NYC Chefs Recommend the Best Affordable Restaurants

"A classic, old-school burger joint prized for its unfussy approach: come ready to order, pay cash, and enjoy a bistro burger with fries and a beer. The place is beloved for its straightforward comfort food (and a persistent rumor that the fries are cooked in beef fat)." - Nikita Richardson

The Corner Bistro has been open since the mid80s but still maintains a very modern and pleasant neighborhood ambiance. We went on a busy Friday night. Outside, there was a roaring fire and seating. After a bit of a wait, we were seats in a beautifully decorated dining room. Food was fantastic, though sides were a bit small. Staff, though super busy, didn't act rushed and didn't try to convey a "hurry up" attitude to us - this is good! My apricot salmon and scallops were terrific. They have many gluten free items, but sadly, no gluten free deserts!

Google
Cozy little restaurant, had to wait for a table but was allowed to order a drink while waiting! Apps and dinner were good!

It was our 5yr anniversary and were looking for a new spot to try out. I have driven by the Corner Bistro when I go to killingly ct, always wondered when they open and if the food was delicious. I was looking at Google reviews and photos and figured lets do it. I'm definitely glad we made the choice, the food was delicious and good portions so we have leftovers. The bread they gave out was super fresh with oil. The wife got the breaded chicken Parm and I got fettuccine with grilled chicken, mushrooms and asparagus. Our sides came with soup which looked good but I got the ceaser, it was extra but it was delicious. If you are in the area check this spot out. I'm going back. Oh one last thing, I never had a waitress ask if I had any allergies to any food coming out so it was a plus. 👍👍👍👍👍

Google
Had an amazing dinner. The owner and all the staff were warm and friendly. The Veal Marsala was awesome. The Chicken Eggplant Parmesan was wife's choice, and it was literally hanging off the plate. I will recommend this to anyone.

Debra W.

Google
Very cute place, first time here, food was good, staff.was polite, tables are a bit to close together but we had a corner table. Our pasta dishes where a bit expensive, but also large portions, just way to much food for me. Did take a long time for our food to arrive. All in all, worth a end visit.

Nicole P.

Google
My family and I have tried to eat here before but the wait to sit was over an hour. We arrived a few minutes before they opened. We were greeted by a friendly host and was seated. We ordered our drinks and food and it came out quickly. The apple cider sangria was very good. I was surprised by the size of the chicken parm, it was huge, but not that good. There were 5 baked stuffed shrimp but the stuffing was missing something. They were more like pancakes on top of the shrimp. We ordered my son the kids chicken and fries and the chicken was actual chicken breast filet thin and fried. The fudge cake was very dry. I'm glad we tried this place for ourselves because we heard a lot about it. The service was great and the bus girl was very friendly.

Google
Veal and chicken parmigiana were absolutely awesome. Best marinara sauce and delicious chicken soup and pasta fagioli. Will return very soon. Busy little restaurant so try to get there early. ❤️

Google
What an amazing place. Great atmosphere and wonderful staff! The veal sorento was absolutely delicious! The pasta fagioli, the calamari, the bread, the potatoes and veggies... all 100% fantastic.

Yelp
We try to go every week. The food is excellent. The waitresses are good and friendly. They often say hello to us even when they are not our waitress.

Janice L.

Yelp
This is my all-time favorite restaurant and not just because I live not far from it! The food is out of this world and the atmosphere is absolutely wonderful.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
We love the atmosphere and the food. Only meal I have ever had here is their Salmon. I am person of habit. If it's good, why change ? Though I do get it with Angel Hair pasta rather than the risotto that normally comes with it.

Lucin L.

Yelp
Zero... Rude staff doesn't begin to explain it. Customers came in and she/server was like, so glad you came in to see me. We did not come in to see her. She was rude. I chose not to eat. It was that bad... she ruined our evening. I go out to relax and enjoy not cooking. She made me feel I was there for them. This place used to be busy. Guess what. No wait. Now I know why. See ya..

Yelp
This used to be my favorite restaurant, fairly close to home. The food is decent however we've noticed that portions are smaller (prices are higher),only offer soup now -no salad, and you have to ask for a bread basket (sometimes). I must say the service/servers are excellent! It's a cute quaint place. However, the acoustics are horrible. My husband has a significant hearing loss and when we go there we ask for a particular table that is sort of off the beaten path, not in the middle of the room, so that we can have a conversation without yelling at one another. Well, we went there last weekend and asked for our usual table. We were greeted by the owner's wife with such an attitude because we didn't want to sit where she wanted us to. I explained our situation and she became visibly and verbally annoyed with our request. We should have turned around and left. I guess I have to find a new favorite restaurant...

Yelp
RUDE STAFF!!! DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME!! Wanna be Italian restaurant. Went to try it since we were driving by. The hostess is truly the most unwelcoming snot I've ever encountered in the restaurant business. Then we had a drink at the bar. The man behind the bar had the personality of a tree stump. It was obvious he didn't like his job or people for that matter. Between him and the rude hostess with the eyeglasses, that say hey look at me, I think I'm all that,we couldn't even bring ourselves to order anything more than an appetizer and one drink, and the app was definitely jarred sauce. yuck! Never agai

Ashley A.

Yelp
i will start off on a high note; the food was excellent. Our waitress was very nice, but the owner?!!! First class b****. It was busy so we got a drink while we waited. The bar was in a different room than where you waited so it's impossible to see the liquor selection unless you walk into the main room and stand in front of the bar. She comes over and immediately tells us to wait in the other room and she will take our order Because there is no room at the bar. Well how are we supposed to order if we don't know what you have? Fast forward... we had a 4 year old with us who was telling us a story and said "no" kind of loud in a joking manner because one of us asked her a silly question... the owner turns Around and looks at her puts her finger to her mouth and says "SHHHHH" mind you not one person around us batted an eyelash because it wasn't disturbingly loud. This place Isn't the Capital Grille. It's fairly loud in there. Not fancy at all. So after she says SHHH i locked eyes in disbelief and glared at her because our 4 Yr old was not being disruptive so I looked at my party and said jokingly "she must not be Italian" She had the audacity to come over and bud in to our conversation and said "actually I am Italian" and bends over and tells my 4 year old she needs to be quiet and use her restaurant voice. I said oh do you have kids in your family and she said yes and they know how to use restaurant voices" ARE YOU KIDDING ME YOU MISERABLE HAG???? It took everything in all of us to not get up and leave And she grilled me when I walked Out. The most unprofessional business owner ive ever encountered. I am the first one to correct and discipline My kids when it's warranted. This was completely out of line. I will NEVER go back there. But I encourage everyone with small kids to go there and let them be kids. Ruin her day like she ruined our dinner. xoxo

Yelp
Best chicken parmigiana in the state! Nothing comes close. Burrata with the best homemade mozzarella again best in the state!!!!

Yelp
5 Star all the way around. Check out this sweet little gem located on the corner of Routes 101 and 102. Everything is made fresh to order. My husband loves the Chicken Josephine. I don't have a favorite, everything I've had is great. Check them out!

Samantha K.

Yelp
Our new favorite Italian restaurant! Food is exceptional, portions very generous, service great, and they are so willing to meet your wants and needs. I just wish they were open more days of the week.

Nicola L.

Yelp
Food Service and Ambiance were all on point! Fabulous! Food was fresh and cooked to perfection! Owner is the chef.

Yelp
Food is very good my major complaint is it's hours of operation. For us long time patrons (since 1993) it's POSTED hours of operation and it's posted hours on the building are false. It's a crap shoot as to when it's open and closing times. Posted closed at 7pm or 9 pm but it locks it's doors 1/2 hours before that. While I understand owner may choose any hours he wants, he should be considerate of customer who travel a distance to fet there to be turned away especially since it's location is in a rural location. I understand as a 50+ yr of working as a manager/owner of restaurants there are times when hours of operation have to be flexible like inclement weather/snow dates. Just state times correctly on building and web site and your phone as to when last customers can ENTER building. It seems inconceivable to turn away customers who drive a distance to get there unless their bottom line and customer philosophy doesn't want more customers and sales in this day and age.

Yelp
Always the best and friendly service and WONDERFUL FOOD! I recommend the Chicken Sorrento! But you'll be taking half home for lunch Wine list is good and compliments the food
google avatar

Shane L.

Yelp
I have posted a review of the food previously, and it's a winner. This time I figured they deserved a nod to their drinks. I tried the Blood Orange Martini and it was DANGEROUSLY good! Great little spot, great atmosphere, give it a go!

Pablo G.

Yelp
The corner bistro is a hidden Gem in north scituate, RI. The place is casual, the service is friendly and the food is very good. This review is based on our first time, however, we plan to return and bring friends along. The atmosphere is relaxed and amenable to conversation. We had the bolognese and the eggplant parmigiana and both dishes were excellent.
google avatar

Marcela B.

Yelp
Great drinks and food. The service was great and you'll absolutely have left overs to take home.

kristie t.

Yelp
Rude person answering the phone hung up on me . Will never go there Have some manners next time !

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! A hidden gem. You'll wait on weekends, but worth it! Best Italian outside of Federal Hill.

Roselydia ..

Yelp
This place was over rated had decent reviews and was over priced I had the mozzarella sticks to start and they were literally hot on the outside and in melted on the inside the Alfredo tasted like heavy cream and the kids Mac was like a choking hazard with the amount of cheese in it had to pick noodles out of a pound of cheese come here if you would like to eat over priced food that's nasty

Kenneth D.

Yelp
40 minutes on a Saturday evening to get a table and then 40 more minutes to get our food after ordering. Food was served at room temperature which was very disappointing. How hard can it be to cook and serve Veal Parmesan in a timely manner? The restaurant was nicely decorated and wait staff was very kind and pleasant. I give my experience a B-.

Margaret K.

Yelp
We had a large party. A few of us wanted to sit and have a drink while we waited a few mins for the other 3. The women sitting people was so rude I was actually taken back. We were told we could get a drink at the bar and stand in the waiting area. I maybe wrong, but I think she was the owner. I don't care if the food is good, will never go back!!
google avatar

Lori C.

Yelp
Ummm if you live anyplace near here this is a MUST VISIT restaurant! The food is amazing, period. The atmosphere inside is nice and the hometown feel is genuine. Karen, the owner greets every patron as the hostess. If you love homemade Italian cooking, then you will not be disappointed and i am a tough Italian critic lol!!
google avatar

Abbey J.

Yelp
I came in here last week and the food was outstanding! So flavorful and delicious! My favorite place to go
google avatar

Yelp
It's nice to get a restaurant out here in the sticks that is more than a pizza or breakfast joint. Attempted to dine here before but was too packed so we searched on. So we finally get our shot and got here early enough on a Thursday night to try this establishment. Surprisingly there was quite the selection on regular menu and the was a specials menu as well . There was tripe on the menu so I had to try it. Tripe was good, tender tasty and not just a dish of sauce. Wings in Asian sauce was ok. Nothing special. I order the squid and octopus diablo, ordered spicy to your level of preference. There was no octopus at all, I really mean none at all. Only on the menu will you see octopus. But I'm intrigue enough to try again.

Yelp
This is a little gem in what seems the middle of nowhere. A small family owned Italian restaurant with a great selection of pastas, and other Italian dishes. I had the Tuscan chicken with pink vodka sauce and my wife had the dish on the picture. We were both happy with the portions and quality of the food. They open at 4pm and people were waiting outside to get it! The prices were fair at $17-$21 average for a plate. I would go back.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
They don't take reservations and the wait was at least 45 minutes on a Saturday night. This restaurant is basically in the middle of "Nowhere!"Dining Room is one small room with a pitched roof. It got obnoxiously LOUD so that it was difficult to hear dinner conversation! The food is good; veal cutlet with a solid red sauce! Unfortunately, the loudness takes stars away for me! The Hostess seemed overwhelmed! The "regulars" definitely got preferential treatment, getting drinks in the waiting area-- which is annoying, as my money is just as good. I was not offered a drink while I waited! Bottom line--3/5 stars.

Kathie F.

Yelp
Food is always delicious, service is stellar, ppl are so friendly and accommodating, great vibes

Yelp
Go. Get the Chicken sorrento - or Fettuccini Alfredo with prawns! The salads are crisp and fresh, soups are well prepared and fresh! The food portions are enormous! Try the burrata as an appetizer! Calamari is great too! The cocktails- a HEALTHY pour on a glass of wine! cocktails are fresh and well thought! lots of top shelf spirits to make some interesting recipes and concoctions! I love the chicken Sorrento myself! But bring a good friend and a BIG appetite or you'll be eating this entree for three days LOL !!! Your husband will love it too! The staff is warm and inviting! This place is wonderful all seasons of the year- Great food, great service , great cocktails! What's not to love?!?!??!

Yelp
I can't wait to dine Inside again. This place is such a hidden gem. We have made this a weekly takeout spot and it never disappoints.

Jeanne M.

Yelp
If this could be given a zero, I would do it. I was in there. They had a toilet in the women's bathroom that was not secured to the floor, and was an accident waiting to happen. I had the misfortune of being the one the accident happened to. As I was sitting, the toilet started to tip and I ended up on the floor. A flood proceeded, and the top of the toilet shattered. I immediately told the staff, and we had already paid and tipped the server. Some guy (chef? owner?) came to the door to tell us that I had "wrecked" HIS toilet, and it was going to cost him $500. Not a word about if I was ok, when one could clearly see that there was a possibility of an injury. He then repeated that again. I was in shock, and called them back. I heard him telling the woman that I spoke to to tell me that "he'd fix it". What, who else was going to fix something that wasn't safe or secure to begin with? They also have something called insurance, although the insurance company should know it was their negligence. What kind of people are these??? This place makes plenty of money, just on booze alone. They are rude and do not deserve our, or your patronage. Disgusting and disturbing experience and they had neither the humanity or the decency to apologize. Don't go!!

Yelp
This is one of Rhode Island's hidden gems as far as great Italian Food goes! Everyone thinks that Federal Hill is the spot for great Italian food but this restaurant has NEVER let me or my family down (which is very impressive- as my mother is beyond picky)! Their gravy is seasoned to perfection which is why their chicken parmesan is beyond amazing! That's my go to meal as far as dinner goes. Everything from pasta to chicken franchise down to their calamari- and including their pizza- are ALL superb! When my entire extended family gets together this is always where we eat because it's the only place we can all agree on as being good and it is GUARANTEED to ALWAYS BE good. When there is 7 of us (including a toddler) Corner Bistro is definitely CONSISTENT to say the least. We get take-out here AT LEAST 2 x a week (sometimes more). The drive isn't that far (located in Northern Rhode Island- about 15 minutes from Scituate/Johnston). Although we typically get take out we do occasionally eat at the restaurant. As far as indoor dining the staff is great. The ambiance/decor is IS quintessential Scituate being very quaint and charming!! Karen is one of the nicest restaurant owners my family has ever come across- even going as far to offer me soup when I picked up a take out order when I was sick. Corner Bistro is also extremely accommodating and they honestly have never messed up our usually large (7+) take out order (literally can't say that for ANY OTHER RESTAURANT around because something is constantly being left out)! We have had their # on speed dial for some time! I highly recommend this restaurant- you may want to get their early on the weekend because by 6 pm their parking lot is FULL! The only time we are ever disappointed is when they are closed because they are away on Vacation!!

Yelp
Expensive We had heard really great things about the bistro and it smelled delicious walking in but to make a long story short, if you're used to really good Italian and seafood, this is average and we felt it was overpriced. It ended up costing us $70 for two people which wasn't what I was expecting. We had to ask for a bread basket even though other tables were getting them. It was getting very loud and we could barely hear each other across the table and didn't want to talk loudly, so that's a personal opinion. As soon as we got our food about three different waitresses including the hostess asked how our food was but then we were basically left alone and had to ask another waitress to find our waitress when we were ready to check out. It was clear that locals come here because the hostess and certain waitresses were paying more attention to people they knew. The dinner portions were generous and we had a lot of food to take home. We were pleased with the main dishes and the calamari was nice and light... A dipping sauce would have been nice. They had three cream pies to offer for dessert so if you like creme pies this is the place to go, apparently their desserts change so they might have something different next time. All in all it was good and I certainly won't dismiss this restaurant, but if we are hungry and down here again we will try somewhere else. We were visiting friends in Foster (there's nothing there) so we took their recommendation to come here. The bar and dining area are all contained in one small room. Anyway, it's worth trying, maybe lunch is a better and cheaper time to go. Thanks

Debra G.

Yelp
Our veal dish was perfectly cooked! Delicious as was the salad. Server was prompt and friendly. Nice, unpretentious atmosphere. A little loud but we were there on a Saturday night.
google avatar

Robin R.

Yelp
My favorite meal here is the eggplant parm. It's crispy and perfectly cooked. The most amazing thing I love about this restaurant is the food is served piping hot! That is something that doesn't happen all the time in other restaurants. The food usually sits and waits for the waitress and when you finally do get it it's kinda hot. Not here! It burns your tongue if you're not careful! I love that! The lady at the front is warm and welcoming, even when it's crowded. The place is small but very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant. I've brought every member of my family here at least once since I've discovered it. The marinara sauce is excellent!

Joseph L.

Yelp
The food is good don't get me wrong. But wait. You're not going to believe this, they charge you for them having a credit card service. I was charged 3.5% credit card charge for Corner Bistro to have a credit card machine. Don't they know that's the cost of doing business. Wow. Guess What I can give any other restaurant $150.00 Bye. Bye

Richard D.

Yelp
Overrated, the food is fair at best. Portions for what they charge you are awful. I ordered baked scrod 21.00 very small portion, as a matter of fact I was hungry went I got home. I asked for extra lemon and tartar sauce which they stated they don't not carry. Who ever heard of having fried clams or fish with no tartar to go with it. This place does everything possible to cut there costs. Charging folks 3.5% for credit card usage. A piece of advice to the owners, when you start passing your costs onto your customers then maybe its time to choose another profession. Will I go back there most likely NOT. It's a husband and wife team who owns this place and the wife is not the friendliest.

N B.

Yelp
Used to go there often but not anymore, food is Very Good and a little overpriced, but the service from the wait staff is exceptional as always and that is why we always return there. Never noticed that I was charged 3.5% credit card charge from Corner Bistro to use. I thought this was odd and got rude answers from management when questioned and yes, they pointed out a little sign on the front door with this posted and supposedly also on the menu. Who uses cash these days and the 3.5% service charge times how many meals they serve and our bills averaging over $200.00 or more, someone is making additional money here. please don't get me wrong its' not the actual cash, it was the attitude when questioned and noticed other reviews here with the same issue.
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Food is always wonderful, staff are pleasant, we love it here. Frustrating that you can't get takeout here even if your dining in and want to take something home to a family member. Wish they'd reconsider this rule.
google avatar

Bryant V.

Yelp
Arrived there at 9:32PM. Saw someone look at me through the window and lock the door. Called the number after vainly trying to get in and was told that they close at 9:30. When I said the sign says 10, she said the kitchen closes at 9:30. They should probably state that somewhere on their website or on their sign outside. So on to Pinewood Pizza... Maybe the food is good but the customer service is clearly not there.

CJ R.

Yelp
Consistently delicious! Haven't had the opportunity to dine in yet but did lots of takeout during the pandemic shut down.

Cassandra P.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and sure glad we did. It's a small place, so you probably will have to wait, but it's worth it. Fettuccine Ponta was delicious, generous portion with plenty of mushrooms, peas, and ham, cooked perfectly al dente. Prices are around average for area when it comes to Italian restaurants. Tiramisu was delicious and fresh - no old, stale cake here. We sat at the bar because it opened up first, and the bartender was friendly and quick to refill the drinks and make sure we had everything we needed to make it a good meal. They do have a surcharge for using a credit card, but it is clearly printed on the menu, so it does not come as a surprise at the end of the meal. Though not many restaurants do this, I'm starting to notice some smaller, mom and pop type places are. It isn't an issue for me, but if it is going to be a problem, just bring cash.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
My son returned after 6 years. Still bad service. Not crowded still waited for drinks and check way too long. Not professional managed. Staff physically and visibly drinking wine and sitting at their barn fire. Too laid back to put customer first. Try again 2024 if still open.
google avatar

Pat R.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant. Great food, the specials are always excellent, very intimate atmosphere (a lot of the staff is family and you can tell - in a good way) and the service is always so personal and exceptional. If they have the buffalo mozzarella appetizer special (they use day fresh ingredients so things change) definitely get it!!!
google avatar

Glen P.

Yelp
Wow, what a place!! Definitely going back in the near future.... Probably the very best Chicken Parm I've ever had. We also had another chicken/shrimp dish that was tremendous. It's a small place with limited seating, so there may be a wait. But it's well worth it as the people are great and the atmosphere very cozy. The wine and beer selections were very good as well. Limited draft, so just drink wine..... Will be back soon...
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Large portions were about the only thing positive. Everyone's pasta was overcooked, chicken Parms sauce was watery, and the soup was canned chicken noodle. Risotto was plain rice with Parmesan mixed in and not really risotto. Vegetables were mushy. For those prices - no way.
google avatar

Happy G.

Yelp
After all the reviews I was so excited to try this restaurant. The menu is great, lots of variety, and I chose stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer and baked stuffed shrimp as my main course. Mushrooms we okay, nothing worth ordering again and the baked stuffed shrimp was very disappointing. Not only were the shrimp tiny, and I mean tint, but the stuffing was mushy (as if too much butter was used)and it didn't even stay together on top of the shrimp - it slid down onto my plate. Really wish I took a picture but I didn't. Linguini was cooked okay but the sauce was absolutely flavorless, the dessert (cheesecake) was the best thing I had throughout this meal. Finally, found out they charge 3% up charge to use a credit card. Seriously as the owners you should absorb that 3% as the cost of doing business.

Carol B.

Yelp
Great food, poor management. If you ever have a problem, watch out, Karen is very rude. Federal hill is well worth the ride, for real Italian food.
google avatar

Tina M.

Yelp
Food and service were good...used a credit card on a 78.00 tab,and they charged a 2.80 service fee for using card. Really, charged me a credit card fee to spend money at your business.
google avatar

Charlene L.

Yelp
Went tonight, for the first time with friends. We all loved our meals. Our server, Joanne was great. She truly is a gem. We will be returning.
