Being from the south, I know what soul food is and this ain't it.
Before I go on with my review, I would like to share that I did ask for a manager before we left and was told that there was none on site. There seemed to be 3 people working there, 2 waiters and one cook(we saw the person walk from the back and out of the establishment then back in). If anyone else was back there, we didn't see them.
My husband and I dined in around 6 pm on Saturday March 23. My husband seated himself while I used the restroom. The waiter came brought us drinks and took an appetizer order of frog legs and the gravy fries. We wanted to look over the menu a tad bit longer.
We noticed 4 other tables seated. A party of four, 2 parties of two aside from us, and one single guy. So five tables all together. Everyone had drinks. We were the last ones in
Waiter comes back and we put our order in for Platter One. It included one chop, 2piece fried chicken, choice of fish (we chose catfish), 3 sides (we chose Mac n cheese, greens, yams) and bread (we chose cornbread) for $29.99. We can split this and it should be fine. It's enough for two ppl. Right? We ask about deserts, no deserts left.
Ok! Order in. We see everyone who was there before us talking and sipping and no one is receiving food. Over 20 mins pass and we have no appetizer. The single guy gets his food. We over here the other waiter (waitress) telling him something about the bread. I'm praying that she isn't talking about the cornbread.
Our waiter comes to let us know, they're out of cornbread. I'm blowed. I had my heart and mind set on corn bread mixed with all the other sides and some hot sauce. Best combo ever right? Not today. I'm good though, no reaction, I can work with hush puppies I think.
We and everyone are still waiting. I see the table of four concerned about not having food. Our waiter tells them "oh, they have a lot of food to make." Or something like that. The woman looks around the room for the as if to say "where?" It's been about 45 mins to an hour and the guy who has gotten his food leaves. We still don't have our frog legs and fries.
Then the waitress (not our waiter) comes over and asks, "did he tell you all what's going on?" No. "There's been some malfunctioning in the back and it's holding things up." We tell her about our frog legs and fries. "We'll have them up soon." I overhear the waitress tell the other table that there was a first that caused the delay. I didn't smell smoke but ok.
Another 15 mins we get the frog legs and fries. Frog legs were okay. The fries however... a piece of fried okra was in the gravy. My husband hates okra but I ate it. That's ok. What was bad was that the fries were dark in color and tasted refried and old. Gravy was super salty. We sent them back. Waited til around 7:30 to get our entry. No Mac n cheese on the platter. I'm blowed when he says they're out of Mac n cheese.
FIRST OF ALL! Nobody has gotten food but one person. If that person did in fact have Mac n cheese, you knew that there was only enough for him and that there was none left an hour ago because no one else ate! Same with the cornbread. I could've ordered something else! I wanted all of what I ordered! I was ready for what I ordered not all these substitutes. Chop was salty, greens bland, I don't know how when you have turkey in it. Yams tasted like they were from a can. Pinto beans my husband substituted for Mac n cheese were just as salty as everything else and the portions were like 1/4 cup for a platter with a bunch grease on it. Catfish salty. I love fried chicken skin, but this was salty and hard as if refried. We paid over $40 for our meal plus tip. I wanted this to be good so bad but it wasn't at all. This must be a franchised location. Cannot be authentic. It just can't be. SMH
To the owner, don't come on here defensive, just do better. If you can't handle late hours and run out of food because of the supposed rush from earlier in the day, close earlier around 4. Ppl will thank you for it. You'll probably make more money and waste less of it and food.
