13 Incredible Space Museums in the U.S. Every Traveler Should Visit

"Located in Hutchinson, Kansas, this museum houses over 13,000 artifacts, and its collection is so large that it's only rivaled by the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. It also has the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. There are five different venues here, but the main exhibit is the Hall of Space Museum, which focuses on the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the United States, with actual historic artifacts from around the world. The collection spans from World War II's V-1 flying bomb missile and V-2 rocket, which laid the groundwork for space travel, to Cold War spacecraft such as the Gemini 10, Liberty Bell 7, and a Soviet Vostok capsule. The Moonshot Gallery showcases one of the three Apollo White Rooms used for actual launches, flown Apollo spacesuits, the Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey, and a moon rock. In the Grand Lobby, you can stand beneath a full-scale replica of the space shuttle Endeavour alongside a flown SR-71 Blackbird spy plane and a towering 109-foot-tall Titan rocket." - Iona Brannon Iona Brannon Iona Brannon is a journalist with a love for food and travel. Went there as a scout trip/unit. Absolutely wonderful to visit the activities were perfect for both the kids and adults! The planetarium was AMAZING! The museum was quite interesting to partake in, lots of really cool fact and artifacts to see.

This has been one of my all time favorite museums my entire life. After revisiting after two decades, I am not disappointed. This museum has the largest collection of Soviet and American flown spacecraft in the world, largest collection of flown Soviet space craft outside of Moscow, and the second largest collection of flown US spacecraft outside of Washington. There are great summer camps, classes and activities for kids, and more. Everything is a flown artifact, a genuine backup (Sputnik 1 for example), or a full-scale recreation. Their SpaceWorks restores artifacts for museums around the world, and works with Hollywood set designers for blockbuster films. This is truly a world class museum, and the only Smithsonian Partner in Kansas. It's surprising such an impactful and world class museum is nestled away in little ole Hutchinson Kansas. It's a great getaway for adults and children alike! You know you're somewhere special when the first thing you're greeted by on entry is a flown SR-71 Blackbird. My favorite exhibit is the German exhibit. There is a genuine V-1, V-2 Buzz Bomb, and a genuine ME-163 Komit engine in a sub-basement that is styled to look like a WW2 Bunker. For people who have mobility issues; this museum is fully handicapped accessable! There are elevators and wheelchair lifts.

Google
A very interesting and informative afternoon. It's nice that they have taken every age group into account. I'm old and had a good time, and I also could see my grandkids hanging a blast. Bring a jacket! It's really, really cold in there. I would call first and see how busy they expect it to be that day. If it's going to be pretty slow, then it might be best to buy tickets when you're there. Theater prices for food.

Kansas P.

Google
Much better than I expected. Spent 2.5 hours there looking at and reading the exhibits. You cou blow thru in 90 minutes if you don't like reading scientific and historical info. There are additional features such as a dome theater which I will view on another visit.

Mrs H.

Google
This place was awesome. The kids enjoyed every second of it. We saw 2 different movies in the theater domes. They really loved the science lab. The science lab was very informational and she involved the kids. The museum was amazing. The cafe and theater concessions were expensive.

Tony R.

Google
This is a really cool place where you could spend the entire day! We literally closed the place down and still didn't get to do everything! Well worth the drive off the interstate! The gem for us was the command module Odyssey from Apollo 13! Staff is uber friendly and made for a fun time. It wasn't crowded, but it was Thursday, which made the visit quite enjoyable. The planetarium shows were topped notch! If you're into space, put the Cosmosphere on your must do list!

Michael W.

Google
Hutchinson, KS has a gem among gems when it comes to Air and Space museums. Do not miss this one. You’re greeted in the lobby with the sight and within reach a flown SR-71 and it gets better around every corner. If you love space flight this is Valhalla.

Kathrina B.

Google
Very cool place to go. You can learn lots of space & history. They have several movies that you can watch, which I did not because my grandsons didn't want to see any. As far as buying tickets in advance, that would be your preference. The time that I did have to wait in line, It wasn't terribly long. They also have a cafe on site and they have a very nice gift shop as well. There it's also a kid zone where smaller children can go in and play and make things with an adult.

J T.

Yelp
High quality air and space museum with amazing quantity of artifacts and Imax theater! Definitely worth visiting!
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
An amazing collection of flown space artifacts! So glad that I visited. My only complaint is the lighting of some exhibits needs improvement.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Cosmosphere kind of makes me want to live in Hutchinson, so that I could send my children to their space summer camp! They have day camps and overnight camps that immerse kids in the space experience, and they're solving problems, landing on the Moon, building settlements, and doing all kinds of STEM stuff. But even if you don't live in the area, if you do have kids with you when you visit Cosmosphere, be sure to visit the CosmoKids area, where there's lots of things to see, touch and explore. This STEM-focused area just for kids makes all of this space info accessible to little people. It was pretty cool seeing the Apollo 13 command module, lunar module, rockets, and all of the displays that outline humankind's journeys into outer space. They have a significant collection of space artifacts here, so I highly recommend this museum to people who are interested in space. It's worth a visit!
google avatar

Tracy R.

Yelp
This is a must visit, must see and must take the tour! This was not on my radar while visiting and my sister in law recommended as she's from here! What an amazing and important museum full of history that is vital to our existence here on earth. For kids it's a great place to see rockets, historical memorabilia from the WWII to the Space Race and a space rock. The Cosmosphere has a gift shop and cafe as well.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Super cool, interactive spot to learn for kids and adults ! We went while visiting family in Wichita. This spot is about an hour outside of Wichita but worth the drive. So much to learn about NASA and space and the different vessels and planes we use in the air ! The place is large and good for groups (there were 15 of us). Highly recommend checking them out!
google avatar

William E.

Yelp
First rate air and space museum, not where you would expect one. Interesting and informative displays chronologicaling the space race. Nice plus is actual Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules.
google avatar

Garrett S.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite museum I've been to. If you like space, artifacts, and history, you would love this place. Got tons of artifacts, tons to do and it's really fun. I have nothing bad to say highly recommend.
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
This gift shop is so darn cute! Candi was the employee in there and she was very helpful with finding what we were looking for. The gift shop was very well organized, and prices are honestly not bad for many things- as they have clearance items as well. Also, they have military and veteran discount of 10%. You have to let them know before the purchase so they can adjust the price.

Lorraine M.

Yelp
Has an amazing movie theater with wonderful movies, and also a cool space and air museum.

Brenda G.

Yelp
would have given 5 stars. however the Cosmo Kids area was very disappointing. would have expected more for the kids to do.

Tiffany W.

Yelp
A great improvement to watch movies compared to Hutch B&B theatre (if u can acclimate to the surround effects).
google avatar

Cayden F.

Yelp
I liked it a lot more in 2017 but Its still nice to go there, the dome theater is pretty cool too they have some nice events from time to time and a cosy gift shop
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
I'm not sure why, living in Kansas for most of my life, I had never visited the Cosmosphere before, but I'm so glad I finally made it! We got the "All Access" passes and spent more than five hours here and there was never a dull moment. Science, space exploration, history...all very well presented. Special accolades to the young man who did the Dr. Goddard's Lab presentation--what fun!
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
The best collection of space stuff ever and how did it end up in Kansas, Worth the 3 hour trip. Priced nicely and offers law enforcement and military discounts. planetarium and 4k digital dome theater and simulator all included in the day pass.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
I love the cosmosphere! Whether you're a more casual historian or someone that nerds out on it (like me), there's plenty to see and read there. The IMAX theater is always awesome also. There's so much to marvel at that man accomplished.
google avatar

Dustyn M.

Yelp
The Cosmosphere. They do important work and it's interesting but also underwhelming. If you have young kids this would be a great place to visit as they are sure to be entertained.. IF they like science and space. If they bore easily, maybe not the place to go. The staff is very nice, it's clean, and mostly interesting. The layout is a bit confusing and leaves a bit to be desired. After going through the main museum everything else kind of falls flat. The main museum part itself documents the space race, and the development of rockets from pre-wwII untik the end of the Apollo program. A lot of the information is repeated multiple times and starts to feel redundant. There are also some noticeable omissions in the history of space travel in regards to some important figures and events that are not addressed and, personally, I think would be more interesting if it included events in the space program up to modern day, and if it had more interactivity. Overall not a bad way to spend three or four hours, but I wouldn't make it my only reason to go to Hutchinson if you aren't from there or close to it.
google avatar

Jake P.

Yelp
This is the single best museum I've been to in years, maybe ever. If you're interested in space, air, and/or history, this is your place. As soon as you walk in an actual SR-71A greets you. Look down, Liberty Bell 7, look past those two and you see half of a space shuttle. The further I went, the more amazing it was. This collection is second to only the air and space museum at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. I mean, come on, Apollo 13's Odyssey is in there. The real one. I was very close to tearing up multiple times because of what many of these artifacts did for the United States during the Cold War and Space Race. This museum is stunning. Do yourself a favor and check it out, it's unbelievable.

Diane P.

Yelp
Small space centered attraction as compared to others with some areas undergoing construction. Admission prices are confusing, so watch the small print. There are movies to watch and planetarium shows to see but many things are "add on". What we did see was well displayed and informative.

Kathy W.

Yelp
The staff at the Kansas Cosmosphere was not only friendly but enthusiastic! The day we visited a storm hit the area knocking out power. The entire staff was not only professional and took care of all the visitors but they maintained a positive friendly attitude. While they waited for the power to be restored they even entertained the kids by making ice cream with them. It's not every day you visit a place where the staff is this great! Well done!
google avatar

Anne M.

Yelp
It was nice and lots to look at but my kids were bored quick, but that's typical teens

Larry F.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. The amount of authentic space flown and test items here rivals Air and Space in DC. Yes, it's that good. Don't even think to talk it down it because it's in the middle of the country. Don't be an uppity liberal and think the best this country has to offer is only in a coastal city. Museum, theater, planetarium we're all top shelf. Dr Goddard's lab was very cool and a nice surprise. Brett (in the lab) put on a tremendous program. Easily the best $50 for my wife and my entertainment i have spent in a long time. I spent nine hours in the building with no food breaks. It was really that good.
google avatar

Milack T.

Yelp
An AMAZING Attraction Hidden In the Middle of Kansas EVERYONE Should Visit. Plan to spend your whole day inside a labyrinth of authentic, incredible, and historic space artifacts. The Cosmosphere has a lot to offer and I recommend getting the pass/ticket that gets you everything because everything is cool, fun, and informative for all ages--young to old. We showed up at its opening on Saturday and ran through the museum, saw a planetarium show, a movie in the dome theater, a live science experiment show, and a simulator. You will easily spend six hours doing everything, so plan on enjoying. Check out the pictures! Little do people know, folks from the Cosmosphere were tapped by NASA to help restore the Apollo-era Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR). In 2018, at the Cosmosphere's SpaceWorks restoration facility, conservators carefully took apart the more than half-century old consoles and brought them back to life. According to Sandra Tetley, the historic preservation officer and real property officer at Johnson Space Center, "They will be backlit with LED lighting so the visitor's experience is such that when you are in the viewing room looking in, all of the lights and monitors will be the same as when we were landing on the moon." I highly recommend going and going back. I can't wait to go back soon!

Nathan R.

Yelp
great history of not only space flight but everything that led up to it from WW2 on. Reno County residents can enter free
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
This place is worth your time! I really enjoyed the museum and also watched the space movie.
google avatar

Theresa G.

Yelp
We come from California to visit family and every time we do, we go to the Cosmosphere. We discover something new everytime, and it never gets old.
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
Must visit place when you are in Kansas. The selection of the exponents and story presentation is a true world class! We were really impressed of the planetarium, the show was a true combination of art and science. Don't forget the kids play room for your toddler. Highly recommend for all family!
google avatar

B R.

Yelp
Top notch displays and very educational. We've had numerous guests come from out of state and they're blown away by this place
google avatar

Zoila C.

Yelp
First time visitors. Loved learning about the moon landing! It was entertaining and informative. I never knew the flag planted on moon had wires running through it which makes it look like it's flying. Guess that debunks the conspiracy nuts theory on that one lol.
google avatar

Christian K.

Yelp
This is an educational experience, it's space, there is an SR-71 blackbird to ogle in the lobby. If you are a Hutchinson resident it is free, pretty snazzy gift shop with some cool swag. A theatre I have not been to in part that whole thing since 2020. I know a few locals who have not been to the cosmosphere, I had to quit hanging out with them, mostly kidding. Here it is space travel is a huge thing this monkey man has much it can do here though it also has opportunities to grow larger than this planet. Knowing space and the space race is a huge part of the American dream, let alone other entities that dream.p

Nathan C.

Yelp
If your kid wants to be an astronaut or learn something about space, this is the perfect place to take them. It has everything about space and more.
google avatar

Nicolaus O.

Yelp
Great place for kids. We love going to the imax there when they show movies. Also great for when family comes to visit.
google avatar

Donovan C.

Yelp
Wow! I drove 3 hours and 7 minutes from Overland Park, KS just to check it out, and it didn't disappoint. So much information and actual artifacts about Space! The majority of it, though, focuses on USA vs Russia in the Space Race and landing on the moon. It's not as interactive as other museums I've visited, but it's still great. If you visit, you MUST see the Apollo 11 movie feature AND Black Hole movie in the Planetarium, if they're still I'll available. I loved it there!
google avatar

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Interesting, fun, and all together awesome. If you're thinking of visiting the Cosmosphere do. It's well worth it.

Steve K.

Yelp
Incredible museum. Space artifacts that simply don't exist anywhere else. Absolutely amazing museum.
google avatar

Keeley M.

Yelp
Wow! Anyone studying US WWII history through the mid-70's should go to this museum. This is how history comes alive. The museum starts with Nazi Germany's quest to build the V-1 missiles, which post war leads to the arms/space race between Russia and the US. The exhibits and stories perfectly weave the histories of war, politics, and space into one amazing view. I wish every school kid could see history through this expansive lens, vs getting 3 separate histories from a textbook. Go! If you skip the IMAX and Planetarium, the main hall can be experienced in 1.5 hours. My only recommendation for improvement is to have an audio tour to accompany the exhibits, b/c reading all the dense materials does get tiresome and can be more challenging for students to get the complexities of all that was happening in the early days of space development.
google avatar

Phon W.

Yelp
This is a really cool museum. It is one of those where you walk around and read about things though. It's not too big and may be kind of boring for a small child, but all in all it's super educational
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
Amazing place to visit! Everyone should stop in at least once a year. They are always doing something fun and showing movies on the weekends just adds to this place's cool factor.
google avatar

Celeste W.

Yelp
Really cool place, learned a few things about the moon landing I had no idea about! Definitely worth a visit
google avatar

TE T.

Yelp
If I had not grown up around DC and been to the Air and Space museum, I assume this would have been more epic of an experience for me. They have a few nice (space ship) replicas and a few real pieces of space tech along with an authentic stealth jet in the main lobby. Save your money on the virtual ride though, not worth the (over)price. There's a tour that is worth the free price of admission, that ends with a moon rock in a glass box. All in all it's a great option for something to do for the day, if you find yourself board in Hutchinson. The staff is nice and the kids will enjoy some of it. (Was hard to keep my kids interested during the tour, but they did enjoy seeing the big stealth and replica discovery shuttle...
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
I grew up in Hutchinson, and yearly field trips to the Cosmosphere make up a big part of my childhood. After visiting again for the first time after 5 years, I was impressed all over again. It is very hard to believe a place like this can be found in Middle-of-Nowhere, KS! The Cosmosphere started out as a small planetarium at State fairgrounds After a few years it outgrew the facilities and moved to its current location and now has a space artifact collection second only to the Smithsonian. Some of the sights: A giant moon rock, the Apollo 13 Command Module, a 109-foot Titan rocket. Ooh, and the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest plane ever built, suspended from the ceiling in the entryway is very impressive. My senior prom was held there, right underneath the Bird! Be sure to catch a movie at the IMAX theater, but if you have a weak stomach, make sure you have something to barf into. And buy some space ice cream!
google avatar

Kay D.

Yelp
What's the good thing about living in Southern California, but being guilted into going to middle-of-nowhere-Hutchinson, Kansas every other year or so to visit your grandparents? THE COSMOSPHERE! I've been here at least ten times over the course of my life, and it's just as exciting as an adult as it was as a child...only now I have the added nostalgia that eeks from my childhood memories. This town is literally in the middle of nowhere, but somehow the Cosmosphere has become a world class, Smithsonian affiliated, NASA certified museum. They have things like the actual Apollo 13 capsule, the Sputnik II (which never launched), a full size replica of a space shuttle, and more! This place is huge and is definitely worthy of big city status. Don't forget to go to the gigantonormous IMAX theater or see an observatory show! AWESOME.

Trevor M.

Yelp
Great place to visit, cool exhibits and lots of neat artifacts. If you're at all interested in aeronautics and space, you'll enjoy your visit to the cosmosphere.
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
The Cosmosphere is a true star in Hutchinson KS! When you enter the lobby you're standing under a SR-71A Blackbird! Jim who greeted us said they built the lobby around it. What a sight! Jim was kind and gave us an overview of the highlights before we got started. To touch on a few, they have an IMAX digital dome theatre, Planetarium, and Dr. Goddard's Lab shows. I'll upload a picture with the details of the various galleries. My friend and I were impressed with all of the exhibits and spent the entire afternoon. You may wish to check their showtimes online at cosmo.org.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
This is worth, with, worth the stop. A childhood favorite. I love coming here and bringing the kids.
google avatar

Delbert F.

Yelp
Been coming here for decades. And each time it's a thrill. Love the authentic US and USSR space artifacts - original capsules, space suits, Astronaut gear etc etc. And the IMAX dome movies are always good. One could spend a whole day enjoying the place. Great For all ages. Speaking of, the programs for kids - Dr Goddard's Lab and the Space Camps make me wish I was a kid again.
google avatar

Ann W.

Yelp
I truly have mixed feelings about the Cosmosphere. There are a lot of really cool space relics here, including the fully reconstructed Apollo 13 capsule that was painstakingly pulled from the ocean floor and put back together in Hutchinson. A person could easily spend 3-4 hours wandering through and learning a great deal of history about the space race. Where they lose a star is overall maintenance. There are some exhibits where stuff is missing and others where the video no longer shows, audio that goes with video cannot be heard, etc. This museum could truly be an epic experience, but the run-down condition of some exhibits detracts from how special this place really is.

Jim H.

Yelp
Movie night is a great deal! Two IMAX tickets, popcorn, and two drinks for $20 is awesome!
google avatar

Geary J.

Yelp
Granted I was expecting a small building full of airplanes and old men with remote control planes grumping about the weather, wow was I wrong! As we got within a couple of blocks I saw the tops of the rockets above the tree line and I realized that this was going to be fun! I would rate the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center as on par or even better than the Johnson Space Center outside Houston. It was well worth the time and if you've not been please devote an entire day for it, you'll need it and you'll want to have the time to do and see everything!
google avatar

Chad P.

Yelp
This place was amazing! It didn't look like much from the streets but once I got in and discovered that most everything was underground, I knew I would be in for a treat. My friend and I spent nearly all day there so it was definitely worth the price of admission plus a movie. I love the exhibits highlighting how the Nazis developed rockets that the Americans and Soviets later took to develop their own rockets and eventually space programs. All the history was so detailed and then laid out in all the exhibits. By the time we got to the Moon, I had to stop reading everything because there was still just so much to read and we were running out of time. I will definitely go back in the future and finish reading everything!
