Disappointing and uncomfortable experience
My dad and I visited Coopmanhuijs on 24 December and had a very uncomfortable experience. When we arrived, staff were hesitant to serve us, explaining that the chef was busy preparing for Christmas Eve. We were told they could serve us, but the hesitation was clear, and my dad even asked if they were sure.
After being seated and ordering drinks, the waiter asked if we could please only order a salad because the chef “didn’t want to cook.” Wanting to avoid being a burden, I ordered a salad and my dad chose not to order food.
About 10 minutes later, a white family of four arrived. Shortly after that, the waiter returned to our table, handed my dad the menu again, and told him he could order whatever he wanted. This inconsistency was upsetting and made the situation feel discriminatory.
At that point, we decided not to continue and asked for the bill. I was going to pay for the drinks and they needed to cancel the salad. We were told the drinks were on the house, and we left. While I appreciate that gesture, it does not undo how uncomfortable and unwelcome we felt.
In 2025, no customer should be made to feel treated differently or unwelcome. This experience was disappointing and not what we expected. I would not recommend this place as a person of colour, in 2025 we should not be dealing with this.
