I hate to do this... I really wanted to like the place, but it was really blah.
I do geologic research in Costa Rica and have spent many a field season there in various parts of the country (Valle Central, Nicoya, Pacific coast). I've eaten many a meal in the country and at real restaurants, not tourist ones. Costa Rican food is rather simple, dare I say not very creative, but tastes great when prepared properly.
My friend and I showed up at 6pm on a Friday night. No one was there, no one at the door, no one in the restaurant. We wandered in a bit, said 'hello' a couple times, and eventually a nice lady came out, said hi, and seated us (after she turned the lights on in the place). Everything says they open at 5... I guess the day was slow. The decor is a bit Costa Rican, containing all the standard things you'll see in the touristy areas of the country. Above the entrance is a wall full of bottles and containers of Costa Rican food stuffs such as beers and sauces.
The food here is just blah. I got the beef casado, friend had it with chicken, and we shared the patacones. The patacones were meh and not too flavorful, the casado was also meh. The meats in particular were not simple seasoned pieces of meat like I'm used to from Costa Rica, but instead were stewed with a tomato sauce. Pretty unexpected, and downright blah. To drink, I was hopeful they had Pilsen (one of the 'other' beers from Costa Rica) since they had bottles of it on the wall... and alas, they did not. I got the standard Imperial instead. It wasn't that cold. Sodas were also had by both, they were badly mixed (ratios off) and semi flat. After the meal, I had hoped to at least enjoy a couple shots of guaro (aka gasoline hehe) and when I asked if they had any (since there were bottles of it on the display wall), she didn't know what I was asking for. So, a lot of fails... any place that claims to be Costa Rican and have a bar should have guaro let alone know what it is.
Service was very nice, but slow and pretty bad (food took forever, drink refills were nonexistent, and getting the check took forever) . The food, meh, and the price was a tad high. I'm sad this place could not be better... but oh well. Perhaps other dishes on the menu are good, but I figured I should judge it by the casado so I played it safe. At least the Lizano was good.
Now, the place was dead when we showed up, but from other reviews it seems like this place becomes pretty hot on the dance floor late night. Perhaps it is a great salsa hall... but restaurant... nah.
