Corner Shop - Review - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"A convenience store in Virgil Village, Corner Shop has a surprisingly great selection of craft beer considering their size (it’s tiny) . In addition to all the tremendous local beer you’d expect to find at bigger shops - Brouwerij West, Beachwood, etc. - they often have some truly shocking finds, like Oklahoma’s Prairie Artisan Ales, North Carolina’s Fonta Flora, and Vermont’s The Alchemist. Pick-up in-store only. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

This use to be a great place for different wines and convenience items. However, now there is barely any items at all. The store is mostly empty and they rarely restock. The staff no longer pay attention to you and are often on their phones. It has gone downhill. Such a shame!

Google
I used to come here multiple times per week, and loved the eclectic selection of snacks, drinks, and household ingredients but now... it's so sad. This place has gone downhill so sharply in the last year and seems like it's on its last legs. There is barely any inventory of beer, wine, or food. Staff are often rude or uninterested in helping or answering questions. It seems like since the new management took over they've completely abandoned all effort to keep this place running or their customers happy.

Google
This place has some kind of broken AC or refrigeration unit on their roof that squeaks loudly 24/7 and can be heard in all the adjacent apartments. I've complained about it to the staff before and they do not care. The atmosphere inside is dark, dirty, and musty.

Gabriel Cohen

Google
This used to be one of my favorite stops for wine. Unfortunately the new management doesn’t seem to care about training their staff. Went in today and asked for a recommendation for a chilled white wine, the shop keep responded by saying “sorry I don’t drink” when I asked him if he could at least tell me the prices of the pre-chilled white wines he said he “didn’t know which ones were white” Im not faulting the employee at all for being untrained, but if you are going to continue to stock a large range of wines please give your employees some training! Or at least put stickers with prices on things so I don’t have to ask…

Google
There's always flies on the bread, mold on the bagels, and I saw jam 60% off that expired in February of last year...not sure how they stay open with such minimal products worth buying... However, staff is always friendly!

Google
If possible, I would give this business no stars. As a woman of color, it’s extremely uncomfortable to walk into this store (not once BUT twice) and be treated differently than the customers that are white. Both times I’ve been in this store, the man behind the counter (white/curly hair) has been rude to me and I was nothing but friendly and a nice customer to him and the other customers in the store. And those two times that I came into the store, there were white customers before me and he treated them with the utmost respect and kindness. When I get to the counter, he got on his phone, didn’t even acknowledge me or offer me a bag. The complete opposite he treated the white customers before me. We are in 2022. People of color live in Los Angeles. Get used to it.

Imagine going to a wine store and they don’t have a single bottle of wine to sell you, Wild

They say that if a library can't be large, it must therefore be a fine one. This place is like a fine library of beer, wines, and everything the home sommelier needs. Well-curated selections always, and such knowledgeable staff. I always find myself learning something new whenever I pop in.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood shop. Came here while waiting for a Togo order next door. Had an interesting selection of beer and wine. Prices are moderate for the neighborhood. If you want a nice selection of beer and wine and some other healthy type food a fare -- check this place out.

Yelp
Yesterday instead of hitting our usual haunts in Silverlake we decided to walk, find new places. So we're walking along Hoover and see a small grocery market with a sign stating they allow dogs. Well - we love dog friendly businesses as Elizabeth is always with me when I'm in Silverlake. We walk in and realize this is what every corner grocery store SHOULD be. The folks working here were SUPER FRIENDLY. We were immediately treated like an honored guest. They had a treat for my dog. Giving my dog a treat earns several stars. Amazing selection of wines and specialty foods. We purchased a sourdough baguette. Reality is this is the BEST BAGUETTE I have ever bought in Los Angeles. I have been to all the top French bakeries in Beverly Hills and/or Hollywood-West Hollywood. This baguette beat them all. The crust was flavorful, center just the right texture-consistency. It was delicious. Fact is we will be back at least once each week for a baguette. Great little store. Happy that we found it 4 minutes from our home.

Yelp
Don't know who took over but the lady working the front was insufferable. Was talking loudly on the phone at me while I tried to check out and then threw the paper bag at me so I could bag it myself. I'll bag my own shit but don't throw it at me.

Tonyt D.

Yelp
Ate this really good Tres Leches cake there! Had the best service and loved everyone there. Would recommend if you are looking for gourmet deserts made in Los Angeles. Diamond in the rough but worth stopping by!

Jason O.

Yelp
Undependable store, does not follow their own listed hours and will close up whenever they randomly feel like it.

Yelp
Awesome little convenience store in a street teeming with excellent speciality shops and restaurants. It has all the things you'd expect in a convenience store but with a local (ie, non-chain) flavor.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Cam here with a Groupon in hand for $10 for $20 worth of goods. The beers are a little high- they have a fun offer of buy 5 beers and get the sixth one free- but we calculated that would be at least $12 for a six pack if you got the $2.50 beers-hm- not such a great deal. They were super helpful in choosing a wine. I like their pricing- $0 ish bottles on the top shelf, then $30 ish, Then $20 ish, then $10 ish at the bottom. Makes it easy to sort by price. Wish they were in my neighborhood!

Yelp
I mean words can't express how awesome this spot is...they have frozen pizza from La Morra, the best beer and wine selection you can't find most anywhere and really rad people who work there.

Drake A.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed in the new ownership here. This used to be one of the best parts of the neighborhood with really friendly knowledgeable staff on all their products. Now I have been charged for multiple items so many times it's impossible that it's a mistake. Their inventory has gone down substantially, and it's no longer a friendly neighborhood place.

Yelp
The absolute gem of our neighborhood. We're in here way too often, and the team is always wonderful to talk to with great recommendations and pairing suggestions. We're always discovering something new and delicious. You know everything stocked was selected with care and I have never walked away disappointed. Every friend I bring through here spends the rest of our time together talking about how great Corner Shop is!

Yelp
Such a fun gem....looks all dark and it's like walking into a secret treasure. Deliciousness and special wine selections await you.

Jozie L.

Yelp
Horrible Customer service, came into the local Shop thinking this would be a good place to do small convenient shopping, guy in the front desk seems like he hates his job or just doesn't like people of color . I walked in didn't get greeted got eyes rolled at me instead the music was so high he couldn't hear any of my questions then wants to say I'm hostile because I slightly pulled my mask down to ask him the question for the third time since he "couldn't hear me" . Whoever owns this place needs to talk to him because you just lost a potential customer and will keep losing customers due to his poor customer service.

Yelp
My son, Fritter, has been extremely sick as of late. No need for anyone to get their undergarments in a bundle, I'm taking the same precautions my grandmother took with me when she escaped the dark death, which was no jokin' back in the day. Fritter remains in the attic, where there's a small window so he can get fresh air. I like to drop off food for him because the lock only opens one way, and he just can't get enough of those marmalade Hi-Chews, although it does not even come close to my preserves, but I don't complain. Sometime when shopping, if I'm feeling particularly sassy, I will flirt with the handsome gentleman behind the cash register, who is extremely helpful in suggesting wine. I bought two bottles of a red wine which I had last night and they were heavenly. Maybe too good!!! When I woke up, I realized I forgot to feed Fritter! But he's used to it, and he never complains. Thank you Patricia and Morton at The Corner Store, I will be coming back for more! Yours, Edith

Yelp
Neighborhood gem alert ! Can't get over how cute that place looks. I stoped by just to check it out and ended up leaving with two bottles of wine. The selection of wine is quite different from these overpriced and overrated brands you could find at any big name grocery store. I feel like I could have closed my eyes and picked a random bottle and it would have been perfect! And already I look forward to the next wine discovery at my future visit! I hope they will also serve coffee soon so it will give me an excuse to just hang out there. Oh and they also have lots of choice of beer displayed in these awesome vintage looking coolers.

Yelp
Before Corner Shop occupied this space, the "convenience" store that was here wasn't exactly convenient. Empty shelves and coolers full of warm beers. Yuck, no thanks. However, quite the opposite could be said now. Part grocery and snack essentials, part fancy-dancy wine/beer shop, this little store is just what the neighborhood ordered. They're still building up their grocery inventory, and the coolers in the back are still a bit warm, but don't let the homespun feel fool you--Adam, the unassuming shopkeep used to be the sommelier at Republique, Lucques, and others. In other words, he knows his shit. You won't find magnums of cheap Woodbridge Chardonnay here. Expect an unusual, highly-curated selection of beverages. Despite the attendant high prices, it's nice to know this kind of selection is a walk around the corner and not a frustrating drive to TJs or 365. Nice too that I can just stroll over for a La Croix and a bag of tortilla chips, too. I love seeing this little pocket of Silver Lake develop.

Yelp
Love this little store. Great selection of beer and wine. Stop by here and pick something up before you visit a friend.

Yelp
SO glad I decided to take a quick walk down to check out the Corner Shop tonight. I'd driven by a few times since the new sign on the outside and that alone was already an upgrade from the previous tenant, so my curiosity was peaked. And I was NOT disappointed! Adam has created an awesome neighborhood gem, with everything from fruit to advil to cereal to Sherry wine and local beers! I'm so excited to have a nice, well-stocked, and easy to walk to market ran by such a friendly and helpful owner! Thanks Adam!

Yelp
This place is rad and convenient. I've been shopping here for a few months now as it's super close to home, relative to my general needs and has a laid back environment with good music & vibe. I first went in for beer (which they have great sales on), as you can mix and match a 6pack and get 1 free. The owner also recognized my taste and turned me on to a few other beers that I enjoyed as well. There's been other times when I needed items on the fly, and sure enough, they carried it. It's great, as these items are well priced, stocked and the only place within walking distance in the area that's open to 10pm on most days. AA batteries, snacks, popcorn, etc... Very cool. One employee even noticed that I smoked a particular type of cigarette one day. Sure enough, when I returned the next week, they carried it on my behalf. Definitely will be returning. 5stars well deserved. Thanks guys!

Yelp
Best beer shop in town! The staff was super eager to discuss the selection of craft beers and help us pick the perfect drinks for NYE. We'll be back, thanks!

Yelp
Pulled up outside and my jaw dropped when I saw the sign out front that read "99% less sketchy." That's racist y'all. I drove to a liquor store around the corner that doesn't commodify Latino culture by advertising cerveza and vino (literally their primary signage is in Spanish), while also alienating the community they're in. Remy's market wasn't sketchy before, it was a standard corner store. I'm a sucker for bougie places, but this was beyond the pale.
google avatar

Britney S.

Yelp
Oh brother. Pretentious, overpriced and doesn't carry necessities. I came in and asked the owner if they carried salsa, his reply: "no, but we're in talks with an organic farmer to make us a pico de gallo." Eyeroll. I felt like I was in a Portlandia skit. I've grown accustomed to the process of gentrification in the neighborhood over the last ten years. I used to shop at the store that was here before. However, it's not until I saw the sign referring to the previous business occupying the space as 'sketchy' that I was just confused by how downright ignorant the owner is. Totally disrespectful and alienating to the community that existed before and after this novelty store closes.

Lolo L.

Yelp
I confirmed my Yelp account just so I could write a review about this place. Our neighborhood has really been needing a great bottle shop and this one exceeds expectations. The selection is unique and inventory rotates, which means a new surprise awaits you every time you shop here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and will happily take the time to guide you through your options. Today I stopped in to buy a bottle of sparkling for a dinner party and the person working talked me through every bottle in my price range. When I still seemed indecisive he took me to one last bottle that was in a different part of the shop and it was exactly what I didn't know I was looking for! These people are not snobs, they are enthusiasts, and they don't just carry the high-end stuff, so you can come pick up a tall can on your long walk home from the park bench if that was your evening as well. Also, it is super cute inside, it makes you feel like your going to your cool friends house. Thank you corner shop! Can't wait to see what's there the next time I stop in.

Yelp
Unwelcoming environment. The variety isn't that great as others say. Definitely overpriced and out of place. I'd make the drive to Trader Joe's or 365.

MLynn B.

Yelp
My new favorite wine store.. a very nice guy helped me find two bottles I now love. I'll be back. The prices are reasonable, not grocery store prices but the wine isn't grocery store wine either. Thing of note, they only allow three people in the store at one time which is fine with me. It's tough to find a "convenience" store with high quality food and beverage options in this neighborhood but this place is it.

Yelp
So lucky to have this gem right in our neighborhood. My husband and I have been going since they opened, and their offerings just keep getting better. By far my top item is the fresh bread delivered every Tue and Thu! The fresh eggs from local farmers are wonderful and the organic milk is the same price found anywhere else. My husband typically goes for beer and wine and Adam is always there to suggest the right thing. Everyone who works there is helpful and friendly, and we couldn't be happier to have the Cornershop as our local one-stop shop!

Yelp
I was lucky to be staying near Corner Shop on my recent trip to LA. They have some great locally grown produce, but the real star is the wine selection. The owner, Adam, is not only extremely knowledgeable, but incredibly friendly and approachable. I actually learned so much that I will be a better wine shopper from now on. I really appreciate the tips and I hope to visit again on my next trip down south. Thanks Corner Shop!

Yelp
I live just around the corner, and this place has saved me in so many situations!! They have a good selection of items from vegan chocolate to fine wine to fresh guacamole and local bread. Been a local for months now, super stoked on the convenience.

Melinda S.

Yelp
This place is THE BEST! -Beautiful selection of beer & wine, both your everyday options, as well as special selections you can't find just anywhere. AND most importantly, for someone like myself who doesn't know ANYTHING about wine, the owners will help you pick the perfect one for you, whether you want to spend $10 or $50! -The people running the shop are always friendly! -A lot of markets have refrigerators that don't keep their drinks very cold, which drives me nuts. Not this place! Their cold drinks are always super cold. -Let's talk about their amazing kombucha they carry! Each bottle has a pup on it and I think proceeds help animals. I love to buy here whenever I can! -The food they carry is great! They have fresh baked bread, tortillas, cereal, marshmallows (I made Rice Krispie treats), and more. Everything you need from a local market, but even better. -LOVE their aesthetic. The shop itself is beautiful, clean, and makes for a really easy and enjoyable experience.

Yelp
Adam was one of the best "recommenders" I've met. Immediately helped me and solved my wine choice in a matter of minutes (an amazing Riesling) AND even gave me a great deal on the bottle. Highly suggest anyone in this area get their wine at corner shop.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I love, love, LOVE this store. I'm obsessed with wine and the selection here really is as good as it gets. There's something for everyone, from affordable bottles of organic wines to top-of-the-line French standards. The staff is not only wildly knowledgable about wine but passionate as well. And they are more than happy to share that knowledge and passion about their excellent selection. And that's just the wine! The beer selection is as good as it gets (I mean, they sell Grimm Ales here, people) but it's also unpretentious (Budweiser too!). And there's lots of tasty cheese and ice cream and fresh baked bread and just all around goodness. If you like wine and beer, this store is worth a pilgrimage.
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
The best. Everyone is so knowledgeable but unpretentious. They just want you to enjoy what you're getting. I'm so glad it's in the neighborhood!

Hilary P.

Yelp
Beautiful selection of wines in such a cute neighborhood shop. Thanks to the knowledgable staff, I found exactly what I was looking for. I am so lucky that this place is on my way home from work.

Shannon O.

Yelp
My go-to. They always have really amazing wines at good prices. A lot of thought has obviously gone into the wine selection. I live equidistant from the Corner Shop and two other dedicated wine shops, and I always choose this one first. Ask for recommendations! I've never been disappointed by a choice recommended to me by their team!

R W.

Yelp
Adam is the best. Never had a bad beer or wine recommendation. He's friendly and only carries great stuff that he loves. Exactly what the neighborhood needed!

Lucas L.

Yelp
Love the guys who work here, great tunes, the best wine, a great place to come get snacks. Always out to help and love having them in the neighborhood.

Yelp
To all comments that said '99% less sketchy' sign is offensive are obviously from people who dont live nearby. I live right across the store and yes, the old store was sketchy AF. It's not an insult to Latin community as some people claimed. Im sure it's more about how the old store was set up. And guess what? The old owner is Asian. There is nothing Latin in this equation. The old store never had more than 1/8 of things on shelves. All drink were luke warm. And the owner was absolutely live/sleep in the store. You walked in and it felt like you were in the most sketchy part of town which is totally not. We always wonder how the hell he paid rent. We even thought he probably sold drugs on the side to get by. He was nice but he looked like he never showered for dayyyyys. This Corner store is definitely a gift from above. I know their selections are expensive for some but hey, if you cant afford it you can walk down to the 99cents store down the street

Vicki V.

Yelp
Perfect addition to the neighborhood. Fair prices. Great mix of inventory. Basic goods as well as finer things. Small selection of snacks like bite size cheeses, fruit, some prepared food like wraps, beer and wine, kombucha, ginger beer, fresh bread with rotating bakeries, and could even pick up gifts like nice raw honey and things like that. Owner was knowledgeable abt the products and friendly. Beers mix and match- buy 5 get 1 free. Works for cans and bottles. Got a left hand brewing company milk stout for abt $3 and it's great. If you need a toothbrush it's 1.49. Kraft Mac n cheese 2 bucks. Rice, flour, butter, some ethnic sauces, gnocchi, penne, pasta sauce, dish detergent, laundry detergent, matches, hot chocolate ingredients, all kinds of stuff. Happy to support this business and glad it is here. Next visit I'm picking up a bottle of chardonnay that had a delicious sounding description. 10 percent off coupon was given for me to use next time.
