered in sticky grimy something. The floors haven't been washed. Dust was hanging from the light by the register and the Pepsi fridge that is visible also was covered in dust/ grime. That is all what was visible when you sitdown. The staff was nice! However I watched them pickup dirty dishes and something off the floor, never wash their hands and then handout new plates of food to other patrons.

I had Coopers cater my Thanksgiving meal this year..I had the most delicious Ham I have ever sat down with..The green beans and collards brought back memories of my grandparents cooking on a wood stove..I've can not remember having better sweet potatoes..And then there was the corn pudding..I ordered 2 large pans that knowing family members would want to take some home..After the family ate there was plenty of everything to take to their homes.. The conversation continued on the phone over a week after Thanksgiving about how Great the meal was..The butcher whom prepared the ham for cooking knew how to impress..After removing ham off bone the bone was the right size for the pot of white beans to come.. I had just been introduced to Cooper's one meal prior to placing the Thanksgiving order.. I picked up meal the day before Thanksgiving.. Everything was properly double wrap and made the hour long ride home without losing a drop.. My family and guest still talk about Cooper's Catering our meal.. I would like to thank all involved at Cooper's Cooking and Catering for creating memories at our dinner table..It was a Joy ! Wish Y'all Happy Holidays

We had the BEST experience with Coopers when deciding on a caterer for our 50th High School reunion in September. From the first contact with Denise, right down to the set up, service and FABULOUS food. They kept in close contact and were by far the best price. We are still getting positive comments on the quality of the food. They even decorated a cake for part of the desserts offered. THANK YOU, Coopers!! If you are in need, this is the place to contact!!
