I was a little skeptical because of the affordable price, but I have definitely spent more in San Jose for less impressive accommodations. Firstly, the housekeeping staff keep this place spotless!! Everything is so clean! The staff is very nice and the location is supreme. Just a minute or 2 walk to La California bar district and lots of great restaurants. 15 minute walk to downtown. You also get access to the amenities at CR backpackers inn next door; pool, bar, restaurant. There are lots of shared bathrooms so you don't have to wait. They are big private bathrooms with nice hot water. The internet is strong and there is workspace available. Coffee is also free and available. The beds are extra comfy and the full size bed sleeps more like a queen. Definitely the best value I have found in my many trips to San Jose. Will stay again!

Stayed in the private suite. Our room was so big the bed was way more comfortable than I expected. The sheets were super soft. Across the street there is the backpackers hostel that's busy and more party atmosphere. Great place to socialize. Then coming back to a quiet comfortable room at the guesthouse is wonderful. The value for the place is unreal! I will stay again!

We stayed here for a couple of nights in August. Good hotel for the quality/price ratio. The best is his great location, really close to Barrio Escalante and walking distance from the center, but not as chaotic.

Never again! Bedbugs, dirt, wet laundry, and extremely rude staff. Our stay at Guesthouse Costa Rica was truly awful. I’ve travelled a lot, but this was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. – There were BEDBUGS in the bed. – The room was dirty, with stained walls and a bathroom that was not clean at all. The shower barely worked. – We paid 7,000 CRC for laundry. Dropped it off at 9:20 AM, picked it up at 10:10 PM – and it was still wet. No explanation, no apology. – The staff was incredibly rude and disrespectful. They gave us false information, refused to communicate in any of the three languages I speak, and laughed at me behind my back. – When I asked for the name of the manager, they refused and told me to “sneak out” of the reception. – At 10 PM, two men (one named Lukas) were unfriendly and disrespectful toward me. I was shocked and uncomfortable. – After so much mistreatment, I finally had to raise my voice – I simply couldn’t accept being talked to like that anymore. I was a normal guest, expecting basic respect and hygiene. What I got was the opposite. Avoid this place. It’s not like the pictures. Not clean. Not safe. And not professional.

DON'T GO THERE!! We were very disappointed with the hotel due to a few reasons: - personal was very unfriendly - when we wanted to wash our clothes, we paid for it in the morning to be finished at 8 pm. However, only after 1h of discussion, we got our laundry back at 10 pm. It was partly more dirty than before the washing and a large portion of it was not dry. - The beds where not clean, there where some insects in them - The whole room was not very clean including the towels Altogether it nearly destroyed our impression of Costa Rica! But in another Hotel I'm sure "Pura Vida" still lives.

Bad hotel. The room was so small, nothing to do with the photos on Booking.com. Really noisy, quite dark and the only window overlooks on the street so you have to keep the curtain closed if you don't want everyone to look at you all the time... And of course you have the noise of the cars passing by.

10/10 highly reccomend! This review is specifically for the workstation dorms. (The posted photos font do it justice) I have spent a significant amount of time here, and I am only tempted to give them a slightly lower rating because of something that has nothing to do with the hostel or staff, it's only because unfortunately there is a train that passes by frequently during the morning and parts of the evening that blows its horn SO EXTREMELY LOUD that it is very jarring. This is obviously NOT thier fault though, and realistically there is nothing they can do about that. So i dont want to lower my rating because aside from that, this is the nicest, cleanest, BEST hostel i've ever seen, with a beautiful coworking space, lovely inspirational quotes on the wall, quiet comfortable places to sit, pristinely clean floors, the option to go socialize at the 2nd more party-like hostel next door literally just 15 feet away if you want, with a kitchen, restaurant, a pool, free coffee & tea day & night, a strong wifi signal everywhere, cleanest bathrooms ever (i'm autistic, so i'm VERY picky about that) with very stable HOT water (not the creepy electric shower heads either, and they're full bathrooms for more privacy), there are good privacy curtains on the bunks, with electric outlets, usb ports, and a light inside each bunk, lovely wood bunks, clean & secure cubbies to lock your stuff for safety, cool code locks on the doors and they change the codes periodically for safety, the option for female only dorms (one of which has a beautiful quiet balcony to sit and relax or work), 24/7 front desk service, easy walking access to groceries (or grocery delivery), restauraunts, bars, bank & ATM, taxis or uber, and great prices! It's fantastic! They even let me recieve international packages mailed here to me!! Which is often quite difficult to do in Costa Rica because of unusual addresses compared to most countries. But i recieved my package quickly and safely with no hassle whatsoever. If it weren't for the train i'd be tempted to give them an 11/10. For a HOSTEL.... I'm very impressed. Great Job everyone!👍🏼 & Thank you so much for everything! I will keeep coming back (or continue recommending to others) because of how nice it is. 👏🏽💖👏🏽 ~ P.B. Oh i'd also like to add that they have a paid laundry service as well that is fairly affordable, only $4,000 crc for a small load. But you can only pay in cash, and you should expect to get your laundry back the next day, not same day. Side note: I do wish they had a place out back for a clothes line though.
