12 Bewildering Hills Where Gravity Seems to Work in Reverse

"“Have you ever experienced a place where the laws of nature seem to have gone completely berserk? Have you ever stood on the wall or felt an unexplainable force?” So reads the promotional information on the Cosmos Mystery Spot, where they offer a 30 minute long tour of these “berserk” natural forces. Of course, the secret to the dozens of mystery areas, magnetic hills, and “gravity-vortexes,” around the world lies not in any paranormal force, but in the peculiarities of our own minds. As our brains attempt to orient themselves, we use horizontal and vertical cues around us to establish up and down. Deprived of a horizon line, and given misleading cues – like a cabin built on a 20 degree tilt – our brains can make some surprising mistakes. Even more curiously, when our bodies are put at an angle, as happens when standing inside the Cosmos Mystery Spot’s slanted identical cabins, the perceptual distortion doubles, increasing these odd illusions even more. The perceived distortions are due to a forced perspective which makes shapes appear larger or smaller due to a distorted background. A classic example of this is an Ames room in which people appear to grow in size as they walk across it. To make a mystery spot of your own it is surprisingly simple. Build a small room and lift one side of the house until the room tilts about twenty five degrees. Second, disguise the fact that the house is tilted by giving visitors incorrect cues. Build the house on a slope. Make it difficult to see a horizon line, and place altered objects and furniture to make everything appear normal. Invite people to experience the gravity-vortex for themselves." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We stopped into Cosmos on a Friday morning to start our day and we all ended up loving it. We bought tickets there with no problems. Our tour guide was fun and the experience was a blast! We talked about it all day and got some cool pictures. They do have a small gift shop and some rock mining too. Plan on around an hour there.

Google
I am not usually someone who gets motion sickness, but wow did I feel ill after going through this tour. While there are signs that talk about people shouldn't do this if they get motion sickness, it was not something I expected to have happen. I was able to feel a little off in the gift shop, so if you start feeling sick in there, it might be best to pass on going. Our guide was great and demonstrated how everything worked but because I felt so ill, I was barely able to pay attention. Our children were able to participate and didn't feel as ill as us adults did.

Google
Super cool spot. Total mind bender. Recommend wearing shoes that are secure to your feet as opposed to sandals. If you get dizzy easily I probably wouldn’t recommend this tour. Our guide Judas was a cool kid and did a great job. A must stop with the family after checking out all the sites in the area.

Laura Jones

Google
I came as a kid with my family and loved it. We came back now as adults with our own kids and they loved it! *Be aware, this experience may leave you dizzy or motion sick.* There is a walk uphill to the cabin, and then you go through a couple rooms, there are a couple outdoor presentations, and then you walk back to the visitors center. Watching water and balls go against their nature, walking up walls, balls that hang outwards instead of down, and seeing tall and short people switch heights is so much fun! Afterwards, we dug our own geode and cracked them in the hydraulic press. It was a win for our family! Reservations for the tour are required. Geode tickets are separate.

Google
We had a great time with a great tour guide. This was a good experience, and we had a large group (about 40) we split up and were in line about 15 minutes before tour started . This is neat experience for sure ! (Edited to add 15 minute wait between tour )

Google
Went to Cosmos Mystery Area today not knowing what to expect. Such a neat place! Our guide, Adrian( I think) did a fantastic job! He was a very young teen who told me he had only worked there for 2 months. He was great at making everyone- both kids and adults laugh. Loved this little side trip. Thanks Adrian for a cool tour!

Google
A perfect place for a family with young kids to have fun, laugh and learn. The tour guide Jack an amazing young man was funny and helpful. They have a gift shop, restrooms and a huge parking area. The road is not paved, but in a good shape. A must visit place around mount Rushmore / rapid ciry area.

Alexander K

Google
Okay! Must visit to get bragging rights on having a Michael Jackson lean photo! But on a serious note, this place is one of the few on this earth that offers a gravitational anomaly and makes you feel “different.” I’m not going to talk too much on this as I firmly believe that everyone should form their own opiates on their unique experience. All I can say folks is - certainly visit!

Yelp
I'd like to start by saying our tour guide, I think his name was Sam?, was amazing. Loved their jokes and was just a fun person to have as our tour guide. He is by far the reason I'm giving 5 stars over an average score. He honestly made it great for us. I think we were the only people without kids, which should have been our first clue that maybe we weren't the target audience for this place, but it gave us Gravity Falls vibes so we bought our tickets and waited for our guide. They weren't kidding when they said the tour could make you feel dizzy and possibly nauseous, because boy did we feel dizzy and nauseous for awhile after. I don't want to give the details of the tour away, but I will say I had fun learning about gravity hot spots. If they ask you "does this look level to you?" If you say no the response is always "well it is" as they show you will a ball sitting on the surface that won't roll. It was overall pretty cool, but if I ever go back it'll probably be just for the gift shop. I'm glad I got to experience it once, but this is a place that I'm one and done with.

Yelp
This is an amusing roadside stop. It's unlike anything else we've done before. The tours are run by young people who are polite and funny. It's priced well and is a neat experience, especially for kids. If you have vertigo, don't do this haha! It can be a little disorienting.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
What a fun little place. Steep hills to get to the mystery cabin but a cute kitschy place with dedicated teen guides who try their best to engage.
google avatar

Dean V.

Yelp
This is a great little spot near Mt Rushmore. A nice little trail to the mystery houses. Its a great way to explore the different gravitational pulls in the area. Our tour guide, William was funny and informative about the Mystery Area. It's great educational spot to take the kids or just come as a couple. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Ben Z.

Yelp
This was actually a great little stop while exploring the black hills. Kids 11, 8, and 4 loved it. It kind of exceeded the six other adults expectations. One of our kids actually said this was their favorite stop we had out of our entire week in the Black Hills.
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
What a unique experience! Something that everyone needs to see for themselves. The tour lasted about 30 minutes. Our tour person, I believe her name was Emily, was funny and nice. We were very impressed with all the stuff she demonstrated inside the shack and on the grounds. The mystery's spots are fascinating! My daughter enjoyed being used as a tester for some of the gravity "tests". Also, she loved picking her own geode from the sand pit, for just $6 we got to take home the open geode as a souvenir. The employees at the register were very nice as well.

Yelp
Absolutely rude and terrible customer service. WARNING IT MIGHT MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN NOT BREATHE AND THROW UP SINCE THEY DONT WANNA TELL YOU THAT! Didn't finish, was told I could get a refund and the "manager" had the worst attitude of them all. The tour guide tells you to tip them at least 5 times before actually starting. Also the tour guide told my 9 year old daughter it was lame when she was asking where were from. ( asked the whole group) Another member of the party seen me sick after and said it was only 2 rooms and not worth paying for.

Lori R.

Yelp
This is a fun and interesting experience. It definitely messes with your head in many ways. Fun to try to figure out but also causes a strange sensation..
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Such a fun place to take the kids. We were really amazed by the events that occurred through the tour. Although it said the tour was about 40 minutes, it really was much shorter. A little higher priced than what I think is necessary and they do remind you, often, to tip your tour guide. That does annoy me.

Jacob N.

Yelp
The Cosmo was really cool and I like how the laws of physics are flipped , the tour guide was really nice made some funny jokes her name was Rylan the service was great and the tourist was great nothing really bad it was worth the money.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Cosmos is a fun little spot that is not only entertaining for kids but also for adults. A few demos and interactions are done by volunteers in your group, which made the experience more fun. Our guide was very entertaining and was willing to answer any questions. None of us felt rushed while we went through different rooms in the cabin, she allowed time for everyone to experience the areas and take pictures.

Becky W.

Yelp
pretty neat place. I remember coming here as a kid in 1988/89. My youngest is 11 and she was so floor at the "magic" of this.
google avatar

Sean N.

Yelp
Everything I thought and wanted it to be. Cheesy jokes and stories mixed with audience participation. All in all it was a great roadside attraction.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
This is a cool little tourist trap. There are a lot of funky and weird things going on that everyone on the family will love. Our guide was awesome and did great work when she grabbed my kids to volunteer. Totally worth the price of admission
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
I've been here twice and loved it each time. Essentially it's a location in a hill where things are strategically built to fool your eyes and senses into believing up is down and left is right. But if you're willing to take the experience knowing it's a trick, it's even more fun. The same reasons adults go to "magic" shows, though they (should) know there is no real magic involved. As an adult I had a lot of fun. But our 6 year old was even more enthralled. His eyes bought the trick all the way and his experience was magical. I have seen several people who do get a sense of vertigo though nothing is moving, so maybe take your meds before you come. Adult or kid, this is a fun experience that'll either leave you with a sense of wonder or make you think, "How could I build something like that?"

Yelp
The cosmos mystery area was very cool and very strange! We went to Mt Rushmore in March and wanted to come, but it was closed for the season. We made another stop from Colorado to South Dakota on our way to Minnesota and to our delight it was open. We had the best tour guide her name is Isabell. The spot itself is unexplainable and weird and just worth seeing. We also did the little geod deal where our 7 year old dug in the sand for a geod and then they crank a machine to crack it open and see the crystal inside. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
We had a fantastic time here! The price was worth it because you will never see anything like this! It was very unexpected! Heads up though if you have walking, stability, or health issues this is not the attraction for you. The structures are very difficult to keep yourself upright and it feels like you have intense weight on your body. Our guide was incredible and funny. You go in groups. Tickets are bought in the gift shop and if desired you can get an additional ticket to dig for I think geodes as well. Gift shop has snacks. I think food is normally sold too but it was closed for covid. Go check this out. It is off the freeway in the middle of nothing but fitting given how unusual it is. About a 45-60 minute tour.
google avatar

Yelp
Have you ever experienced a place where the laws of nature seem to have gone completely berserk? Have you ever stood on the wall or felt an unexplainable force? Here at the Cosmos you can experience all of this and much, much more. Cosmos Mystery Area is a natural phenomena that is intriguing and mind boggling. I have no clue what this means. But go to the Cosmos!

Jane A.

Yelp
This is all about illusion, illusion, illusion. Very clever & fun indeed but they try to tell gullible tourists it's mysterious, can't explain it . Yeah. Hi I can't believe they have gotten away with their gimmicks for 50 years.
google avatar

Charity G.

Yelp
This was the first time visiting a vortex. The staff were young teens, very respectful, fun and informative. My 7 year old got a bit scared, my 3 year old, husband and I got a bit queezy and could feel the force. It was really cool. I wished it was a bit longer.
google avatar

Dana A.

Yelp
We did not enjoy this attraction. All four of us felt sick during the first demonstration. Felt like throwing up. Other people on the tour seemed to have fun but it wasn't for us.

Glenn S.

Yelp
This seemed like a fun way to pass some time on a Sunday afternoon for a family of five. Reviews seemed to be good so we spent the money to buy tickets online. We showed up 15 minutes before our reserved time and found a bunch of teenage employees sitting on counters and seemingly annoyed to have to get up to check us in. The tour guide was simply going through the motions making stale jokes in a monotone voice. The worst part is that at one point, and elderly lady from another family added to our group lost her balance and fell and needed help to get up and exit the room. The tour guide didn't offer to help or even ask if she was OK. My 14 year old son and I helped her up and out of the room. I would not recommend this as a way to spend an hour, and that is about what it takes to go through including the 10 minute wait for your tour group to start. Save your money.
google avatar

Irma S.

Yelp
My husband and I took our kids (13, 8 and 3) while in Keystone and we all had a great time. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised w the experience, even though we were lightheaded for the remainder of the day. I think adults felt the "weirdness" more l, as our brains were struggling to make things out more that the kids, who simply went w the flow. I think that the price is very reasonable and very worth the experience. Would I do it again....prob not, but I encourage others to try it out.,

Krista D.

Yelp
Way back in the 80s when I was a 9 y/o kid, my family went to Cosmos Mystery Area during our Mt. Rushmore vacation week, and that experience stuck with me more than anything else we did that trip. Flash forward to today: I took my 7- and 5-year old kids to Cosmos to see if they would be as floored as I had been. Many of the demo's were the same as I remember them, but the impact was the same for the kids - WOW! (Adults can look up how gravity hills happen). Not for anyone who has vertigo: I don't, but still felt woozy for a bit after exiting the cabin.
google avatar

Jason N.

Yelp
I enjoyed it. It is exactly what it says it is. I never get ill with stuff like this, but did here. I think my 5 year old son had a blast and loved "fighting" the gravitational illusions...nothing bad to bring it to 3 stars, just is what it is...I bought a shot glass and has a fun time. It is a series of cabin illusions to mess with your mind and balance! Worth going once!

Yelp
Total old school tourist trap, but entertaining if you have kids. This place is located near Keystone, SD on the way to Mount Rushmore. Located down a long dirt drive you come upon this 'mystical area'. The premise of this place is that long ago two young guys were out hiking looking for a place to build a cabin when they happened upon an old cabin in the woods. Things were so strange and unique here that they decided to fix up the cabin and the rest is history as they now share these wonders with you (for around $10 per person). The tour is around 30 minutes long and one starts about every 30 minutes. So really this place has two structures built on a hillside and everything is at crazy angles, so there are optical illusions galore. The guides are younger kids and engage multiple people on the tour to participate and have some scripted bad jokes. Overall though, our guide tried hard, was engaging and if you don't think about every little thing it was pretty entertaining, and especially so for the under 12 crowd in your party. As I am a fan of this old school schtick, I enjoyed it.
google avatar

Devyn W.

Yelp
This was such an interesting experience. We had Alexis as our tour guide. She was fun, kind and kept her energy going. We had a small group (which I liked). This is a great place for kids. It will be about 30-45 mins. It will keep your interest, just remember to have fun while there. Not a place for grumpy people

Jenna S.

Yelp
3 stars because to me, this was a TOTAL tourist trap. It was fun but if you have half a brain you can figure out what is going on. The BEST part about Cosmos Mystery Area was our tour guide, BELLA, she was awesome!! She was funny and really tried to get the group involved, it was like 930 in the morning to many of us were still half asleep, but she was friendly, upbeat and positive and SHE is really what I enjoyed about this attraction ... give that girl a raise !
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
Very cool place located near Mount Rushmore. If your stopping at one might as well do both. Not expensive and they have a nice gift shop. We did the tour and maybe got slightly ill. I didn't mind it nor did my kids but my husband was a bit green faced. It didn't matter thought because we were all smiling ear to ear.
google avatar

Marina G.

Yelp
The place is really cool and definitely worth a trip once. Why I'm giving it such a low star rating is because of COVID precautions. They have none. We were actually quite freaked out after this tour. There were about 20-25 people on the tour from all over the United States and nobody was required to wear masks. We were the only family with masks on. Staff didn't wear masks, guests weren't required to either. There was no hand sanitizer available and no social distancing measures taken whatsoever. Instead they crammed all of us in small rooms and there was no way to stay 6 feet away from other people. All people had to touch railings/ handles to get to and out of the rooms. There was absolutely no way to keep everyone safe. As a business you have the responsibility to keep your customers safe and this business has failed miserably on this front. I understand these are different times, but most businesses adjusted marvelously to the new "normal". At least have your staff wear masks and require guests to. And perhaps keep your tours to 10 people?

Maddy K.

Yelp
This was fun! We went on a Saturday, so it was quite busy. The tour felt a bit rushed, as there was a tour right in front of us and right behind us. We were still able to experience the "mystery", which was the craziest feeling and probably would have made us sick if we were in the cabin too long. Would recommend for everyone, but especially families!
google avatar

Celina P.

Yelp
My fiancé and I walked out mid-way of the tour and the cashier was nice enough to offer a refund. We declined the refund and explained the attraction just wasn't for us. Overall, staff was nice, but we found this place uninteresting.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Whilst preparing for my annual adventure, with my fiancé, I stumbled across the Cosmos Mystery Area. The reviews garnered my curiosity and I added this stop to the list of attractions I had to visit during my vacation. Alas, my intrigue was premature as this dog and pony show was nothing more than smoke and mirrors. For starters, having a very young, high school age girl who had limited vocabulary outside of a poorly written script wasn't good. Secondly, the "mysterious" portions of the "tour" were easily figured out. My apparent disgust was written all over my face, it seemed to bother some of the other tour participants who had younger children. I was told to, "...just go with it.." al the whole being given dirty glares. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the guide interacted with a young, female volunteer. During their interaction the guide asked things like, "...do you pee in the pool.? Do you fart? Do you cheat on tests? Do you steal?" All the while the young girl was fearful of failing from a chair for "lying". Needless to say that after witnessing only a brief portion of the tour we had enough, we left without the "guide" noticing she was now two people lighter. The male cashier inside the souvenir shop was obviously startled when he saw us walk back in. It was apparent when he stated, "they sent you back in this way...?" He then tried to offer me some money back in order to "make things right". I was polite even though his statement was completely offensive in nature. All I can say is avoid this if you're over the age of 10, don't let your children "volunteer" and don't let children conduct your tours.

Mike S.

Yelp
It's fun if you've never been here before, however our tour guide was not engaged in the presentation. He acted rushed and his delivery was poor. In reflection, it was a high school boy that was making a buck as his summer job, however you pay good money for this attraction. I'd skip the geode mine, you have to dig around a huge sandbox like a cat to find a geode and then you break it in half with a modified car jack.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
It's a little bit pricey but other than that it was great staff was nice and helpful with pictures loved the rock busting I don't think I would come back but it was fun for the first time
google avatar

Kylie P.

Yelp
We went to cosmos last year on the 3rd of July it was really interesting and creepy but overall very cool. On the 3rd of July this year I found the penny that I crushed at the cosmos in the cupholder of the backseat it was really weird because we use the seat almost everyday and finding it exactly a year from when we went was super creepy. Coincidence; I think not
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
I gave a three star rating because there was no warning for vertigo before paying. It took a few minutes before I was so dizzy that I had to leave the tour. It sucked. Other than that, the area is beautiful and the people working there were great.

Izzy G.

Yelp
It says it opens at 9 but they don't start doing tours until 9:40 like what are we supposed to do for FOURTY MINUTES?! Someone tried to help find us a tour guide to let us start early and no one was willing to. There was also two other groups that got there right at 9 so we all we just stuck. We just left because its not worth it.
google avatar

Oren P.

Yelp
Having previously visited similar sites in California, Oregon, and Montana, I was really looking forward to comparing this one - but apparently arrived after the last tour of the day had started and was not allowed to join it in progress - even if I paid more for less. Being told to come back the next day doesn't work for many visitors not planning on staying another night simply to have a short over-priced tour of something similar to what they may have seen/experienced elsewhere. If you have not previously been to a place like this, you may be intrigued and enjoy coming here - and benefit from not having other places with far better customer service to compare. Enjoy.
google avatar

Charli M.

Yelp
Extremely fun! The demonstrations were awesome and our tour guide, Emily, made it especially interactive for the little ones. Could lead to a discussion on visual illusion and perspective if your kid is scientifically minded, or just a sense of wonder. If your family likes magic shows, you'll like this. Just be prepared for some walking. Nothing extreme, but the path isn't the best.
google avatar

Annette W.

Yelp
Kaylee was a huge part of what made this fun. She was so full of energy & made you want to be excited about what you were seeing. Whether you buy into the "hot spot" theory or not, it was def a cool place to visit with some interesting demos. Worth stopping once to check it out. Could have been a little longer for the price it cost to get in. Overall, was a good time!
google avatar

Brittany M.

Yelp
It's a fun little place to stop if you're in the area. Easy to get to, there is a small dirt road you have to drive down. Each staff member was friendly. The tour last between 20-30 minutes, but they do a great job of entertaining you the whole time. Crowd participation is a large part of the show, so be prepared to be called on. Also it doesn't matter how much you know this place is just a trick, your mind and body still feel like things just aren't right. It's a little more expensive than it should be, but it's a tourist trap so that's to be expected. If I was in the area again and had time to spare, would I go again? Sure!
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
I could see this being really great for kids, but even as an adult without any we still had fun at the Cosmos. It was a nice excuse to pull over and have a little silly fun on the road trip. The only downside was having to turn into this little road off the highway without a proper exit. A little scary but maybe that put us in just the right mood for the Cosmos.

Denise F.

Yelp
Too expensive for the experience! Might be worth half of what they charge. My teenagers weren't impressed.
google avatar

Fairlight B.

Yelp
Perfect combination of interesting experience and charming tour guide. Abby was very friendly, fun and informative! Lots of engaging audience participation with kiddos in the group. We were totally wowed. We are from out of state so don't have an old history with it being a "cheesy tourist trap." I'm so happy we picked this and Bear Country USA for our time and money on the highway between Rapid City and Mount Rushmore. There are a lot of options on that road! We sought out Cosmos after reading recommendations on travel blogs.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Expensive and over-rated. There is no "mystery" to it... just visual illusions. Our 9 year old son figure it out. The "tour" lasted no more than 15 minutes, if that, and was disappointing.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
My experience jibes with the other reviews. Definitely a good 30 minute diversion from a long road trip. Our guide was great and enthusiastic. She tried to get as many people as possible involved in the demonstrations and the kids (none of them ours) seemed to enjoy it. As did the adults. No matter how much you read and know about how these places work, your brain will still be tricked. I needed to gather myself before trying to drive out of here.
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Nice little family amusement place near Keystone. Fun and entertaining. Pay a little more and you can get a geode to cut open.

Boris U.

Yelp
One of the must see places if coming through the area with kids. The visit won't take more than an hour - tours are half an hour in lengths - but they are lots of fun and kids are amazed. The guides are clearly enjoying giving tours, so that helps too
