On the Grid : The Corner Hotel

"A Richmond icon, The Corner is considered one of the top live music venues in Melbourne, hosting a plethora of bands over the years. But a great band room and awesome gigs aren’t the only reason to get down to The Corner. The historic establishment boasts a shiny new rooftop bar. Although a singular noun doesn’t really cut it since this vibrant newly renovated space offers a variety of areas. Cosy inside dining opens out onto a lush open-air courtyard. Original steel framed windows overlook the vibrancy of Swan Street, while a sleek separate function space offers an intimate setting. Multiple bars ensure you won’t go thirsty and a fresh approach to classic pub meals means you definitely won’t go hungry. It really is the ideal place for a summer’s day beer." - Shelby De Fazio

10 Best Venues & Places for Live Music in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"When a promoter has a band that’s too small for the Forum, they’ll often book them at Corner Hotel in Richmond. About 800 bodies can cram into this popular rock venue, which is often where popular Australian bands launch albums or play warm-up shows for much bigger tours. The genres here range from pop and rock to blues and country; the likes of Andrew W.K., Charles Bradley, Peaches, Dinosaur Jr., and David Hasselhoff all have lifted the roof." - Carrie Hutchinson

Saw the Longest Johns here, loved the concert. Staff were very professional and helpful, the event was standing only but my partner has some mobility issues and can not stant for long, I was able to organise through their events manager for a couple of chairs to be available to us on arrival, no worries at all, they were even labelled with our names like a restaurant table booking, I was very impressed. A fantastic night was had.

I've only been there to work. But the staff have been so helpful and lovely both while working and when I've bought drinks etc. Toilets are clean - grateful to have paper towels than a fan haha. Food was good. No complaints so far.

Went for a few pre Lions test drinks. Place was heaving when we left with a long queue outside to get in. Drink was reasonably priced, food was nice. Looks to be a great place for gigs based on the posters showing loads of upcoming acts.

Great Institution with decent food. Has a lunch special but can get a bit busy during that time. Parma is solid but not the best in richmond.

Google
Loved the roof top garden restaurant and although it was winter it felt warm and cozy. The wait staff were extremely attentive and accommodating. Food arrived quickly even though it was busy. Sticky date pudding was slightly overcooked on the bottom but apart from that, everything else was spot on.

Review: Drag Bingo at The Corner Hotel, Richmond If you’re looking for a night of laughs, sass, and top-tier entertainment, Drag Bingo at The Corner Hotel with Art Simone and Jemima Handful is a must! The food was delicious and beautifully presented—much like Art Simone herself—and the service was as quick as Jemima Handful in the sack. Came for the bingo, stayed for the comedy, and left full and satisfied (in more ways than one). The vulgar quips were coming hard and fast, keeping the crowd on their toes and in stitches. The atmosphere is perfect for a laid-back date night or after-work drinks with friends. Highly recommend if you love good food, quick wit, and a bit of fabulous filth with your bingo!

Can’t believe it’s been 9 yrs since last here!! Food still quite good. Would come back for the eggplant schnitz!! My steak flank juicy and did not need any sauce or seasoning.

Great venue for a gig. Wanna watch live an AFL match in the heart of Richmond? This is the place. The atmosphere is incredible. Very good food, portions and prices. Plenty of vego and GF options. Beers and ciders half price then others places around the area. Looking forward for the next time there.

Yelp
I was in town from the USA for a blink 182 concert. I was looking on Yelp for a bar with food close to the venue. Ended up at the corner hotel. Great spot! Downstairs they have their own concerts. Upstairs was a great and massive outdoor air style patio. Not sure if it was because of the blink concert or if it was just a busy night but the place was packed. Hard to find a spot but eventually settled in an area and was able to scan the QR code on the table to order food. Took about 45 mins to get the food but it didn't disappoint. Had the steak and chips that was part of the Tuesday special for $23. The gravy on the steak was delicious to dip the chips ( fries as we call them in America ) into. Beers were reasonable prices. I enjoyed my visit here !

Yelp
This is another of my beloved Richmond pubs, though since it is located on the Swan Street precinct it does tend to be a little out of my way. However I have no problems taking the round-a-bout route to get home every so often if it means having a quick drink in awesome rooftop bar. Mind you, since it is located next to a major railway line this place does get pretty noisy, especially in the evenings when the peak hour trains are roaring past literally every ten seconds, but this doesn't seem to upset the patrons who regularly flock here. The Corner is also one of Melbourne's many live music venues, though I have to admit that I've never made an effort to come here a watch a live band (which I really have to rectify one of these days).

Yelp
What more can you say about the Corner Hotel? Melbourne is home to a plethora of great live music venues. And the Corner Hotel has to be one of the best. The band room to the left can fit about 800 people in and the atmosphere and sound quality is great. They have live music every single week with Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the busiest nights. In recent months I had the pleasure of seeing The Bombay Royale (showing off their new LP) and Neil and Sharon Finn's new outfit the Pajama Club playing their debut album. On each occasion the music and the crowd were really great. The bars didn't have too long a queue so you never really missed any of the music. So much fun!

Yelp
We often go to The Corner to watch live music. If they have too many people there it can get difficult to see the stage (as there are a couple of massive poles in front). Other than that it's a good venue. The food is your run of the mill pub food. Upstairs is a beer garden and its massive. They have a couple of TV's around if you want to watch sport. There is only a couple though, and they're down one end so it doesn't ruin the vibe at all.

Yelp
The Corner is one of Melbourne's premier rock'n'roll venues. Most nights of the week they offer up high-calibre musical offerings from international and local touring artists. The band room capacity is about 850 patrons, which makes it unique to any venue size-wise in town. The rest of the place consists a lounge bar and upstairs inside/outside rooftop bar adjacent to a large industrial rail bridge. The kitchen is upstairs and the food, though expensive, is of great quality and consistency. One problem over recent times has been the sharp spike in drink prices. On my last visit I noticed the price for the same drink was more in the band room than the lounge bar and, equally the staff in the band room have a tendency to be fairly obnoxious. Outside of these gripes, any venue that serves up live music on a regular basis is strengthening the local music community and is therefore OK by me.

Yelp
I've been coming to the Corner Hotel to see bands from the day I turned 18. It's that old faithful venue, you always know exactly what to expect. The sound is always good. The crowd size is big enough to feel part of something, and small enough to feel intimate and get a good view of the stage...unless you're near one of those damn poles - why must they be so big?! I went to the Corner Hotel to eat for the first time last week. From Friday - Sunday they open the rooftop pub. Big space and under cover so you can enjoy the sun but be protected from Melbourne's unpredictable rain. The food was good honest pub fare. I tackled a chilli burger and was pleasantly surprised by the heat. Topped off with a Mountain Goat and a friendly catch up and you've got yourself a decent pub experience. The food service was a little slow, but it was Friday so we weren't exactly in a hurry. I'll be back for more music and no doubt another beer or two.

Yelp
Awesome venue. Been here many times over the years to see some great gigs. The Corner has a bar and kitchen upstairs where you can get the best parma in Melbourne! On a Tuesday night can even get a parma at pot for like $15....bargain! You can even get an eggplant parma, which is pretty awesome if you are a vego like me! Upstairs, has an outdoor patio, which would just be awesome in summer. Drinking a beer in the sun. Downstairs, we have seen over the years many bands from both Australia and overseas. From magic dirt, the grates, kate miller heidke, lanie lane, mutemath, big scary, and heaps more! The venue has awesome sound and great stage set up. To top it off the range of bottled beers is pretty rad! They offer a few craft brews as well as the mainstream stuff. If you haven't been......you are missing out!!

Yelp
Without a shadow of a doubt, the ironic "flaming pie" was the worst meal I've ever paid money to ingest. The pie was colder than my beer and at $24, I would have had a more pleasurable experience at the local service station. Avoid. You have been warned.

Yelp
The Corner Hotel is Melbourne's answer to Carnegie Hall, without the esteem, classical music or architectural design. Ok so it's more like a pub that is large enough to house decent sized gigs and is slightly old, hence my comparison. It's nothing like Carnegie Hall. But it is the go to place for Melburnians to check out a plethora of touring and local bands. Situated a stone's throw from the city in the inner city suburb of Richmond, there are four train lines situated nearby as well as some trams. There is also, I now know after years of not realising, a bar upstairs that serves a range of great pub food and has a large deck to hang out on. Downstairs is a great size for gigs - large enough to feel like you are actually at a concert but intimate enough that you feel like you are in touch with the band that is playing. There are also two bars on different sides of the room which makes getting a drink much easier in a large crowd. The Corner Hotel really does deserve to be considered Melbourne's premiere venue for small touring bands.

Yelp
Always excited to find a band I like has a gig at The Corner. Great place to let your hair down, get a little messy, and enjoy some live music. So many good memories tied to that band room. Long live The Corner Hotel.

Yelp
The rooftop is what makes me so happy about this central and iconic Richmond venue. Yesterday we were the first ones in, hungry after our Eureka Climb and in desperate need of beers to assist recovery. Straight to the rooftop. The rooftop has undertaken a transformation in the last few years and is now a great place to waste the afternoon away over a pint or two with some lovely people. The kitchen does some great food and the band room is famous all by itself. Good times.

Yelp
Look, I'm not as young as I once was, so going to gigs and standing around for hours waiting for the headline act to rock up is just not going to happen. And as much as I love seeing live music, I'm not going to stand around in airless rooms looking like someone who has just completed a triathlon, sweat dripping off my brow. That's why I like The Corner. There's air in there! Aircon! Room to move! YEAH ROCK ON! I can book my tickets online and pick them up on the night. There's a cloak room to stick my coat in ($2) and for the most part the bar is pretty good though I do wish they had a better cider option - Bulmers is just not going to cut it in my book. It's the music venue for everyone, even oldies like me.

Yelp
Within my first few weeks of being in Melbourne, I was craving some music and this was the first place I could find a gig. I gathered about 6 or 7 international chicks and we headed in a maxi cab out to richmond for our first australian gig. The venue was cozy and I loved being able to get up real close to the artist. From that night on, I formed a very strong relationship with this suburb and the Corner Hotel in particular. Months down the road, I joined some mates once again to see The Tallest Man on Earth here. We grabbed drinks across the street and got inside right before he started playing. This show was jam packed but I closed my eyes and listened to his beautiful music and heartfelt tunes fill the room. I can rave on and on about the musical talent's i've seen here but the show's would not go on without the friendly staff, easy ticket purchasing process and beers flowing from the two bars they've got downstairs. I'm pretty sure they've got a chilled out rooftop as well but I've never ventured up there. I think my favorite thing about this venue is that they always provide the ticket stubs for you at the door upon exiting. long live rock & roll, rhythm & soul

Yelp
Great venue for live music and a brand new rooftop dishing up tasty (and fancy) bar food. They have classics like parmas and fries as well as delicious bites including a whole roasted eggplant with pomegranate molasses! Yum. The rooftop had a large open area and a air conditioned inside spot. Really nice. Order at the bar. The beer selection is good, not many cocktails (which is fine) and some tasty wines too. Great Melbourne venue!
google avatar

Gemma H.

Yelp
Been seeing bands play here since I was a teenager and not much has changed. I love the corner. It's one of melbourne's great live venues and there are not many of those left! In recent years we've seen a better selection of beer appear (usually at least 2 Goat beers will be rotating so you've got a good chance of getting a fancy pants) and some fancy food is on offer But keep it simple, grab a Parma, stop in for trivia once in a while, and have a few pints in the beer garden, on a freezing night for the true experience!

Yelp
I've been going to The Corner for years to see bands, but only went to the upstairs bar and beer garden for the first time recently - I never realised how "all things to all people" it was. Old-school grungy style pub, dedicated live music venue, fancy rooftop bar/dining room/beer garden upstairs - wow! The Corner is pretty small for a music venue, but nicely fills the gap for Australian and international acts who aren't sure they can fill a mid-sized or arena venue, or who long for the authenticity of a good old-fashioned rock pub. One of my favourite aspects of the size of the venue is the air-conditioning - even for sold-out shows where the band room is packed, it's not too hard to find an area under an aircon vent, which helps alleviate the sweaty, stifling atmosphere you usually have to endure at a pub gig. With more and more live music venues closing down or not offering music anymore, it's great to have the Corner around, and for them to be so dedicated to the music aspect of the pub that they have a dedicated box office. I've been to better live music pubs in my life, but The Corner is about as good as it gets in Melbourne these days.
google avatar

Yelp
The Corner is probably my favourite live music venue in Melbourne. I think I've said that about two or three other venues in Yelp reviews before, but this time I mean it, honest! I've been coming to the Corner for a long time, coming close to 20 years now, and have seen some of my most memorable gigs (and a few other things too) over that time. The Corner has a lot to offer. It was a long time before I even realised there was a rooftop bar here! The main band room is big, something that you sometimes don't realise until you look back at it from the front of stage. Sure, there are a couple of annoying poles in the middle of the room, but you have so many great spots to stand that this doesn't matter. There are two stages here, though the smaller one on the left is barely used these days and ends up being a raised spot to watch the main stage from most of the time. Two bars make it fairly easy to get a drink, and their beer selection is decent enough to be better than a lot of live music venues are. There's air conditioning in here too, which is great, because it can get pretty hot and sweaty. Coat check is only $2 too! Outside of the main band room there is the side bar, which has one of the toastiest heaters I have ever seen in a bar before. Three out of four times when I come to the Corner it's cold and wet outside, so it's perfect to escape that! I haven't spent much time in the side bar though, as I tend to head upstairs to the rooftop bar and restaurant. There are plenty of tables both outside and in, with plenty of heaters to keep that chill off too. The food up here is pretty decent too, but you'd be crazy to go past the massive chicken parma that uses a big fat juicy breast and is the perfect size to make you just that little bit too-full. As a special bonus, it's only $16 with a drink on Wednesday nights, which also happens to be Trivia Night! When you're upstairs, take a look at the wall that is palstered with gig posters from years gone by. Just seeing some of the names here should be reason enough to make you want to come back here again and again just to soak up some of that history.

Yelp
Fun fact number one: there is a bartender at the Corner Hotel who is the spitting image of Jessica from True Blood. Fun fact numbers two, three and four and five: the Corner Hotel shares the same owners as the Northcote Social Club; is housed within what was once a 19th century pub; became a music venue in the 1940s; has hosted gigs by Mick Jagger, David Gilmour, Crowded house and the late great Elliot Smith AND is the very place where the riff to The White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' was composed during a sound check. But I digress... The Corner Hotel is simply one of Melbourne's best music venues with an unparalleled rock pedigree and unbeatably grungy ambience. Boasting not only said gig space but also a separate bar complete with pool tables, a wealth of seating and a pretty good food menu AND a roof garden boasting not only another bar but the occasional glimpse of said True Blood doppelganger herself, The Corner Hotel is awesome. The live music lineup at this popular venue is eclectic - the three gigs I've been to at the Corner this year alone span reggae, rock and hip hop - the drinks decent and the atmosphere always excellent. If you're into live music without the commercial connotations of stadium concerts and the like you should definitely sign up for the Corner Hotel's newsletter. The gig space is pretty small making sold out events the norm. Get in quick.

Lamont C.

Yelp
Been a bit under the weather so I was not adventurous with my dinner selection, just went with the good old chicken parma. Despite the rooftop being very packed I was served in under 10 minutes, the chicken was very thick, not much sauce on it, some ham, generous topping of well melted cheese. Chips big and crunchy. Bit of salad on the side which was alright. There are likely better options on the menu-probably should have gone with one, and the place has both the rooftop and frontbar for food and drink and relaxing.

Yelp
The Corner Hotel is my favourite music venue in Melbourne. Many an interesting band plays here. Not stadium fillers, but many of my favs have played (I even saw Public Enemy on the bill when I walked past today, awesome). The venue itself, has a ground floor area which is the location of the lower bar and where bands play, and an upstairs rooftop bar. Why I really like this place is as a gig venue. It's intimate, as the stage is quite low down and there are no barriers, so you can get really close to the band. They usually fit circa 300 - 400 people in there, so there's a good vibe without being too crowded, plus the acoustics are good. As a drinking venue, it's pretty good, I like the roof top bar. It's certainly not up market, which is in no way a bad thing. The Corner Hotel is a solid drinking venue, full of interesting folks and a good range of beers and wines.

Yelp
I love this place, and know I'm going to love it more and more in the months to come. Firstly this place seems to host all of my favorite bands from out of town. Secondly, I came here for NYE, and had an awesome time. There was a soul music night. There's an excellent rooftop bar, a live room, and a regular bar room. The vibe and the people and the staff was all really good. We had an amazing night, and the prices are comparably very fair to other venues that off much less. I will def return here and become a regular as I already have tickets to upcoming shows.

Yelp
The Corner Hotel is indeed, positioned on a corner. However, it is not a hotel. Perhaps that's why everyone calls it "The Corner", although I think that is Australian linguistic laziness more than correctness. The corner is a very popular mid-tier music venue. Mid-Tier sounds like a bit of an insult. Not so. The Corner may not get stadium crowds, but all the interesting bands play here. You'll find their replete list of upcoming gigs on a drive-in style board (on the Swan Street side). Otherwise, The Corner is also a pretty functional pub. The bar downstairs is a little dark and dingy, but sometimes that's what you're after in a "proper" pub. They furnish that need nicely. Upstairs is the Corner rooftop. A large space with a great setup. Decent pub food and a good crowd on almost every night of the week. Sit, have a beer and watch the trains rumble past to and from Richmond station. They also hold Wednesday night trivia, which is quite popular.

Yelp
As a muso, you never forget your first time playing at the corner... Combining a world renowned band room and live music institution with a fully functioning bar and kitchen, the Corner Hotel is a Melbourne icon, and has been for over 200 years, and almost 100 years as a live music venue. The best way to experience the Corner is to go there. Whether you are there to see a band, of which the list of who has trod the stage is endless and studded with famous 'drop ins', or just up for dinner and a beer, make your choice of which door to enter and see it for yourself. With the band room holding upwards of 700 people, it's touring acts and large scale home grown talent who play here. Mick Jagger popped in for a secret show once, as did Dave Gilmour. These days it's the usual stop for festival acts doing sideshows or large album launches. Getting a ticket also gives you access to the rest of the Hotels features. The Front bar is perfect for cozying up with a street press and sipping away, or the rooftop is a highly sought after destination on weekends and summer afternoons. Boasting a menu that is typical of Melbourne pubs these days, that being great food for a price that seems a little unfair, you can expect to pay upwards of $20 for Fish & Chips, $30 for a steak and $16 for a pasta. Better for their snack menu, which is a tad more realistic, this punter enjoys a bowl of chips and a few beers rather than using all his beer money on dinner. The Corner Hotel fills up every weekend, so if you aren't a punter checking out a band, get in early and snag a table before they're all gone. The line out the front can be deceiving too, as if the band room is sold out, the pub can only let in a certain number of guests into the front bar and beer garden. Again, get in early and avoid having to stand in the street.
google avatar

Vincent F.

Yelp
It's all about the music here, been to see some really good bands. Upstairs is nice in summer to sit out and chill and there's some decent beer selection. Food is fine, nothing special, but the location is what wins here. Always a good place for some afternoon beers on a sunny day, just avoid when there anything on at the MCG as it gets pretty packed after!
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Great place any way you look at it. As a muso, it's a great venue to play, the sound is mind blowing and the house crews know what they're doing. The curtains can be pulled to section off the crowd areas, making any size crowd feel like a sell out crowd. As a punter coming to see a good band, the sound is great, the bar gets rammed from time to time but the brews on tap and full bar behind make it worth it. Depending on crowd size you'll have room to dance and roar. Only downside is this concrete pole about a metre thick right in the way of the dance floor. It's quite a sight to see the standing crowd divide either side of it. As a restauranteur coming for a decent feed - possible before a band - then upstairs is your place to be. The open beer garden with less seats inside makes this a preferable summer haunt for groups. With the train crossing the bridge just across the road, the play of the sun on the moving glass is magical. The meals are great pub food stylings - parmas, burgers, and more. The jugs and brews and bar size is as big if not better than downstairs.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
The Corner is a great venue and a part of Melbourne's music legacy. I've seen a couple of shows here including Urthboy and the Herd. The sound set up is great, beer prices are reasonable and it's a really intimate set up. It's a shame about the giant poles right in the middle of the dancefloor. It's very easy to get an awkward standing area. I guess that's because the building is tucked under a railway line.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
I've seen Broken Social Scene, Grizzly Bear, and Wild Beasts here and it's a great little venue. Columns are annoying, sure. Beer prices aren't fun but the rooftop area is a cool place to hang out.
google avatar

Jenelle M.

Yelp
The Corner is a great place to go and see a band. The band room is dark and moody just as it should be! It's not a huge space which means you're able to get right up close to the action - if that's your thing!

Yelp
Great service!! Freya and Laurie were deadset legends, they linked up like Starksy and Hutch up in that top bar!! And even accepted Bitcoin for payment.... would ya believe!! Deserve all 5 stars x

Yelp
Really enjoyed Friday Night Drinks on the rooftop here tonight. Have worked in the hood for over 6 months and had no idea that they had such a big space upstairs. Got really busy with pre-game Asian cup goers but still never waited more than about a minutes for service at the bar. Lots of sitting room and fresh air for all.
