This place used to be so good...
The staff save this hotel. Excellent customer service, housekeeping was unobtrusive and did a great job, and everyone I encountered was very friendly.
As for the rest, I'm less than impressed. I've stayed here at the Copthorne Wellington several times over the past few years. Unfortunately, a large section of the hotel is indefinitely closed for seismic proofing. I understand this can't be helped, and they are simply adhering to local laws by doing so, but a heads up would have been nice. I saw no mention of this on their website, pre- and post-booking, nor in any email comms. The entrance from Oriental Parade is unwelcoming and, for someone who has stayed before, unexpected as a result.
The reception - which used to be located at the Oriental Parade entrance - has now relocated to Level 7. To say it is a makeshift reception desk is an understatement. It is basically in the bar area, replete with random desk drawers and other office equipment.
The room itself was basically as expected, albeit a little tired. Not sure what would have happened had I booked the more premium, ocean view rooms that are now closed, as they seem to still be bookable through the website. Based on what I have paid for previous bookings, the general disrepair of the hotel wasn't reflected in the price this time around either.
Such a shame as I used to love this place for the ease to the nearby conference centre and unbearable views of the harbour. I might have a different view now had the website clearly stated the ongoing work and how that impacts the overall experience, but it didn't, so my expectations versus reality were two different things in this case. I wouldn't rule out staying again once the work is complete, but I would certainly look around for better options in future until then.
