This hotel leaves a lot to be desired. We are not super picky hotel people. I don't care if the decor is outdated or the rooms are small, as long as things are clean and safe, that's good for me, just wanted to preface this review with that.
We'll start with the good. The rooms and beds were comfortable and clean. There is a lot around the hotel within walking distance, which is great. The Luau that is on/near the property is great and can be easily booked through the Marriott app.
Now the not so great:
At check-in there was only one person at the counter. Which made no sense because it was 4pm, which is the designated check-in time, so you would think they would've planned ahead
We checked in online, but still had to go inside (as per the instructions in the app). The line was long and very slow. When we asked about a cart for bringing in our luggage, we were told that they only have carts for bell hops and if we wanted a cart we could use the bellman service. That's fine, except they once again, only had 1 person who was providing that service and they were nowhere to be found, so we ended up having to drag all of our luggage up ourselves and without a cart. When we asked for directions to our room from the concierge desk, they told us the completely wrong way to go. When we got to the room, we needed a few more pillows. We used the app (again, as instructed at check in if we needed anything to do it that way). We waited about 2 hours, no pillows, so we called housekeeping, they acknowledged they got our request and would come up soon. We waited another 2 hours and had to call 2 more times to get them delivered.
We booked an ocean view room, however their definition of that is very loose. If we walked directly on the balcony, we were facing the other building and overlooking the roof of the lobby area, if we leaned out and turned, we could see a portion of the beach and water. It felt very much like a bait and switch.
Finally, the real reason we were unhappy was the lack of security and safety. When we checked in, they made sure to tell us that we had to have our key cards to use all amenities. That makes sense because the hotel walks out to a very public beach area. That public beach area has several homeless folks that sleep on the pier or around the trees at the edge of the property. As we walked around, we noticed that the pool gates, which are supposed to locked and keyed into, and are right by the beach, we're propped open the entire stay. Additionally, the elevators did NOT require a key card and the back entrance from the parking lot, up to the elevator (which goes to all the floors and rooms) had a key swiper, but was never locked, even when we returned to the hotel one night at midnight, the backdoor was unlocked. This made us feel very uncomfortable. I have teenage daughters who I would have liked to let go to the pool or down to the lobby to buy a snack alone, but the lack of security here made that entirely out of the question.
We've traveled and stayed at Marriott's all over the world and this was, by far the most underwhelming, unfriendly, and disappointing Marriott property we've ever stayed at.
