If I could give this place a 6/5 I would. Everything I ordered was perfection. I ordered the Carnitas and my wife ordered the catch of the day along with some appetizers and drinks. There was nothing we tasted that wasn't better than almost everything we've previously had in n the island. We sat next to a couple that explained they come here for vacation every year and make it part of their mission to visit this restaurant because of how outstanding the food is. They have a vast array of different hot sauces for all the spice lovers and if you come on a special day you can potentially catch the chefs homemade one time only concoctions.

Google
Small, charming, lovely place for an excellent meal. Make reservations! We had the catch of the day served over yucca. This will make you very happy. Also the blackened shrimp with mole was quite good. The brownie with raspberry sauce was quite scrumptious. The cocktails were fun. This was the best meal in Vieques. Seriously, go here at least once. The service is great.

Google
Best meal I had on the island! Lucked out by snagging a bar spot last minute so you’ll definitely want to make a reservation if you’re in a group. The bartender and staff made us feel right at home. Ordered the carnitas and enchiladas which seemed like simple dishes, but they were packed with flavor! It is reasonably priced and you get large portions. Their homemade hot sauces were served as a tasting flight with dinner and are available to buy online so you can always have a kick of Coqui Fire in your own home kitchen. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Google
If you are looking for whitewashed Mexican food this is the place for you. Everything was bland and non authentic. I live in Northern California and I am blessed with excellent authentic Mexican food restaurants everywhere, this is definitely not aauthentic. To begin, the rice was basmati, the mole sauce for the enchiladas was ground up black beans, no cocoa or spices, and the chicken was flavorless. Just to make things worse, our hostess is waiting for us as we walk in and in a heavy German or Nordic accent instructs us to walk in and as we walk, stop at a podium, quickly take a picture of the menus and then hurry to the back of the restaurant to our table. Very precise and militaristic. Finally, dessert options straight from Costco, Reese's Cheesecake! Next time I am in Vieques I will make a point of avoiding this place. Not for me.

Google
From the outside the place doesn’t look anything special, and we were very cautious to eat there, as days before I had very bad food poisoning resulting in stomach sickness, diarrhea, 3-day fever, and skin rash (I even visited Vieques emergency room)… but there was not many places open on Jan 1, so we decided to give it try given the reviews. And oh my - it tremendously exceeded our expectations. We ordered Coqui salad which was simple, fresh, and healthy. My boyfriend ordered blackened shrimp and I got catch of the day - pan seared tuna. The food was tender and flavorful. After 10 days in Vieques it was one of the best meals we had on the island. And the staff were very friendly. And my stomach seems to be more than ok 😊 highly recommend!!

Google
A fantastic find after a day of exploring beaches and the island. Their menu had plenty of labeled vegetarian options and was easily customizable. We loved sampling their hot sauce, though sadly, it wasn’t carry-on friendly. The chips, salsa, and guac were outstanding, and the drinks were unique and delicious. We tried the veggie burrito and salad, which were both excellent, while a friend raved about the chicken taco. The only letdown was the carrot cake with an oat-based layer—it wasn’t great. Overall, the food was fresh, flavorful, and worth the visit. A must-try spot in Vieques!

Google
Friendly staff. Delicious food. Enjoyed tasting their hot sauces, although I wished they would sell them at the restaurant. Do recommend making a reservation, they are popular!

Google
Not for tourist families. We arrived in the island on Friday afternoon, this restaurant had great reviews and we were looking forward to trying it. We didn't have a reservation given they were closed over the weekend and were turned away with our family of four( kids 7 &9) at opening to an empty restaurant because we "didn't have a reservations". Kat a Coqui fire is expecting a "text" or call to the number she doesn't answer during closing. Good luck. We ended up having a lovely dinner across street at the accommodating and delicious El plaza.

Yelp
Outstanding restaurant on Vieques - it was by far our best meal and dining experience during our December 2022 family vacation trip. My wife, two teenage sons (17 yrs, 15 yrs), and I came here on Friday at 5pm with a reservation. At first, the exterior does not look promising based on its location in downtown Isabel Segunda. But once you walk in, the professional service and attention to detail will hit you. The sauces are delightful, including homemade salsa and guacamole (be sure to order the chips and salsa appetizer). But I devoured the catch of the day (fresh grilled grouper fillet with a creamy polenta). My wife and sons enjoyed their halibut special and burritos, respectively. The sangria was lovely. Although we were full, my wife decided to order and share one dessert (the cheesecake) - which was also excellent. Overall, I thought Coqui Fire Care was the best overall dining experience on the island of Vieques. Professional service, delightful sauces, and a little extra attention to detail that seems to be missing from other restaurants on the island which have a "hit or miss" quality to dishes. If you are visiting the island of Vieques for the first time, be sure to make a dinner reservation here (preferably for your last or penultimate evening). You'll be glad that you did! The only minor blemish is that deafening noise from the road (e.g., cars that blast loud reggaeton music or trucks) can be overwhelming as the restaurant is near a major intersection. But the noise is not the fault of the restaurant.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Imagine my surprise when viewing the menu for the "coqui fire cafe" and I am seeing only Mexican food. And the people cooking it are white as the day is long I respect anyone hustling on this island and contributing to the economy... however this just feels offensive. You need to change the name of your place, full stop. It is ridiculous for you to be using a native, sacred animal of PR to pose as an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. Change your name to "The Bistro of the Tide" or some shit and serve us chicken tenders and burgers, if you want to be honest with your customers. Everyone knows there are a lot of gringos on Vieques, but at what point do we draw the line..? Shall we start referring to mashed potatoes as mofongo?

Kay W.

Yelp
Great staff, ambience and excellent cuisine. We ended up going twice in one week. One of the best places to dine.

Maureen S.

Yelp
We bought some of their hot sauce when we got to the island, just because hubby likes to have some for his meals (I don't think I'm THAT bad of a cook!) and he likes to try other brands. Especially when they're local. Well, it was so tasty we were trying to figure out how to get some home. Could we mail it? Well, we can order it. But, we discovered, we could also visit a restaurant these folks had! What a pleasant surprise. But they were closed for several days. We were able to go the day before we left. Wonderful welcome. Cozy atmosphere. Excellent service. Yummy food. And the margarita was excellent, also. I've never had one with heat like that! (It had some of their hot sauce in it.) Yes, if we're back in Vieques we will visit this place again.

Yelp
First off, let me say do not judge by my photos from this night. They don't do it justice. The place wasn't fancy, but had a great energy. We walked up to the door where we met both the husband and wife owners and the husband quickly made a "dad joke" upon greeting us. Made us feel immediately at home. There was another woman who served us who was an angel as well. Shortly after we sat the husband owner came up to personally THANK US for coming. Felt like I was in his living room (in the best way!). One thing - please do yourself a favor and get the carnitas with flour tortilla wraps, rice, beans. So much flavor. Chef's kiss if you are looking for a family feel and a home cooked Mexican meal in Vieques.

Courtney E.

Yelp
Well... we came on a Friday to try their famed steak night. I even texted making sure they were doing the Friday steak special. We arrived at 6:45 and they were sold out of the special already. Ok, we got drinks and and appetizer anyway. The drinks were decent, the "queso fundido with chorizo" was more tomatoes than anything else, but we still enjoyed it. The woman at the door who I assume was the owner or manager tried very hard to deter us from sitting outdoors. We assured her we wanted to. The back outdoor space is very nice. She was worried about rain, which we looked at the radar and knew wasn't coming for at least 12 hours. As we were leaving she felt the need to come back and tell us she was sure it was raining on the other end of the island and we just missed it. Not a rain drop in sight. Odd.

Yelp
Coqui is a sweet little casa restaurant. It has a small dining room, best for groups or 2 and 4. The service was attentive. The food was pretty and felt authentic. This place was better than lazy Jacks and Tin Box. Just one family's opinion. Location is right aside a little town square. Lovely.

Meghan Sarah J.

Yelp
One of the islands best restaurants hands down. The staff is so pleasant, the food is exceptional, and the drinks were delish. I will be back here everytime I visit.

Zinna S.

Yelp
Came without a reservation on a Wednesday night and were greeted by the friendly owners (one of whom was wearing snazzy pants covered in images of hot sauce bottles). It was pretty busy but we were seated right away in the back patio. Appreciated that they provided mosquito spray just in case though we didn't notice any bugs. The food was really good! Steak in the quesadilla was perfectly cooked (not too chewy) and the cheese was delicious. The "salsa" that comes with it tasted more like marinara so we asked for hot sauce. They have a variety of delicious home made hot sauces - must try! Our waitress brought us a sampling for the table due to differences in spicy preference. The tuna taco was also delicious and the chicken enchilada was ok, lacking a bit in flavor. Margaritas were yummy, the spicy one is truly spicy. Cheesecake is a must! Very unique they incorporate hot sauce into the dessert as well. Overall excellent customer service and good food

Miller P.

Yelp
The food was good quality! I had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce, beans and rice. My husband had the tacos. Great value, service and yummy casual food. Make a reservation.

Mark A.

Yelp
Appear to only be open weeknights. We popped in as they opened on a Friday, without a reservation. The hostess said they were fully booked, I asked if they could squeeze us in, as we were just grabbing a quick bite before heading off. Thankfully they were able to accommodate, and we were true to our word, ordered and nommed swiftly. I ordered the pork fajitas, my wife ordered carnitas (braised pork shoulder). Both were delicious, service was great, and the prices very reasonable. Would recommend giving them a try if you're on the island

sonia v.

Yelp
We had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce and a side of black mole. My son had the burrito with steak. He loved his food as well as I did. Definitely best meal I've had since in PR. I can tell they have a great chef who cares about his plates

Ed D.

Yelp
Another review hit the nail on the head. Reservation everyday all day? I felt an arrogance trying to come in without a reservation with kids. I wonder if other reviews were right and all the good ratings are simply confirmation bias. I can't say yes or no, but that's my guess.

Shawn S.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great ambience. Make sure to call 1st and get a reservation any night since its small. Filet mignon was really flavorful and tender. The carne asada was also tender and flavorful. The grouper special was amazing, and the drinks were really good. Our waitress was very nice and helpful explaining the different options. Their hot sauces are really good, and she took her time explaining them to our teens and helping them pick some that weren't too hot. She brought out a few options and served them to my son like getting wine at a vineyard noting the different flavors of each. This isn't necessarily the place to bring young kids since its small and they dont have a children's menu, but they have plain cheese quesadillas if you have someone thats not a very adventurous eater.

Cathy M.

Yelp
Mexican food that is nothing to write home about. Drinks are well priced and tasted good. Service was a bit odd. Overbearing and disorganized. Too many people (though good intentioned) wandering about. Menu was rather bland. Would be a good option for families with children.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Great food, great service. Walked in without a reservation, didn't seem to be a problem as other reviews have stated, but there was only two of us. Will definitely be back on our next trip to Vieques.

Mollie W.

Yelp
Coqui Fire was on my Yelp Collection of restaurants to try while visiting Vieques and it did not disappoint! My group wanted to grab dinner before our bioluminescent bay tour so we showed up at Coqui Fire without a reservation, with limited time, and without one mask. Lucky for us, a group about our size with a reservation was a no show. We were seated right away after a mask was kindly provided to one of us and after we showed our Covid19 vaccination cards and got our hands sanitized. Our server, Mia, was amazing! She was understanding about our needing to eat and run to our tour so she kept things moving along nicely. We all began with delicious margaritas and appetizers. Off to a good start, we then dove right into the carnitas with rice and beans, house salads, and shrimp. The food was very flavorful and so good that we all want to return. Mia was talking us into the housemade cheesecake so we are looking forward to that on our next visit. Five big Yelp stars here for such a warm welcome into a great restaurant with great staff.

Dimary C.

Yelp
I'm in loved with their cheesecakes Cherry almond cayenne, but carnitas with a hint of tamarind sauce and the spicy margaritas.

Sheryl T.

Yelp
They have vegetarian burritos, and that was nice. And like everyone says the cheesecake was to die for. Service was fast and pleasant!

D N.

Yelp
Super fresh fish, innovative flavors, cooked with care. Not pretentious, Excellent service. Definitely worth a dinner date while you're on vacation.

Yelp
Most interesting and satisfying meal we've had on Vieques so far... Tuesday is a down night in Esperanza, so we headed to Isabel II. Met at the door by the edict that plaid shirts were not acceptable at the bar (I got an exception: Dad gave it to me many years ago). The bar was lovely, bartender was helpful, fun, and efficient I had the Carne Asada, every succeeding bite introduced a bit more complexity. Sangria was also very good. Felt like a good value, as well. I'd go back next time we're here Just a really nice vibe paired with very good food...

Ai L.

Yelp
We had a fantastic meal at Coqui Fire on Friday night! We arrived expecting Mexican food, but it was Date Night snd so the menu was very different! We started off with the caprese salad, which was fresh and delicious. I had the seared yellow fin tuna with grilled romaine lettuce and my boyfriend had the steak with fig, cream sauce and peppercorn sauce. We finished our meal with the flourless chocolate cake, which was absolutely delicious! It was chewy, crunchy and soft all in one bite! We finished everything on our plate! We will definitely be back! I also need to mention the wonderful service! Everyone from the hostess, waitress fo the chef himself were so professional, kind and super nice! The chef and owner came out to thank us for coming and he was super sweet and humble. And a fabulous chef!! We seriously loved our experience and can't wait to go back when we are next in Vieques!

Dave F.

Yelp
The sauces chef Jimmy creates was what started the restaurant. Sauces gave birth to the restaurant. Mahi with one style of mole and blackened shrimp with a coconut mole. All mole house made. Will be back - recommended.

Stacey V.

Yelp
Hands down our best meal on the island! Reservations are def needed. We started with chips and salsa, may sound lame but it also came with guacamole and was so good and fresh. The shrimp and grits were unlike any I have had before and I am a shrimp and grits snob. It was recommended by our very gracious server. My husband had the carnitas which he said were outstanding as well. They offered lemon cheesecake for dessert and make sure to get a slice if they offer this! Drinks were priced WAY better than anywhere else and that is so appreciated. So glad we went.

G P.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. Serivice was friendly and spot on. Cute local place which we throughly enjoyed

Sanjay A.

Yelp
One of the best shrimp I ever tasted in my life!!! Outstanding margaritas. Don't miss this one if you visit vieques... absolutely don't miss this..

Trey C.

Yelp
Got yelled at for...walking in the restaurant. Guy didn't have a mask, but clearly was very COVID scared. I say that, as opposed to COVID safe, as (if you check the date of this review), vaccines are clearly available and it was an open air cafe. Many of the original Puerto Rican folks seem to be pretty laid back and friendly, but this guy - clearly not from here - was just incensed that 3 people would walk into a restaurant to spend money. It's usually folks that move in that contribute to gentrification, dilution of culture, and uprightness. This guy seemed like no exception. No thanks.

Curtis H.

Yelp
We ate at a couple restaurants on Vieques that had decent reviews, but were disappointed with the food. Some lacked taste and others were too salty. Many of the best rated places are closed earlier in the week. This place was an awesome surprise after the other meals. We are a bit of a foody family and have had our share of Mexican, and this place had some of the best Mexican we've ever had, from the enchiladas to the burritos to the grouper special and creme brule. The hostess (owner?) and server were very friendly, accommodating, and attentive. It had a nice atmosphere, with a hybrid indoor/outdoor setup.

Jeff F.

Yelp
Our first night ever on the island and we ate at Coqui Fire Cafe. What a delightful experience! The service was outstanding and the food delish! Highly recommend if you have the chance!

Leah S.

Yelp
We were recommended this restaurant by the person who rented the house in which we are staying. I was told to order the catch of the day or the special and the Cuban taco as an appetizer. As there were three of us we opted for the special which was a filet mignon, the catch of the day which was a mahi-mahi over polenta. Our other guest ordered blackened shrimp over polenta with mole sauce. I wish I could remember the sauces that were ov r the fish and the filet mignon because they were both incredible. The fish, shrimp and beef were perfectly cooked. The sauces for the fish and the beef were not spicy but had a teeny-tiny kick and I have a really "white" palate. My friend who is Cajun said the blackened shrimp wasn't really blackened (to me they were slightly sweet and really succulent) desert was a cheesecake that was mixed with cassava (I think) with dulce de Leiche- I would totally eat here again.

Tom B.

Yelp
The one place you have to go in Vieques. Chef driven with full flavors and a beautiful ambiance. The owners Kat and Jimmy are a couple of gems that worth the conversation if they are not too busy.

William G.

Yelp
We had a wonderful Valentines meal here all of us felt that this is by far the best dining experience thus far on the island. Highly recommended the flavors are outstanding from the drinks to entrées to the appetizers. Highly recommend it.

Adam S.

Yelp
I wish I could give Coqui Fire fifteen stars; one for each amazing bottle of hot sauce that I tried. The hot sauces range from sweet and spicy to downright spicy and have such an amazing flavor that we had to take a few bottles home. In some ways, this seems like THE spot to go on the north part of the island, Isabel Segunda. We had heard so much from Yelp reviews, people we talked to, etc. that we made a reservation and had a much anticipated dinner on a Monday night, seeing as how they give their employees the weekends off. First thing: ALL THE HOT SAUCES! Seriously. They put them in their margaritas (if you want), on chips, and even work their spices in on their cheesecake. That's pretty amazing. The place has a real friendly vibe. I'm talking a summery, open, relaxed and delicious-smelling vibe. We started with the nachos and they disappeared quickly we were so hungry and they were very good. I had to try the patented pork shoulder for my entree and you can tell the chef understandings the complexities of various flavors well. It was so good. We were stuffed. Roll us out of there stuffed. For some reason, chalk it up to it being vacation, we decided to double down and push our cards in for dessert. The staff recommendation? An almond-cherry-cayenne cheesecake. It didn't sound good to me at all so I was glad I wouldn't gorge on dessert. How wrong I was, this was so dang good. The flavors came in three waves and it was different than any other cheesecake I've ever tasted. So yes, you'll hear great things about this place if you are on Vieques or searching on Yelp and the only thing left is to make a reservation and try it out.

Evelyn C.

Yelp
This is our family's absolute favorite place to eat in Vieques! The food and drinks are totally delicious and the vibe is welcoming and down to earth. Their new digs are spacious and the top floor roof deck is great for watching the Vieques night sky! A trip to Vieques isn't complete without a trip to Coqui Fire! (p.s. pick up some of their hot sauces if you're checking your luggage)

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Amazing! Sat at the bar and I know it's weird but they had the most delicious ice water I've ever had in my life. Was it the heat? Was it the hot sauce? Was it just the water? I don't know but I want more. Margaritas were fabulous. Wanted to drink them all but I'm not at that stage of my life where I can. Food was incredible-appetizers, mains and you have GOT to stay for dessert. Chef even came out to say hi to regulars and stopped by to make sure our food was hitting right. The hostess was also fabulous and made sure we had everything we needed. Made sure to grab some sauce to take home and am almost out even though I was there in April. Clearly time to go back!

nancy c.

Yelp
Best meal on our two week trip to Vieques. We went twice because first dinner was so good. Carnitas and tacos are fabulous as are margaritas. Be sure to make reservation in advance; they are not open on weekends.

Megan B.

Yelp
Wow...we had a 3 course meal simply because everything was so good we wanted to try more. Service was great, sauces were great. Owner and waiters are all really friendly. They let you pick your sauce so you control how spicy you want it. They have a ton to choose from so we had fun making different combinations. Small menu so you know they put a lot into each dish. Best food on the island

John P.

Yelp
Two different days I went to eat at this restaurant there was a sign that said there was a family emergency. I can't comprehend how one family emergency would keep the entire establishment closed, not making money, for two days.

Shelly B.

Yelp
Highly recommend! We enjoyed dinner - the food was delicious! I had the shrimp, the owner's speciality. It was out of this world! The spicy margs we're the best I've ever had. The service was superb. Literally had the most gracious hostess, the owner personally checked with us to make sure all was good & the wait staff was attentive, kind & funny. By far, our best dining experience!

Andrew D.

Yelp
This restaurant was OUTSTANDING. The owner, chef, staff, and food were the best we had during our visit on Vieques. I would HIGHLY recommend this place. Best food on the island that was found. Authentic, made with good quality ingredients, and local knowledge of the island. Don't miss this restaurant .

V N.

Yelp
Lovely staff and thoughtful food! Excellent ambiance, I found the environment quite quaint and Charming

Priya G.

Yelp
Pretty incredible service. The vibe, and food is solid. If you are vegetarian there are plenty of options. The people ard kind and welcoming, a refreshing vibe juxtaposed against the rest of our trip. The owner was texting my husband about our 8:30 reservations for weeks until we got there at 8:55 because we couldn't get taxis on the island (they close at 9, so it was kind of them to let us dine there, and reserve your car rentals way in advance). A lovely European woman woman and her husband run this joint- and it's run damn well. Try the hot sauces (15 is FIRE!) Get dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Lauren G.

Yelp
Excellent service. Every single employee was incredibly friendly. Following all Covid guidelines and protocol. Delicious drinks - our table had margaritas, sangria and beer all of which were delicious. And most notably, the food is INCREDIBLE. Everything we got was fantastic. Pictured here is the Catch of the Day which was grouper with mexican grits and red mole. I ate every bite. Make sure you get a dish with the mole, it is the best I've ever had. Our table also got steak burrito and the carnitas, both of which are highly recommended. A MUST GO-TO IN VIEQUES!!! We will absolutely be back!

Linda S.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, delicious food, and excellent COVID protocols- what's not to like? I had the tuna with red mole sauce- flavorful without being too spicy.

M B.

Yelp
Great hole-in-the wall place. The service was very good and the food was excellent. My Mexican wife was impressed also. Nice fresh, local ingredients...not easy to find on Vieques. We had a burrito that was delicious and fajitas that were very good. We'll definitely be back when we're fortunate enough to be on the island again.

Eric W.

Yelp
As a sign designer, I hesitated when I saw the place... but this turned out to be a beautiful "don't judge a book by the cover" situation. The Coqui Fire Margarita was perfect, I requested a medium heat level and then had them turn it up a notch on the second one which was absolute perfection. The queso fundido con chorizo starter was delicious, with the perfect ratio of (what I assume was) house made chips. I have no idea how we got lucky enough to have Ahi Tuna as the "catch of the day" and a filet mignon as a special but it happened... and it was the best meal of the trip and the best meal in long (think Covid NYC) time. Wait, did I mention the staff and atmosphere? As good or better than the food.

Angelique D.

Yelp
Definitely get a reservation here if you're in Vieques!! The food is delish and beautifully prepared. Definitely get the mango cheesecake if you're there during mango season! The service was so kind, attentive, and welcoming, my friend and I had a GREAT time and can't wait to be back.

Stacy W.

Yelp
Very good food great staff very welcoming! Extremely satisfied. Tried their signature fish had the best sauce. Friend had a chicken quesadilla & really enjoyed it. 10/10.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Amazing food, ambiance, service, and drinks. I had the coqui fire Margarita - just enough kick. The veggie fajitas and veggie burrito were fabulous. Very fresh. The sangria was a little weak. The owners were lovely conversationalists. The ambiance was great for any group.
