12 Bewildering Hills Where Gravity Seems to Work in Reverse

"“Have you ever experienced a place where the laws of nature seem to have gone completely berserk? Have you ever stood on the wall or felt an unexplainable force?” So reads the promotional information on the Cosmos Mystery Spot, where they offer a 30 minute long tour of these “berserk” natural forces. Of course, the secret to the dozens of mystery areas, magnetic hills, and “gravity-vortexes,” around the world lies not in any paranormal force, but in the peculiarities of our own minds. As our brains attempt to orient themselves, we use horizontal and vertical cues around us to establish up and down. Deprived of a horizon line, and given misleading cues – like a cabin built on a 20 degree tilt – our brains can make some surprising mistakes. Even more curiously, when our bodies are put at an angle, as happens when standing inside the Cosmos Mystery Spot’s slanted identical cabins, the perceptual distortion doubles, increasing these odd illusions even more. The perceived distortions are due to a forced perspective which makes shapes appear larger or smaller due to a distorted background. A classic example of this is an Ames room in which people appear to grow in size as they walk across it. To make a mystery spot of your own it is surprisingly simple. Build a small room and lift one side of the house until the room tilts about twenty five degrees. Second, disguise the fact that the house is tilted by giving visitors incorrect cues. Build the house on a slope. Make it difficult to see a horizon line, and place altered objects and furniture to make everything appear normal. Invite people to experience the gravity-vortex for themselves." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Talk about a place where everything makes your brain feel askew! At the beginning of the tour, one will notice many of the saplings are bent together in an arch, as if windswept from two directions. That’s particularly odd since that would ordinarily happen in just one direction. Then, as the tour progresses, the mind is prepped for backwards of natural. I won’t spoil it by too many details, but the feeling I had was extremely peculiar, very much akin to how my head felt atop Pike’s Peak in the thin oxygen at 14,100+ feet above sea level. When the standard of what is normal is off, it’s just weird. Great venue for the kiddos, as well. Most of it is an optical illusion, but it is very well done, very uncanny. Added to our children’s tickets for a nominal fee was the opportunity to crack open a geode. This was fun for them. Great venue for something “different.”

The Cosmos was our family’s favorite spot in the Badlands. The tour guide was hilarious and really knew his stuff about the strange phenomenon there. He interacted with the guests and made everyone feel comfortable enough to participate. The demonstration was short, but for our family and kids, it was definitely worth it. They have scheduled tours, so we had to wait for the next one—definitely check their website for more information. We totally recommend checking it out if you’re planning a family trip

We had a great time. Madison (Steve) was a great guide. Our group of 11 had fun time with all of the demonstrations. Madison did great at pulling in people from different groups for demos. Great job. But also, if you have vertigo or balance issues, be aware this really messes with your head. ☺️

A must stop for rather you’re visiting deadwood, Sturgis or Mt Rushmore. As if you’re in some sci fi movie or a horror flick there is no way to explain how incredible the experience is and pictures just don’t do it justice. What a cool experience for adults and kids alike.

Interesting play on vision and perception. Very cool stop. Loved watching the kids soak it in. Tour guide really adds to the experience. A bit of a physical challenge to negotiate the tour due to inclines.
