I recently traveled to CT for a funeral, and booked a room at the inn as it was one of the few pet-friendly accommodations in the area. I carefully reviewed the pictures online, and selected a second floor room (Bluejay Cache) in the lodge. When we arrived to check in, we were given a very dark, gloomy, smelly room on the garden level of the lodge instead. When we asked Mark about this, he said the room I requested wasn't turned over and that this was comparable instead because it also had a king bed like the one we had requested online. I did not book a room for the bed size - I booked a room based on a variety of factors, but fine. I also found this odd since we were the only guests staying at the inn that evening. Why not clean the second floor room for us and accommodate our room request? I also found this somewhat annoying because they knew we were traveling to the area for a funeral - I would have assumed under the circumstances they would have gone out of their way to accommodate us. Instead, I was asked "who died, how did he die" and then a series of follow-up questions surrounding the circumstances of his death I won't repeat but found incredibly insensitive.
Mark asked us multiple times if we were planning to eat breakfast in the morning - we said yes twice. Then he brought it up again, in the context of us "being the only guests tonight" and he would knock $20 off our bill if we skipped breakfast; it became clear he didn't want to have to wake up and provide this for us. Again, under the circumstances of our reasons for traveling, seemed somewhat insensitive. Once we said "no problem we don't need breakfast" he said "good, that way I can sleep in." I would never imagine saying this to a guest.
The room itself (Starling's Nest) had a VERY overwhelming musty smell, like being in an old basement. There were two small windows side-by-side at the front of the room, only one of which opened. So there was no air circulation at all, unless we turned on the very noisy air conditioning unit which was covered in dust. This bothered me since the room I had actually requested had multiple large windows according to the pictures online.
There were a few dark black long hairs clinging to the bathroom door, dust on all the window screens, a spider web in the corner of the shower, and I saw at least a half dozen bugs (ants, silverfish, etc.) throughout the room. I absolutely do not believe this room was worth what we paid. It felt like we were sleeping in a musty, moldy basement. I would never stay here again, unfortunately. Perhaps the rooms in the main inn are better, but skip the lodge.
