A Lifelong Student – On Surfing, Mentorship, and the Pursuit of Growth
After more than 30 years building and managing an asset management business, one truth has become more clear to me than ever: the most successful people I know are the ones who never stop learning.
A mentor of mine once asked me a powerful question that has stuck with me:
“What in your life are you currently a beginner at?”
It’s a question that reveals whether you still embrace a growth mindset—no matter your age, accomplishments, or stage of life.
Six or seven years ago, I decided to become a beginner again. In my late 40s, I took up surfing—something I had admired from afar but never dared to try. The learning curve was steep (still is), but the process of learning something completely new, humbling and physical, has been nothing short of transformational. The ocean has a way of teaching patience, humility, and presence. The focus and clarity I’ve gained in the water have made me a better investor, a better leader, and a better human.
Along this journey, I’ve had the great fortune of being guided by the team at Coreyswave in Montauk. What started as surf instruction quickly became a source of mentorship, friendship, and inspiration. Corey, Kevin, Gavin & Kristen—and so many others—have been incredible teachers. They’ve helped me push through my limits and stay engaged in the art of learning. I'm deeply grateful to be part of this community.
To my friends and others reading this —many of whom are likely high achievers and lifelong learners—I highly recommend you ask yourself that same question:
What are you doing in your life right now that you're still a beginner at?
And if you ever find yourself near Montauk, consider a surf lesson with Coreyswave. You might just find it does more than teach you how to ride waves—it may open up a whole new perspective on life, learning, and leadership.
Thank you Coreyswave!
