I Stayed in the Haunted Hotel That Inspired 'The Shining'

"The Shining Suite in the caretaker’s cottage is an exact, to-the-detail recreation of Kubrick’s Room 237—complete with the unmistakable geometric carpet, midcentury furniture, an oil painting of Stephen King on the wall, a safe that holds a screen-used axe purchased at auction, and a mint-green bathroom with a tub and sheer shower curtains that I found positively chilling; it’s available to stay only one weekend a year via auction (which once fetched $100,000 for charity), though the hotel’s daily Shining tour lets visitors see it and other cinematic artifacts." - Julie Tremaine Julie Tremaine Julie Tremaine is a writer who’s passionate about travel, food, wellness, and road trips. I've been here for a year and a half and they helped me with my rent when I was behind and in many other ways. The staff is way cool and they're always ready to help me and my roommate when we need it. After being in other assisted living places this place is a Godsend. Brian M.

After a grueling experience at a facility in Fullerton, we were fortunate enough to find The Cottage. From the beginning this facility was welcoming and full of energy. I toured many facilities and it was clear to me that this place was different. The staff is friendly and always busy but never too busy to help a resident or visitor. The administration has been flexible and compassionate regardless of the issues that have come up with my mom's move. The med techs are so attentive and approachable. They build relationships with the residents and differentiate their care according to their needs. In addition, they seem to go beyond the needs of the residents. They welcome families and visitors and make us feel like we are a part of one big family. This facility might not seem as fancy as other places at first sight but believe me, it's a treasure.

My grandfather was at the Cottage At Artesia Gardens for 10 months. I am so thankful to all of the staff for the care they provided him the last few months of his life. The staff cared for him as if he was their own and assisted him in living out his life with love and dignity. My family is forever grateful, thank you from the bottom of our hearts….. It was several years ago, but if it's still the same crew, they were awesome! They did a phenomenal job. I'd definitely hire them again!! Say hi to Juanita for me!

They don't treat the resident nice. This place needs new employees, employees who care! I only met 2 to 3 employees who were always nice to my parents.

Yelp
The Cottages have been my mother's home for several years now. She is receiving exceptional care. She is happy and content. Staff keeps me informed. They are so kind to her. Her dementia has been difficult to deal with but the Cottages have been a blessing. I highly recommend this facility for anyone who is looking for a safe, clean and professional care facility.

Yelp
My father-in-law's resident at the Cottage at Artesia over a year now and we are super happy with them. Best place for your love one with dementia, Alzheimer who walk around , moving around a lot. The staffs are really really good with patients. This place is a gem with reasonable price.

Yelp
My Aunt Dolores was given the most wonderful care at the Cottages at Artesia in Buena Park. The staff is mature and caring and know exactly how to work with adults suffering with dementia and memory loss. The facility was also immaculately clean. The grounds were beautiful and we often sat in the gazebo area admiring the flower garden. My aunt was a resident at the Cottages for a little over a year and she passed peacefully at 91 years of age.

Yelp
First, if you are looking for a place to put your loved one, I am so sorry...this disease is awful. My hero, my dad, is here. As awful as the journey with this disease is and as traumatic as it is to place a loved one in a home, this place is a gem. My dad has been there for over a year and my whole family is very happy with it. The first place we put him could not handle him, and we found this one by the grace of God. The staff is very knowledgeable, caring, and attentive. It is clean, smells good (I have been to many that do not) and they are great with the patients. They take my dad to all his appointments, monitor him, monitor his medication, and care for him. We can visit whenever we want, we are welcomed when we visit. They explain things and are very well versed in treating Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Although my dad is in the pretty advanced stages of Alzheimer's now, he is always dressed, clean, and cared for. The owner is outstanding, the staff is great, and as far as this kind of thing goes, the price is reasonable. They are good to him, the respect his dignity, and my mom can rest easy now knowing he is in good hands and well cared for. You may also want to give the 36 hour Day, by Nancy Mace and Peter Rabins a read. You will likely cry your way through it like I did, but at least you will have an idea what is happening and what is coming. I highly recommend the Cottage and I wish you luck in your journey with this.

Yelp
Artesia Gardens was my mother's home away from home for the last 22 months (12/31/1999 - 10/30/2001) of her life as we struggled through her battle with Alzheimer's. The owners were always approachable. The administrator, Bonnie was warm and friendly; she always kept me up to date on every aspect of my mother's care, phoning me whenever there was a concern. The daily hands-on staff were very caring. I highly recommend Artesia Gardens to anyone considering a locked facility (necessary for Alzheimer's individuals as they tend to wander) for a loved one.

Yelp
I hate to read Long reviews so I'll make this simple and quick. My father "Tarara" Has been at this facility for close to five years. He had previously been in and out of Two other facilities including Brookdale in Yorba Linda and St Elizabeth's in Fullerton now named something else for obvious reasons! I can tell you that this place is way better, let me tell you why. I transport my father at least once a week to his appointments so I'm there more than most Sons/Daughter and I see the care they provide for their patients. He is always shaved, combed, clean and smelling good. I can NOT remember a time when that was not the case. The workers are especially nice, caring and PATIENT. I have the nurse on duty's cellphone number so whatever I need I just call them...I love that. If you have any questions or need a reference please feel free to email me. I hope you add this place to your list of Facilities to look at, you won't be disappointed. Thanks for reading.
