"How did it strike you on arrival? The Old Magistrates Court is an imposing, sturdy sort of building—you can imagine it being a reassuring place to put notorious gangsters like the Kray twins, who were locked away here in the 1960s. Recently opened in 2016, the hotel is elegant inside, with lots of lovely original features—the entrance opens onto a sweeping grand staircase, terrazzo floor, and original stained-glass windows. The bar is in what used to be the courtroom and has parquet floor and rather odd art, such as paintings of the Mona Lisa and Darth Vader behind bars. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Business travellers—you’re steps from the City banks—as well as those that want to be in the thick of things but don’t want to pay premium prices or rest in a bland chain hotel. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The rooms are spacious but a touch generic—they look cheaper than the price tag suggests, with patterned carpet and shiny scatter cushions. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Bathrooms are roomy, with greige tiles and walk-in showers. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The extras are what makes this place—a lovely rooftop bar, bowling alley, screening room, and spa with a 33-foot long Jacuzzi. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?A cocktail in what used to be the cell that once held the Kray twins. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The location and building are impressive but the decor is a little bit basic" - Laura Goulden

This hotel, acclaimed for its five-star status and amenities such as bowling, a pool, a sauna, a steam room, a spa (massage), a restaurant, and a sky view terrace, was profoundly disappointing. For a three-night stay at £350 per night, one would expect excellence. The pool, sauna, and steam room were freely accessible without appointments. However, the spa services demanded a fee of £45, contingent upon the availability of a masseuse. Bowling, too, came at a cost of £45 per hour. The scanty toiletries, including diminutive bottles of shampoo and body wash, and the absence of washcloths, rendered bathing unsatisfactory. The hotel felt eerily empty, with scarcely any guests. While the breakfast was a typical English affair, the dinner menu was woefully bland; the steak, burger, and fries all lacked flavor, and the cocktails were merely alcoholic, lacking any true taste. For the considerable sum of £350 per night, I must convey my extreme disappointment with this establishment.

How this hotel is five stars is beyond me. The first room had paint flaking from two surfaces, a dirty carpet and marks on the pillows. We complained to the management and they upgraded our room to a larger one. This was nicer but had a TV that wouldn’t change channels and curtains that don’t fit the windows. The breakfast was average at best. On the positive side the staff were nice and the location is good if you like being in a busy bar and cafe area.|It’s three star at best

Please avoid. Terrible experience at Courthouse Hotel, not sure how it is possible they have 5*. To begin with there is no one at the hotel’s entrance, the staff at the reception is not welcoming and to top it all off I found my towels stained. Other than that the room was ok but will definitely avoid spending any nights there in the future

Convenient location with an impressive exterior and entrance, on first arrival this hotel looked promising. The first room we had was small, basic with dirty carpets and worn and scuffed furnishings. Dirty linen on the bed was an added bonus and when we raised it with hotel staff they immediately changed the room. The second room was a lot more spacious, fittings were in better condition, although the cheap table had the same wearing as in the other room and the carpets were still grubby. The bathroom was lovely, clean and modern although lacked the kind of details you would expect from 5 star. No vanity kit, only a face soap and no hand soap, face tissues, face cloths, cotton wool, shower cap or any of the usual things you would expect to find. The large bed was comfy but the TV only had one channel with no option to stream to any services - most 5 star nowadays allow you to connect to your own Netflix/Amazon account or screen cast from your own device. The best were the blackout curtains that didn’t fit the windows. Breakfast room was clean and modern, but food the food was poor and coffee undrinkable. On the plus side the staff were amenable and pleasant and the location was great. Overall, the hotel was on par with a good premier inn - clean, apart from the carpets, but basic and nowhere near a 5 star as it claims to be.

I’ve had to stay in this hotel for business over the last year and the staff have been reliably rude and unwelcoming every time. I can only assume they want to make people feel like they’re going to prison. The only place I felt safe was the restaurant at breakfast - their staff are lovely and very helpful. I will never stay here again and would warn any lone female traveller from staying here.

First stay at this hotel. Great old building but modern rooms. Very comfortable bed/room (great pillows!) modern bathrooms and great shower. Despite busy road, it was very quiet. Close to Shoreditch main areas.

The room is very dark but quite spacious. I want to complain about the services. We didn't have any breakfast, and we don't even know where it is served. However, the reception wanted to charged me for breakfast. When I challenged this, he said he would check with his colleague. Until the next day, there was still no conclusion. Luckily, he didn't overcharge me in the end. Despite this, it was still a bad experience, and I had to spend time arguing about their mistakes.

Excellent stay for 4 nights. My Colt business trip. Large cosy, comfortable & clean rooms. Very good breakfast & food. Reception & support staff was highly helpful. Special mention for all the support from Ms.Eugenia Davies at reception.
